A good option, if you are going to buy stock, get the Best Buy warranty. That covers accidental damage. I bought a 850 dollar HP laptop in 2008. In that time i stepped on it, which broke the screen internally - it got replaced, while they gave me a brand new macbook pro 15 inch to use while i waited. About 4 months ago i dropped it down a flight of stairs (don't ask how) and needless to say it was totalled. Best Buy gave me a 750 dollar gift card to buy a new laptop (or anything in the store for that matter, since I had already bought a macbook pro).

Has anyone here purchased applecare and has nothing happened to their laptop? Making the applecare purchase a waste.

Yep which is why I never got Applecare for as long as I remember. My first laptop is 11 years old(this year), and that stupid thing won't die. I purchased a new laptop 4 years ago and retired it to get something better :p I made an excuse to get a new one. Nothing ever happened to either one.

Just bought a new laptop again just over a year ago and BOOM. This new one has pixel problems which are not fixable. Sure kicking myself I never got Applecare. I now find myself needing to replace the computer...Applecare is WELL worth it for the amount of stuff it covers for 3 years, not to mention if you ever a problem, or something you are stuck on, you can give them a call.

Will never buy an Apple product without applecare again.

Was it worth the investment seeing as they only cover you for three years?
My 2 cents: Both my daughters have MBPs for college. One just graduated. Hers had trouble right from the start. In the 2nd year, Apple replaced it with a new MBP because of all the problems. She's had no trouble with that one and it's still going strong. There wouldn't have been a replacement with no AppleCare, and many of the fixes prior to that would have been out of pocket. My younger daughter hasn't had a single problem with hers in 2+ years. Bottom line: It's a crapshoot whether or not you'll need it, but I've recently purchased two Apples for myself on the education discount (refurbed iMac and new 13" base MBP), and with each one I bought AppleCare. I'd rather not take the chance!

It will NEVER be a waste. If you don't have it when you need it, then you're in big trouble!
So, would you rather kick yourself in the ass for not having it, or do a big "Phew!" when you wind up needing it?

I look at AppleCare like I do any other insurance. You hope you don't need it, but you sure are glad to have it when you do. Especially with laptops.

Not getting AppleCare is like russian roulette, and just like renters' insurance. You may never need it, but when you do, you will be glad you paid the extra for it. With the student discount, it is like $10 a month (24 months @ $240).

I have utilized my AC a few times. I got a new keyboard out of it so far. My screen is acting up (they replaced the LB right after i got the computer)..

My MBP is also covered under my renters' insurance, which i haven't had to utilize (fingers crossed).

Also when you go to sell your MBP (if you do) within the AC coverage period, you can get a bit more for your computer

I just bought my MBP, and I don't have apple care, but I plan to get it before the first year of free coverage ends. I think it's a worthwhile investment.

Actually its sorta kinda like russian roulette if you do get it, because after you win a certian number of rounds (repairs) then you win a prize (petition for a replacement) .

I ain't no gamblin' man but I reckon one more repair in the next year (5 so far) and i'm complaining LOUDLY

1. AppleCare is a bundle of insurance and services.
2. Apple likely sells Applecare to make money.
3. Most buyers do not come out ahead in the transaction.
4. A few buyers come out ahead monetarily and some buyers may value the additional services.
5. The anecdotal stories in this and similar threads are not really a good basis for making your insurance and service purchase decision.
6. Based on numerous threads here, it appears that purchasing deeply discounted AppleCare through Ebay is risky, particularly when the vendor does not furnish the original box.

I have never understood this -- how can somebody sell AppleCare on Ebay? Wouldn't anybody selling it be selling it at a loss? For example, the seller purchased from Apple the full-price AppleCare, and they'd have to sell it at a loss -- otherwise the buyer would just buy it from Apple itself.

And how does the Ebay buyer even know if the AppleCare is legitimate and not used?
apple care transfers. it covers the computer itself, not the buyer. it is tracked by the serial number. if you are looking to buy off ebay, ask for the serial number and you can check on the apple website if its covered through applecare.

I believe the poster is asking about the retail box itself, and he's right.

I won't buy Applecare. I have NEVER before taken a computer of any kind in to be fixed by someone. My dad's a computer engineer so if I couldn't fix anything, then he always could for me. I don't expect this computer to be much different.

No, you don't get 3 years warranty just for being a student, I bought my new MBP 3 weeks ago and that was definitely not the case.

I just read through the HE t&c's to double check as there is a lot of conflicting information going around.

The Apple One-year limited warranty covers all Apple Hardware except those explicitly mentioned below in clause 10.1.1 which describes specific warranty benefits for purchases made within the framework of the Higher Education National Agreement.

10.1.1 All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products sold after October 1st 2005 within the framework of the HE National Agreement shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period (the “HE National Agreement Warranty”) commencing from the date of delivery.

I can fix them all day long too....still have to buy the parts, and they ain't cheap. One LCD pays for your Applecare.....twice. Has nothing to do with technology skill sets. Labor is only part of the equation.
