Yeah, sidegrade is the perfect term to describe it. It's a trade-off, but so is the large iPad. Simply a matter of the user's needs and preferences.
I got my OG iPad at launch. I still use it every day. When I was in college I used it for notes, and now I use it mostly for reading, web surfing, light games(puzzles, Infinity Blade I), and watching movies and/or netflix. It is more than suitable for my needs, and when my son is old enough I'll pass it down to him and finally upgrade to whatever is the newest out at the time.

I'm still using my iPad 1 even though iOS 5 has nearly killed it. It's really slow to load anything and apps crash a lot. My iPhone 4 is a lot faster even though they have almost the same specs. I can't afford to upgrade devices whenever I feel like it so I will be keeping this one until it breaks or just won't work at all anymore. When that happens I will get a full sized iPad replacement which will probably be the iPad 5 or 5s.
If anybody's curious; after 2 solid years of ownership with almost daily use my iPad battery is still in good condition. It lasts a noticeably shorter period of time than it used to but I can still get 8 hours of web browsing or 6 hours of heavy use (GPS) out of it.

I have gone from iPad 1 to iPad 4. I did for the use of camera when working and of course operational improve. Since my iPad 4, I won an iPad 2 at work. My wife's uses the iPad 2 and kids use iPad 1. I do see a need to sell them despite people offering to but them.
My boyfriend preordered the iPad 1 and had it delivered on release day. It very quickly became nothing more than a $500 remote for our main computer which is hooked up to our TV.
Just recently it has started getting more use once I realized there was a Kobo app (I get a lot of Chapters gift cards) and once he stopped traveling with his work laptop and started hijacking my MBP when we go on trips, so I use it for surfing, checking my email, and reading.
I'm planning on upgrading to an iPad mini once one with Retina Display comes out. I've always found the iPad way too bulky to lug around, and especially to use as an eReader. But I'm prone to migraines and I find reading on the iPad 1 versus reading on my old Kindle or my iPhone 5 can bring them on after an extended period of time.

I bought an iPad 1 at a deep discount when the iPad 2 was released, they were sold out everywhere, and I wasn't yet convinced that the iPad would be something I'd use much. How wrong I was! From day one, I used it every day. This year, it became annoyingly slow and crashed a lot, so I upgraded to the iPad 4, which I love. I haven't yet sold my iPad 1, but I probably will.
I got my iPad 1 when they were released almost 3 yrs ago and still use it literally every day. I tried ios 5 and it slowed things down way too much so I downgraded to 4.3.5 and that's where I'll stay. Still plenty snappy on 4.3.5. I've also got a 7" Kindle Fire, 7" Nook, 15" laptop, a Netbook, a 5" phone and a desktop. Lots of electronics to play with here. I won't upgrade my ipad. Android makes it too easy to personalize things the way you want them and Apple is far too controlling. Their hardware is awesome though. I've no doubt I'll still be using my iPad 1 in 3 yrs for watching movies on, etc. Not a scratch on it.
I bought a iPad 1 on release day and finally upgraded to the 4th gen on release day. The slow speed of the 1st gen was driving me nuts, Safari kept crashing even on the lightest sites. So happy I upgraded, it's a night and day difference.
I just broke down and added an iPad mini to my fleet. I like the size of it much more than my iPad 1. It's much better to type on. I am posting this from it which I hate doing on both my iPhone and iPad.
