I am definitely considering an LTE watch next time I upgrade. Having to jog with my iPhone on my waist is not terrible but it would be nice not to. I stream music to my Airpods from my iPhone - and it gives me the ability to dial 911 if there is an emergency.

Not necessarily looking forward to the $13/mo x years just to have my watch use my cellular plan. But I have noticed more people just using their watches when they go out. It is very enticing.

Yup. LTE is a nice advantage to have, for a while, carriers were offering free 90 days, and I think they discontinued that promotion, once LTE was introduced with the Series 3. I couldn’t justify the price, simply because I can be in a position where I don’t need to have my Apple Watch solely relied on, and my iPhone can stay in the car or at home if I’m doing something out and about. But still, I see those who want LTE where they can leave their larger iPhone behind, and/or quick check an iMessage/notification.

My wife and I both got the original Apple Watch when it launched. In May of 2018 we upgraded to the S3. We got the LTE model but didn't activate LTE at first. Then one night at dinner we were talking and Tmobile was offering the first 3 months free if activated so we did.......and never looked back. Love being able to go on walks and bike rides and taking only my watch and airpods.

I believe you can e watch to dial 911 even if cellular not active. US requirement at least.

This is one reason to get the cellular version even if you don’t intend to sign up for monthly cell service. If you’re ever in a dire crisis, you can still call emergency services.

No you can live the iPhone at home but keep it open your LTE AW will work but it will cost you around $15 per month

If your iPhone is turned completely off:

Voice calls - Works
Blue Bubble IMessage _ Works
Green Bubble SMS Text -Doesn’t work

The reason someone would want LTE, is just have independency away from the iPhone. For example, if you were going to the grocery store, you could use your Apple Watch to take or receive a phone call/message, or if you want to leave your phone in the hotel room if you were away, that Apple Watch could serve a purpose for a quick phone call or message. You can also stream your music directly from your Apple Watch to The AirPods as another example with the ability of LTE.

You can stream to airpods directly from the watch on the non-LTE model, do it with mine all the time.
