i bet apple wants a cheaper rate which they aren't going to get
its not 2001 anymore

Read the MacRumors news from the other month. Apple has offered to pay Pandora's rates for a similar service. I believe the labels feel that they got taken in the original iTunes negotiations and want to get their money back :D. It looks like they want Apple to pay more than everyone else.

Sorry, no mystery here.

Apple is trying to get as much money out of this as they can.

Don't forget, they currently make a ton on itunes - and this (and other services already out there) is going to hurt that revenue stream, right?
Google All Access is also going to take a big chunk too.

buying from itunes and CD's is going the way of the dodo

Yes, and a service already exists where you can listen to what you want.

Apple's approach is basically Pandora with some minor tweaks...what's the point? How is it different besides saying "Apple" on it.

Umm...yeahhhhhh. Not so much.

Yep, it's going to hurt Apple but it will destroy Spotify.

Can't destroy Spotify if you don't

1) provide a native iOS app that allows downloads for offline listening
2) can listen to what you want when you want it

Ad Supported

According to the Verge article Apple is not willing to pay upfront as Google did but would share the Ad Revenue

If this "rumor" is true it sounds like Apple's iRadio is going to have Ads.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/17/4340274/how-google-beat-apple-to-a-streaming-music-service

"Multiple industry insiders say that Google also had an easier time of getting licensed because it agreed to pay advances to some of the major copyright owners. Apple has a long history of refusing to pay advances and — at least initially — didn't offer any. Sources say that Apple has agreed to pay content owners a share of ad revenue, a per-play fee, and a minimum guarantee."

Why? I like to own things. Renting music is not for everyone. I spend less money per year in iTunes than I would paying for a subscription to a streaming music service. Considering newer music is pretty hit and miss these days, I'd rather find the gems and buy them. I already own all the music from the last few decades that I would want to listen to.

Meh at this point I no longer care, we've got a great bunch of options to get away from the old iTunes-only model. Spotify, Rdio, Pandora, Google Music, We7, Deezer, Mflow, Grooveshark, etc

It's laughable that Apple, with their domination of the music market still has not reached a deal, whilst a bunch of unknowns have no problem getting what are quite clearly, very decent deals in place.

Then, recall how long it took to have The Beatles on iTunes.

Have you even read the article?

I think Apple should just buy Sony and take over all it's media content and do whatever with the electronics part of the business. Sony's Market Cap is about 20 Billion and Apple would need 50.1 percent to control it. This would have made more sense a few months ago when Sony was worth 8 Billion less but still, Sony owns a lot of digital assets that Apple can assimilate.

Yeah and have Apple take on all of Sony's debt. Thats really a smart move for Apple.

Most music today is throw away, not worth owning. Renting is prefect for this type of music.

And again, how is this different from options already available? What is different about Apple's music service compared to others? Nobody can answer this.

I'm really hoping Apple nails this. And at a very low (free?) price.

Because I'm not really super into music, so a radio-like functionality would mostly suit my needs, but Every once in a while I might like to hear a particular song, or listen to a particular artist/CD. So like a radio with a limited number of on-demands

And yes Apple could easily make this free as a bonus to the ecosystem. Plus it promotes music discovery and easy of purchase through iTunes.

Renting and Owning or a Mixture of both are preferences.

How is the music today "throw away" music?
And how is it any different from music 10-20 years ago?

You are giving your opinion and nothing more.

Greedy will be greedy.

Apple doesn't have iRadio. That's why nobody can answer it.

Only when/if it's released can it be compared. Until then all comparison's are speculation.

Maybe because Apple didn`t announce the so called music service yet?
