Because of a desk lamp, my roommate could see the reflection off his ear studs in a glossy screen.

If you have a light source shining on you, you will see yourself. (reflections dont necessarily come from light sources behind you) This is especially noticable when watching movies, or having dark backgrounds with a desk lamp on.

for this reason, i went matte.

oooohhhh, it's shiny and glossy! i want that one instead of the plain looking matte screen. the glossy screen looks coooooooooler.

matte pwnz. kbye.

Matte is good despite the rice.

I also prefer the matte despite the grain. On the glossy, there are two things going on: the surface gloss and the underlying grain. On the matte, it's just grain all the way...

I also find matte to be easier on the eyes. You might think that the reflections aren't there, but they often are and you're just used to it. That is tiring for your eyes - at least for my eyes. I say go with matte.

It is definitely personal preference but I like the matte screen a lot better. I saw the glossy displays in store and they look nice but for everyday computing I prefer matte.

My old Vaio had a glossy screen, and I liked it so I got the glossy on my MBP as well. I actually didn't make my own choice, as I bought an open box one from the store, and it just turned out to be glossy. I wouldn't have minded if I got a matte one, but I prefer the glossy.

could some1 post a pic of a matte. and a pic of a glossy screen

Heck - i'll bite. Here is a shot of a Glossy 17" taken with no flash at the Florida Mall Apple Store last week. I actually needed to have a picture of the interface in Aperture that it is showing.

This screen wasn't as badly backlit as it looks either, but it wasn't what i'd call "great" either. Notice the lovely lights???

that said, you need to try to see them in person.....

Glossy. I got a Matte initially but found the screen issues to be prevalent or exaggerated on the matte screen whilst the glossy screen is much easier on my eyes but by no means perfect.

i went for matte, it just seemed to look nicer in the flesh...err aluminium! also, is it just me or do mbp's look more professional with matte screens, i'm probably being stupid but my friend at uni has the same mbp as mine but with a colour screen and despite being marginally brighter and excellent for watching movies on, it seems to look cheaper?

Thank you so much for your responses.

I went to the store, expecting myself to get a Glossy 17" MBP unless something POPS up that made me change my mind. One main reason is that my Boyfriend's HP glossy screen loooks GREAT and I really want to feel the "WOW" when I first turn on the MBP. (And I was thinking that a matted screen MBP wouldn't look like a new computer when placed next to a glossy screen one).

Unexpectedly, I ended up getting a matted screen. I doubted, compared, and struggled in the store for a while for this decision. I wasn't even sure if I made the right decision the minute I was paying for it. Reasons that made me chose the matted screen:

1) I do some basic photo editing for fun only, but I don't want my own screen to lie to my eyes. I want the edited photos look good to everyone else, not just to me in front of my own mac. (I'm not likely to get an external monitor anytime soon since what I'm getting is a 17" MBP)

2) I think the glossy screen is great for "show-offs" in front of friends, but since I won't be bringing my MBP with me MOST of the time, I think matted screen will be better for my own use. (The wow effect will fade away as time pass anyways)

3) If I get the glossy screen and If I'd ever be a pro in photoshop later, I think it'd take me a while to get used to the matted one again.

Right now I'm typing this post on my new MBP. Although I'm still exploring around as I've always been a PC user, and I'm LOVING my beautiful MBP. I compared my matted MBP and my bf's HP glossy screens on my desk with different lighting and his laptop is NOT noticibily brighter than mine. And if I put a lamp right in front of the glossy screen, it acts like a mirror and I could see the lamp and light bulb VERY CLEAR.

I'm so glad that I bought the matted screen. :) :) :)

Thanks to you all! :)

I've been playing with my MBP for HOURS last night and I finally got the hang of it. I realize that MAC is MORE user friendly than Windows. Although I'd need just a little time to get used to where different things are placed
, the way MAC lays out everything is very ummm......(how should I describe it?!)...... SIMPLE and CLEAR.

My ONLY problem so far is getting the Chinese Input the way it was on PCs. Somehow the Jianyi (Traditional Chinese input) lays out differently and so it seems like I'd need a lot of time getting use to it   :. I hope that I can download the one I used to use somewhere. Other than that minor problem, I cannot be more happy with my switch! :) :) :)

I'm going to install Parallels Desktop for Mac soon and I hope that everything will smooth.

Do you mind telling me your main usage of computer please? Do you do anything like photo editing/graphic designing?

I personally prefer the glossy one too, but the glare/reflection is what's holding me back.

I do some photo editing, but mainly audio production work. My laptop sits in front of a window, and while there is sometimes glare, about 95% of the time I see no glare. What pissed me off most about matte was its total lack of contrast in the sun. Out in the sun you see a lot of reflections on a glossy screen, but you can at least read your screen =). My old matte PB was horrible in the sun -- I couldn't even see my mouse, barely read text, etc.

I see you got your matte screen already though. Have fun with it!
