I bought a 3rd party insurance for the first time. I've bought AC in the past, and I've skipped it in the past. Funny thing is I've never used AC in my life. I probably buy it 50% of time on Apple products, so it's all been money flushed down the toilet. But, I don't regret it for some peace of mind, and I don't discourage others. It depends on your usage. I use my phones naked, and I've never had a cracked screen.

TL;DR, I have provided no useful anecdotal statistics or advice on what anyone should do.

I didn’t.

Nope. Never do, never will on any product. With the money saved by never buying extended warranties I can probably pay cash for a few iPhone X's at this point. Complete waste of money and 99% profit for any company. Why do you think most places and salesmen push them so hard. Outside of non commissioned places like Apple, sales people make more money off the warranties than the product itself if working on commision.

I feel the same way.

Yes, for the first time. Went into Apple store on 11/4 not really planning on getting phone that day, but they had what I wanted, so I got it and used the Apple payment plan, so adding AC wasn't a big difference. Didn't want to get stuck making payments on a broken phone.

AppleCare + doesn't do much for a display replacement but halves the repair cost for other damage.

I’ve always hated insurance of any kind, felt I could save enough to pay outright. But I did buy it for the X. I had also first time bought it for my MBP and when it fried the motherboard I’m glad I did. Our area only has a small Apple certified seller, so getting better, quicker phone support and better service from the store (they pack for shipping and I don’t have to) is worth it.

I've never purchased AppleCare + for any iPhones (started with the 3G). I've only purchased it for my Apple Watch, but didn't need it and the two years are up.

My iPhone 6 has lasted 2.5 years with just a slim case and a screen protector (although the screen protector did get cracked/replaced after a drop in a driveway. I will use a case and screen protector on the iPhone X as well. I figure the most likely need for AppleCare + is to replace a broken display, but here are the costs compared to AppleCare + and without:

Cost of replacing screen under AppleCare + = $228 ($199 for AppleCare+ and $29 fee to repair a display under coverage)
Cost of replacing screen without AppleCare+= $279

By skipping Applecare + I save $199 if things go well, and pay an extra $51 if things don't go so well and I crack the display. If things really don't go well, I could be out much more if I end up having to pay $549.

I guess it depends on how risk averse you are, and whether or not the extra cost bothers you. I'm planning on the getting the 256 GB model. Between tax, AppleCare+, and a case+screen protector I'm in for over $1,500! On one hand that makes AppleCare+ an even better bargain IF I ever need to use it for more than a screen replacement. On the other hand that means spending $1,500... on a smartphone. 😵 I guess once you cross the mental barrier of $1,000 though...

I suppose one advantage to getting AppleCare + is that I would be much more willing to go without a screen protector. I've never liked the idea of a screen protector, even though the ones I have used have been fine. Still, there is something about putting a $10 piece of glass over an expensive display that bugs me the same way putting a cheap UV filter over a $1,000 camera lens would.

Before writing this I was firmly in the "not paying for AppleCare +" camp. Now I'm not so sure.

No chance, Apple priced it right out of the market here in the U.K. @ £199 plus the excess for any damage is ridiculous.

My packaged bank account with Nationwide covers me for 4 counts of damage at only £50 excess for each use.

No brainier

Yes. To paraphrase from another post, if I need a failed phone replaced during year two, I'd rather pay more now and deal with Apple than with my credit card's benefit administrator.

I found this MacRumors article informative back when I was daydreaming about buying the X. Comments on front page articles are often a different flavor, however.

When you put it like this, really shows what a poor value and rip off AppleCare is.

$199 out of pocket up front guaranteed. For a *chance* to save $250 down the line. Holy **** is that a terrible lottery.

You walk into a gas station selling $199 lottery tickets, and the potential jackpot is $250... do you buy in? Lmao.
