About to purchase 2 iphone 4 smartphones myself. Been researching all the insurance options, and let me tell you, none are perfect. I will share what I found...

worthavegroup - Seemed like the best deal hands down. They covered everything for $80 per year, according to their website...

So I emailed them with some basic questions. Glad I did, as their answers made me realize why they were so cheap...

*My questions in bold, their answers in red*

I was looking over your iphone insurance comparison chart, and on it, it says “Repairs void Apple Warranty” and it says N/A. What does that mean? Our policies are actual insurance against physical damage to the phone or having it stolen. We do not physically repair the phone if damaged. We reimburse you the customer for repairs if damaged. If the screen is cracked, you would take it to the local Apple Store for repair and send us the receipt with the claim forms from our website. Worth Ave. Group would then send a CHECK for the repair, minus the $50 deductible, to reimburse you for the repair. If the phone is not repairable, we would pay to replace the phone. Again, that is a check and not a new/refurbished phone. Since we do not physically repair the phone, a policy with Worth Ave. Group does not “void” any Warranties.

If my iphone 4 is stolen or I lose it, you guys replace it for $50, correct? Our policies cover theft, but we DO NOT cover losing the iPhone. We DO NOT send a new/refurbished phone. We reimburse for the replacement of the new phone. If stolen, you are required to file a police report. Along with the police report information, Proof-of-Ownership and Replacement Value is required for the iPhone that was stolen. Proof-of-Ownership means the original receipt or the box the phone came in when purchased. Replacement Value means you purchase the new phone and send a copy of that receipt or provide a statement from the provider with the replacement value.

no matter what the damage, you guys will fix the phone, correct? Our policies cover theft, fire/flood damage, vandalism, natural disasters and accidental drops/spills/liquid submersion. If the damaged is caused by one of these perils, it would be covered. We DO NOT cover mechanical/electrical malfunctions (stops working, won’t charge, won’t turn on), damage due to temperature change (ex: humidity), or just losing the phone. If the phone is damaged, you always have to prove the damage. For cracked screens it needs to be taken to Apple. For liquid damage, you are required to mail the phone to our office with the claim paperwork.

Again, we DO NOT physically repair your phone. We will reimburse the repair or replacement

So, yeah, after reading that, worthavegroup is definitely not the best option.

Safeware
and Squaretrade are pretty much the same way as far as saying they'll replace your phone no matter what, but really they won't if you read between the lines.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Mobileprotect - Covers everything, but is the most expensive hands down. $12 a month, plus $200 to replace your phone.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Best Buy - You have to buy your phone there to even be offered their insurance, so if you already have your iphone and you bought it somewhere else, forget about it. It's $10 a month, and covers everything except theft or lost, with no deductible. Not a bad deal as long as you don't lose your phone one way or another.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Apple Insurance - Hands down the most worthless option. Doesn't cover anything really. If you get water damage? Not Covered. Crack the Screen? Not Covered. Only covers one replacement too.

Hope this helps. If I had to pick right now, I'd probably go with the Best Buy insurance plan, but I haven't bought my phones yet, so I have the option to go through them. Still researching, but to be honest, none of the deals are that good.

Apple's isn't insurance, it's extended warranty and as such covers manufacture issues. Where did you read that it only covers one replacement? I read the Terms and Conditions and can't seem to find that.

I have AppleCare for CAD$79 to cover manufacture issues and then I've added it to my home owner's insurance for $20/year to cover theft, loss and damage.

AppleCare is great for me as the closest Apple store is 6 hours away so if I have an issue, AppleCare waives the $29 Express Replacement fee (which gets you a replacement phone ASAP). Also, my homeowner's insurance has a $0 deductible for the phone.

The combo of these 2 work well for me as most of these insurance plans aren't available in Canada and the couple I found that were didn't offer anything better than I had.

I just sent an email to my insurance provider asking about insurance for my future iphone's.

and you're right, I was wrong about applecare, but is it really worth it?

Of course its insured... Are you kidding me ?? I also insured my shoes and my broom by the same occasion.

just an fyi to peeps.....contact your home/auto insurance company.I have it insured through state farm who also provides me renters/auto insurance. I think I paid like 50 bucks for the year for my iphone 4. If I break it, lose it, etc. Just pay a 100 dollar deductible and they write me a check for the full retail cost of the 32gb model! :)

If I were gonna go the warranty route, I'd pick squaretrade based on everything I've read and all the glowing reviews.

My approach to warranties is this: I turn down all warranties on any electronic device I buy, and put that money instead into a savings account. Eventually, if something does go wrong, I'll just use the money I saved from declining any coverage (which, after several years of doing this, adds up to a hefty amount) to either repair or replace my gadget.

Anybody used Ensquared?

Anybody tried Ensquared? (www.ensquared.com) — $89 for loss/theft/accident. It's just 1 year, and not sure I'd need loss or theft coverage, so leaning toward Squaretrade.

Also, to those thinking renter's/homeowner's: You might be better off picking up a policy like Squaretrade. A claim on your homeowner's will likely raise your rates going forward. Food for thought.

I guess it depends on your specific needs. If something should go wrong with my phone (display dies, battery fails, some other hardware glitch), I can call Apple, they send me out a new phone, it shows up the next day and I package mine up in the box they provided and call UPS to pick it up. And I'm out $0 and don't have to spend any time filing a claim with 3rd party insurance. I also don't have to spend any time investigating whether or not the insurance company is reputable or if the should close shop.

If you're fine with some extra time spent filing, fine with paying money up front and paying a deductible and have an Apple store nearby for quick replacement, then going through a 3rd party may suit you just fine. I'm paying $119 for 2 years of coverage including AppleCare and home insurance coverage and so it's not that much different than what people are paying with 3rd parties and I have a $0 deductible.

ETA: and our phones are unlocked phones so cost $779 + tax. If they had been subsidized phones, I wouldn't be as worried shelling out full price for a replacement stolen/lost phone, but paying that amount twice for one phone? No thanks. :)

I got the Apple Care. I had it for my MacBook Pro and definitely used it.

Applecare is not insurance!

If you don't have applecare, and your phone glitches, what happens? Does apple charge you to fix it?

My insurance guy said there's no way I can cover my iphone 4 under my insurance. Still don't have a decent insurance option...

iPhone comes with 1 year warranty for defects. Zero cost to replace if it's a defect. You can buy another year of apple care while it's still insured.

If you are clumsy, get squaretrade.
