That is a dslr - interchangeable lenses. It's also really expensive as a starter camera gift, which is what the OP is looking for.

It's got an electronic viewfinder and no mirror. No mirror, no reflex. No reflex no Single Lens Reflex.

I think people call these mirrorless system cameras now or something.

Yes, or something...:)

Leica cameras have interchangeable lenses, but they call them range finders.

Yes, they do call them that sometimes. I have 7 Leica cameras. However, the R7 I have is an SLR and the 1930 Leica A (which I use frequently) was built before they did interchangeable lenses and the rangefinder was an external option that looks like a periscope. The II, IIIa, M3, M6TTL, and M8 are indeed coordinated range finders with interchangeable lenses.

I must have misread your previous post because I thought you were saying that the Panny body the other guy posted about was a DSLR because it used interchangeable lenses. I know you're the king of this forum and do not desire to offend thee!

:D

Solid evidence to my point that they seem to be in the majority in many areas? Sure, I'll give you that one- that's well within the margin of error and intent doesn't equal purchase for sure- but solid evidence that you're mistaken, I think I'd win that even if they were off by 25%. The thought that the DSLR world is an overwhelmingly male-dominated one is obviously mistaken, and I do think that is an important point.
It is absolutely not solid evidence he's mistaken. It is actually solid evidence he isn't ;) The figures speak for itself and you can only draw 1 conclusion: you need to ask the question he did since most but not all (!!!!!!!!!) females want a dslr. The question therefore is not sexist but simply very necessary. The way he worded it is the only thing you can question.

Btw, figures alone do not tell the story. Women might agree on getting a dslr for use at home because it is something you can store at home. If they had to carry it with them on a trip they may choose something different, something smaller and lighter. Men on the other side may not care, they just want to use something big. Not his is not sexist, it is just simple psychology which doesn't apply to all.

Anyway, looking at the current digital camera offerings I don't think you should only look at dslr. The system camera's (micro 4/3, EVIL, etc.) have some very nice options like the Olympus Pen series, the Panasonic GF1 & GF2, the Sony NEX 5, etc. You might want to ask her some questions about photography to get some info on what you should be looking for (obviously ask her in such a way you're not clearly giving away you're gonna buy her a camera).

My initial response to the review of the GH2 was that "looks like a duck" thing. Even DP review makes a few slips and calls it an SLR. Mirror-less cameras are an interesting concept, as are the micro 4/3 sensors. Competition and innovation is critical to the industry. As for the king thing, I know I post a lot and have my own opinions, but hope I don't come across as overbearing. If so, I need a break...:)

Mirrorless cameras are my favorites! I've only had limited experience with EVFs, with the accessory one I got for my GF1. I don't like it. The slight delay is uncomfortable to me and the required eye relief isn't compatible with glasses. I'd rather use an uncoupled shoe mount optical finder, personally.

I was just kidding about the "king thing". I know you do a lot to help with the photo contribution threads and I appreciate that.
