whether Steve wanted one or not ... the Industry will dictate a need for one. If Apple does not play along, iPads will seem big and clunky one day compared to smaller just as powerful devices.

Agree 100%
In fact- IMO- iPad already looks big and clunky.
In NYC subway those with nooks and kindles look much more comfortable with the smaller form factor. The iPad in the park or a cafe/bar is obnoxious.
A smaller iPad is the future.

Have you seen a 17 inch MacBook Pro lately?

yup ... the sweet size on the tablets will end up being around 7"

The old iPads are soon to look like big old dinosaurs.

Did nt Steve Jobs say " he " would never produce a smaller iPad?
Sounds like a question but he did state that explicitly.
He said there was no need for it. He always wanted to produce something that the public would find a need for.
We all know they will sell but it will be no blockbuster device that will follow along in the success iPhone iPod and iPad has and of course Macs to. True mega blockbuster products that made history on his watch. Under his demands fr how it works, hw it looks and how its( they ) were and still are marketed.
I think it's very disrespectful to his marketing genius to produce this when only months before he passed on he said "no way".
Nothing against Tim Cook but don't he remember anything?
Good boss or not he has stepped into the spot in this company Jobs created it and should be regarded still for the things he said. I just think here s something weird about going directly against what such a genius recommends.
Apple can afford a small seller even if they decide to stop producing it after 18 months or so. No big loss but it's not a product in step with the companies success at that point. This is my take on it , my opinion wright or wrong. I am making it sound like I'm sure of all this but there is a good chance judging by the buzz it will be mediocre at best in numbers sold.
I have owned every apple product produced at one time or another but I can not say I need or want a larger iPhone or a smaller iPad. I eagerly looked forward to them launching. Not so much with the mini pad...i think i want one but thats the spoiled apple brat in me. Jmo. Really miss Steve Jobs at the keynotes. RIP

Maybe it won't be called iPad at all. Maybe it will have a different name

Comments made years ago in a different world, nascent tablet market, inferior technology, different, different, different. Have you read his comments? They are quite a long way from saying he forbids a 7" tablet forever. Check them out here.

What was true (for Steve, Apple, the market...) then does not have to be true now, and just because Steve is dead doesn't mean that we should interpret those comments as gospel for all time simply because we can't ask him what his opinion is today. Notice in the comments he talks about user testing and Apple researching this - it's not just Steve's opinion, it's the Apple machine, and if they come out with a 7" tablet today, then the Apple machine has decided it's time for a 7" tablet to make it's debut.

Bingo!!!

Steve is dead and untapped consumer profits remain. That's the only equation that matters to Apple despite front-page memorials.

Bring on the mini.

1. Steve Jobs is dead.
2. When Steve Jobs said "no", it meant "no" until the situation changed and it changed to "yes". Of course not every situation changes.

Steve Jobs said "no" because at the time he said this, building a 7" iPad was not in Apple's best interest. If today Apple decides that building a smaller iPad is in Apple's best interest then they will do it, and Steve Jobs would do exactly the same thing.

Apple /// computer? Quicktake camera?

Agree gnasher729...

Lets end this guys...Steve Jobs is Dead. The mini is coming out. End of story

He is right 7 inch tablets are useless when you have a smartphone. People just want them because google made one it's a comptiton thing.
