AppleCare+ for the iPhone X costs 20% of the purchase price of the phone. Which suggests Apple loses money if more than one person in five seriously damages their phone.

It sounds to me like AC+ is a licence to print money.

Minor damage, yeah. I remember dropping my old iPhone 5c and the plastic got dinged up - I was extremely bummed out. I loved that iPhone it was (and continues to be), one of my favorite iPhones of all time.

Cracked the screen several times on my 3G (that also has both buttons not working, at this moment, along with the accelerometer not detecting the position), the digitizer also stopped working on its own on my 3GS. Very easy to replace the glass on those models. Never had issues with my 4S.

I dropped my iPhone 5 face-first onto my bathroom floor. It gave an ominous crunch sound and the screen was practically chipped right down to the internals. 🙁

Since 2009 I have only cracked one iPhone's screen. I've never bought AppleCare on all my Apple devices. The money I saved on AppleCare is more than enough for a new iPhone.

I can honestly say that I have never damaged an iPhone or smart phone since owning one. However, I hope my luck doesn't change after posting this.

I think Apple increased the cost of AC+ because of how badly it will fair in a drop to a hard surface. There are also people who with "game" or cheat the system and all of these things increase costs to the consumer.

I am extremely careful with my iPhone's, Never dropped never cracked.
I am too, but stuff happens, for me it was tripping over a raised piece of the concrete on the sidewalk. It was reflex that that brought my hands down to break my fall, which meant letting go of my phone. it wasn't a conscience decision, it just happened.

No matter how careful people can be, accidents do happen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I cracked my 4 when I slipped, and fell, in an icy parking lot. It was in a case and in my jacket pocket, but the way I landed meant the phone basically ended up between me and the hard ice/concrete. Better the phone break than me, though!

Sometimes people on these type of questions can get a little sanctimonious (not necessarily saying that had happened so far in this thread). I am careful as well with my things, but stuff happens even when people are careful. It is not always entirely in your control.

Completely agree with you. I banged my SUV in a pole right now 😡 Accidents happen no matter how careful you are.

Luckily no. I've dropped phones face down on concrete a couple of times but aside from getting the case a little scuffed there was no damage. The only device I get Apple care for is the MacBook Pro.

Dropped my 5 on it’s launch day when I was taking out the dog. Shattered the screen to pieces. Took it to Apple that same evening and they replaced it even though they said everything was sold out. I didnt have Apple care at the time. Ever since, I’ve had Apple care on all my phones. Used it for the 6 but never had to use it for the 7.

I’ve always purchased AppleCare for the protection against hardware defects during after warranty ownership. I’ve never damaged an iPhone, but my 3GS and my 4S were both replaced in year two for hardware problems, so I’ve continued to buy it. Yes, my credit card could extend the warranty but I’d be without a phone while the claim was being processed. With AppleCare I go home from the genius bar appointment with a working iPhone.

Cracked the screen on my 6S just two months before getting my X. Cracked the front and back on my 4 twice. My 3G and 5 didn't suffer any damage. Never had AC though, always got it replaced through third party repair.

Never seriously damaged any of my phones, been using them for about 13 years. Dropped my 5s down the stairs with a case on, only minor dings and scratches. Dropped my 6s with case on a couple of times, minor scratches as well. Would’ve bought AC if it weren’t so expensive.

I've owned every iPhone since the 3GS (9 iPhones over 8 years) and have never damaged any of them. To me, AppleCare is a waste of money. I'm careful with my things and don't need to pay the "stupid tax" so I can have insurance to be careless with my expensive electronics.

iPhone 4S had two noticeable scratches on the screen I think, the rest hairline scratches. iPhone 6+ had cracked front glass. None of it actually cracked across the screen, but it did crack across the front camera, making all selfies have weird lighting glares. It had some scratches and dents too. My 7 only had a small scratch on the side of the phone.

No, I always case it-----
LOL at that statement!

So…putting your device in a case means there will not ever be any damage? Or are you just saying that all the times there COULD have been damage the case you had your device in prevented it?

Never, ever, not one of my many phones (smart or otherwise) over the years, yet day 13 of having my X. 🙁

Obviously, glad I had AC+ for that repair. My Visa card is paying the deductible that AC+ charges for the claim (under their 90 days accidental/theft/loss coverage).

Almost all of my iPhones have died because of my terrible treatment. And, yes, I use cases. My 6s I dropped face down outside, and there must have been a pebble on the sidewalk or something. That’s the second time I’ve damaged a phone that way.

When my daughter was a few weeks old, and I was very sleep deprived, I ruined two iPhones within a week. The first one, I think I had it in the diaper bag, and one of her bottles leaked and ruined it. I went and got a replacement, and I think I had to pay some fee... like 100 or 200 dollars for them to give me a replacement. Then two days later, I had my phone in my back pocket, and when I was pulling my pants down it fell into the toilet. They gave me a new phone for free after that one. I was in there with my tiny crying baby, and I think the guy felt sorry for me.
