Did you "NEED" or "WANT" a MacBook Pro?

All my computer are pure "want" driven; it's a SERIOUS hobby; though an expensive one over the time
I returned iPad2 for 13" MBP
Since my daughter has same model I can keep in touch on Facetime when I move out (divorce). I had to give up iMac so MBP made most sense.

I NEED a laptop, but I WANTED a MBP
I could really almost say I "need" the MBP since I run Final Cut on a regular basis. My wife and I also travel internationally for the work we do. So the durability and stability of a MBP is very important to me. PLUS, I love the flexibility of this machine - I can run win7 right beside OSX with no issues whatsoever.
This machine allows me to be creative using Final Cut, and then I keep our non-profits books using quickbooks on my win7 virtual machine.

I suppose, but a computer isn't a necessity in life. If anything, it's just a luxury.

Nearly all college professors want typed papers and some won't even accept a hard-copy nowadays, they prefer it submitted electronically. I suppose many people could get by by using library computers, but my college only has 2500 of those, while it has 20,000 students. Myself, with as many papers/projects/reports as I get, as well as online courses, it would be really impractical to be in the library 8hrs a day, especially when there's a 90min limit during common hours.
Therefore, as a student:
do I need a computer? - Yes;
did I need to buy a really good and expensive $1000+ computer by likes of Macbook Pro? - No, but I wanted one.
Not if your livelihood and ability to compete hinges on having a computer. Then it's necessary for survival.

I didn't need my 15" MBP, I wanted it. Only had it a couple weeks. My 4+ yr old Acer died a few months ago. I've got a pretty nice work laptop that I can do almost anything I want with but there is some stuff I'd rather the company not see. (IDK what they track regarding browsing history but it's better to not test it)
For what I'll probably do with my MBP I could have probably gotten by with a $400 craptop. The MBP is just cool though so I went for it. 🙂
My old Dell died two days before I started grad school, so I definitely NEEDED a new computer. I had problems with PCs for years (viruses, hardware malfunctions) and I had grown tired of the tedium of fixing them or having them fixed.
In that sense, I simply WANTED an Apple computer. I won't list all the features and such that I liked, but I got the 15" because I wanted something I could take to school, but a large enough display to act kind of like a desktop.

I bought my MBP in 2007, three days before the 2007 models came out (yes, I know 🙄)
I had had a Mac Mini for about a year after switching from Windows, and I was tremendously happy with it. I wanted something a bit more portable though. I was all ready to buy a new high-end white MacBook, but decided I'd rather have a larger, non-glossy display. So I bought a year-old MBP used on CL. Could I have gotten by with the MacBook, sure. But for just $100 more, I got a machine that I'm a bit happier with.

The results of this poll reveal what Apple already knows. People usually by Apple MBP's because of their supremely effective marketing. Apple has the best marketing of any company in my opinion. They've created a near cult like base of followers, and positioned their products as "cool". I've never witnessed any other company be as effective at hyping products as Apple.
The fact that many don't really need a MBP, is the reason Apple sells so many iPads. The average Apple buyer doesn't need a full laptop computer. It's a total waste of money. iPads can do what they "need" which is to play. Play games, play around on the net, do some mundane tasks with Pages, etc.
It's a brilliant strategy on Apples part. One look at the sales volume tells the entire story.

I am a Computer Science major, I never had my own computer. I really needed one for my major. I fix windows computers, I wanted something that would last me a real long time and would not give me problems.
It was expensive, but it has been exceptional and phenomenal. after 2 and a half years with my pro.
I needed it more than wanted it, I hated apple, but I got one based on a sole recommendation from a friend. totally changed everything around, thank you apple

I made the leap from many years with a PC just two months ago and I asked myself the same question. Do I really need to shell out $1800 plus another couple hundred for software or do I just want a slightly better (and much cooler) laptop?
I may not have "needed" it when I made the decision, but after experiencing the MacBook Pro, I definitely NEED it now. It is that much better. Worth every cent.

In 2011, it is fair to say that everyone needs a computer of some sort. Most of us though, don't need one particular model over another. Sure, some work in media or some other specific field and truly require one OS over another, but that's not the case for the average user.
That said, unless we're buying the cheapest thing out there--simply to meet a basic need--the vast majority of us are buying based on want.
In my opinion, any variation of Mac provides a superior experience. With the exception of gaming, there is nothing that a Windows PC does unquestionably better, that's all based on opinion.
In short, we all bought because we needed a computer, and maybe needed a portable one. But we chose the model we chose because it was our preference as consumers.
That said, unless we're buying the cheapest thing out there--simply to meet a basic need--the vast majority of us are buying based on want.

For what I do, it was a need. I produce and perform electronic music, so having a computer than can run Logic Pro and MainStage without a hitch as well as being portable was a must.

I need a laptop because I am an online graduate student. I wanted a MBP because it is a good machine. I wanted a MBP 4 years ago when I bought my last laptop and decided not to buy one because I could get the same specs for cheaper, but over the past 4 years I have found that you get what you pay for, both with the computer hardware and with the OS!
I wanted a MBP (over a white MacBook or MBA) because I wanted an optical drive just in case, long battery life (starting college), dedicated graphics (future proofing), full out quad-core (future proofing), and a bigger screen since I find the 13" too small to use for how long I'm on a computer all day. Plus, 15-inch isn't bad for portability since the thinness helps to cut down on how much I think I'm carrying with me. As for Windows, I'd rather not need activation, blue screens(my friend keeps getting them constantly), and I want the hardware (both component wise and aesthetics) that Apple puts into the MBP line.

For me it was NEED as I didn't have any room to setup my iMac once I had moved into my new place.
Yes, I could have bought a Windows laptop, but I knew I would have regretted it if I left the Mac OS X operating system, so the next best thing that was avaliable was the MacBook Pro.
