I went from a 1 to a 2 on the two launch day.

I still have the 2 - works fine. My parents still use the 1 on a daily basis - hasn't missed a beat. The first gen iPads were built like tanks.

The iPad 1 would be a lot more useable if it had more RAM. The A4 is fine for all but gaming and a few production apps but it's the 256mb of RAM that's the killer. I imagine iPad 2 users will get the most usage out of their device.

One vote for "No".

Bought an iPad 1 for my wife on her birthday (the iPad had just come out). Bought her an Macbook Air that Christmas. She uses the Air and rarely the iPad.

It has not been upgraded. May consider again when the Air wears out since the iPads have improved greatly since then, however she finds the Air more convenient and easy to use.

Bought an ipad 1 wifi. Blah

Sold and bought ipad 1 3G. Much better.

But the form factor and weight just didn't work out. Plus the resolution wasn't really doing it for me.

Sold.

Then I tried the ipad 3 back in October. But even retina wasn't enough to overcome the physical. Returned it.

So I held out for the mini and it was finally announced. Then I waited for the cellular version.

Nirvana.

iPad 1 > iPad 2 > iPad 3...likely skipping until iPad 6, or jumping ship to a Windows 8 (not RT) touch tablet.

Bought iPad 1 (16GB) off eBay for test drive to see if I like it or not for 6 months. I like it very much so I upgraded to iPad 2 (32GB). I did not like iPad 3 because of little heavy. When iPad 5 comes out this year then I will buy it for sure. :apple:

iPad 1 from launch day, sold to a colleague once I got the iPad 2 12 month later. iPad 3 last March and handed over my iPad 2 to my kid (with heavy parental control).
Skipped iPad 4 (outside my 12month cycle).
Looking forward to iPad 5 in ... March 2013

From ipad 1 to ipad 2 only after ipad 3 came out. Then ipad 3 after ipad 4 came out. much more affordable waiting until the next gen comes out and buying the generation before it.

got a ipad 1 32gig cellular 7 months after they came out and used it till now and got a 32gig ipad 4 wifi just last month and am passing down the ipad 1 to a family member.

I got a 1 upon release and wasn't really a big user of it but now have just bought myself the Mini and use it completely different to the 1, I am now a heavy user due to it being more accessible and portable, it goes everywhere with me, the poor gf has my 1 now.
Such a vast difference, obviously with being such a leap between 1 and Mini, the non retina doesn't bother me at all, the screen is sweeeet.

Also got iPhone 5 on release date after having the 4 so that upgrade is on a 2yr cycle.

I finally made the upgrade from my iPad 1 to the iPad Mini. Spec-wise it's not much of a jump but I'm using it a lot more now since its very light and portable.

I use it while tethering from my iPhone 5 and/or Galaxy Nexus. It's the complete mobile experience for me. My MBP is rarely with me nowadays when unless I need to do video/photo editing.

Cool . Definitely a lot of two year upgrade cycles. I'm still wondering if that is sustainable though. I few people are very happy with mini. And assuming that retina mini is available by 2014 with a more powerful processor and the same battery life and weight; what will be the upgrade path from that item? But for now, the tablets are improving so significantly and so fast, that very few people are skipping two generations. And almost no one has skipped three generations and is still holding onto only the iPad 1.

Certainly we are in a growth phase of this product line unlike with PCs. That is why I can easily see Apple doubling its tablet sales every couple of year for the next four or six years. The products are just going to get more and more compelling. And the fundamentals of a portable lightweight screen with computer and internet access is probably broadly compelling to just about everyone.

I bought a used iPad 1 back in 2011 while the iPad 2 was out :p So I guess I'm one of the few people that have skipped two generations as well (skipped iPad 2, iPad 3 and bought the 4). :p

Typing this on my launch day iPad 1. Still does what I need it to do. I bought an iPad Mini on launch day, too, and now I carry that with me everyday. But at home, I still reach for the full size screen for browsing and movies and stuff. Having never has retina, I don't miss it.

Not sure what I will do when the 1 no longer works--I think I would be more likely to go with a mini upgrade than a full size upgrade. (I have a MBA, too)

I went from iPad 1 to iPad 4. Very happy.

Along the way I bought both a 3 and a mini as soon as they were released, but returned both within a week. I didn't feel the 3 offered enough advantage over the 1 to justify the cost (I mostly just surf and read news online - so the 1 was fine for that). The mini I really wanted to keep, but I had doubts about the longevity of the platform - so I swapped it for a 4. I expect it to last 2-3 years.

My old 64 GB iPad 1 now sits permanently in a dock with some good speakers as a dedicated music-playing jukebox. It works well.

Bought an iPad 1 16 gig a few months after launch and just recently sold it and purchased an iPad Mini 32 gig. Perfect for my needs and a much needed upgrade too.

Still have the iPad 1, still using my iPad 2

I won an iPad 1 32gb wifi a month or so before the 2 came out - was very happy with it.

I was then given an iPad 2 64gb wifi at work a year later and was allowed to keep it.

My wife and kids use the iPad 1 regularly and to be honest, it's more than good enough. It's still performing like new and will (I hope) continue to do so for quite some time.

My iPad 2 gets used mainly for browsing and watching movies, with a fe games thrown in, but again - I have no desire to upgrade, unless i end up getting a mini, simply for the added portability aspect.

If I did that, I'd sell the iPad 1, give the 2 to the family and use the mini myself.

I'd still have my iPad 1 if it wouldn't have died. At the point the 3 was the latest so I got that. Next is a Nexus 7 (if this one dies that is).

That is only based on codec support mind you. I am using my tablet mainly for watching movies on long commutes and downloading / FTPing movies, in almost any format, straight to device beats hrs of mp4 conversions followed by slow USB or wireless transfers.

Glad I gave somebody a laugh!

I'll be here all week. Tell your friends :)

Your reasoning just makes no sense. The Mini was just released and you doubt it lasts 2-3 years like you predict the 4 will ? At this speed you'd be at iPad 9 in 3 years one way or another. The original iPad would still be fine by then mind you.

I bought iPad1 on release date. In fact i bought three and sold the other 2 in England before it was released there and thereby covering the cost of my ipad1. My wife and i still use the ipad regularly in bed for surfing and movie watching. and its holding up really well. Now our 15 month old likes to play doodle on it. We have not purchased any subsequent ipad release. i think part of this i feel like i am being spoiled if i jump at each new offering but also i realised ipad use is limited by its size and operating system. I am interested in new surface pro coming out or a 2nd generation i-pad mini which could be more useful given its portability.

I bought an iPad 1 about a month after release. I haven't upgraded it. I'm tempted by the mini now. I find myself reaching for the MBP more than the iPad though. Just not using the iPad that much, so struggling to justify the mini right now.

After going to Best Buy today and handling the iPad Mini, I might be convinced. I really like the size of that and prefer it to my iPad. Going to sleep on it a few days and perhaps ask for one for my bday in February... I do wish it was retina, which is my only reservation.

I bought the 1, sold it a little before the ipad 2 release and went without, bought an ipad 3 a month after release, then just side graded to the mini. I miss the retina display, but the form factor is so worth it.
