I am not insured as of now, but my parents plan to insure both my-and my brother's 13" 2010 MBP's. I think they were going to do something with a $500 deductible. I will have them look into this policy that you put in the first post. IMHO, it would be better to pay $45 a year with no deductible.

Oh, and I know that we have statefarm homeowners insurance.

Yeah a $500 deductible is half the value of the machine :p With that kind of deductible, they are probably just adding it to the normal home owners policy. That is bad because if you make a claim, it will raise your home insurance for years.

I think I paid about $150 AUD for mine to be covered for 2 years, but it is covered for theft, damage, loss and most general stupidity situations.

Only thing it isn't covered for is... Feral animals.

My cats can eat it, pee on it whatever, my friends dogs and cats can do whatever, but if a feral bunny pees on it, I am screwed.

who with? GIO?

I insured my MBP through SquareTrade at time of purchase (about a year ago) for ~$300 for 4 years I believe, with accidental coverage.

Happy I did it too, my friend just spilled water on his MBP and its probably ruined. No insurance.

Not sure if my price increases year after year, but for 4 years I would just end up paying $45*4 = $180. I guess Squaretrade replaces Applecare though? Applecare for 15" MBP off eBay is $135, so I guess I would end up paying about the same if I got both Applecare and Statefarm: total = $315.

I rather go with Applecare + Statefarm since I trust both of them more, and together I think its total better protection package since Applecare service can be done at the Apple store.

EDIT: I just looked at it, Squaretrade 3 year warranty is $199.99 and then if you add accidental damage protection, it is ANOTHER $200. I'm guessing you got a discount somewhere, I know Squaretrade often has 25% discounts going a few times a year. I would still prefer the Applecare + Statefarm.

Might want to be wary of $135 applecares though, they come without boxes and /might/ be dodgy.

Wait a minute so what is the point of Applecare?

If you drop your laptop, Statefarm insurance will give you a check to replace it? What is the process for this? Do you ship it in for them to take a look at?

Also, if you don't have Applecare and your screen goes out ... Can't you just "accidentally" drop it and claim it as an accident?

Cover manufacturing defects (i.e. non-user induced damage)

From what I've gathered, if you damage your laptop you mail it to them (or take it to your local claims office) and they mail you a check for the original value it was insured for. If it is stolen you file a police report and notify your agent. If it is lost you talk nicely to your agent and hope they believe you :p

I've heard turn around times to receive the check can be as short as 3-4 days. Also, any bad experiences I found with a State Farm personal articles policy was related to jewelry and them not honoring appraisal values. Apple sets the prices on laptops and is the sole manufacturer, so that's a non-issue.

Also, if you don't have Applecare and your screen goes out ... Can't you just "accidentally" drop it and claim it as an accident?

That would be committing insurance fraud. The system depends on people being reasonable. Don't be the ass that increases the base rates for the rest of us :p

I just spoke with my State Farm agent...

She said the $0 deductible is only available on things valued $2000 and over. I should've gone with the 15" MBP all decked out then huh?

For my $1200 13" MBP, it costs $25/year for coverage and the deductible is $250. So if anything happens, I'll get $925 back? (1200-250-25)

Can anyone tell me if this is worth it?

Eh? My policy is actually coving a laptop worth $1834 exactly and I have no deductible.

I agree that Statefarm is the better deal, I was just saying the path I choose.

Wow, that sounds like some good coverage! If only it was available in my area.. :(

Is there similar insurance available in massachusetts?

I just looked and state farm apparently doesn't 'market new businesses in mass.' whatever that means..
