You just have to buy the APP anytime before your 1 year is up.

I'd like to point out that this is true for ANY type of extended warranty.

I recently purchased a car that has a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty. I inquired about purchasing an extended warranty... I can extend the warranty but I must so any time during the normal period of coverage.

Judging from the glitches we've seen arising in just the past three months it's very likely that Apple Care will pay off on the iPhone.
Not when 99% of all consumer electronics "glitches" occur well within the standard manufacturer warranty. If you feel on day 364 that you feel it's best to protect for an additional year at $70, then go for it. Buying it ahead of time is stupid.

Note that I never stated one should buy the extended coverage right away. Surely, make the determination somewhere late in the game after you've had experience with the unit.

I've had extended and optional coverages pay off more than once.

Most people don't even think about buying GAP insurance for their car loan but I insist on it... I've had two cars get totalled in the past five years and GAP insurance kicked in to cover the difference between the fair market value and the residual on the loan.
