Digital WWDC 2021 Event Expected as Comic Con, E3 and Anime Expo Cancel In-Person Plans

Personally, I don't expect the world to come back to what we would call 2019 normal until about 2026/2027. Its sad, but until the entire world is vaccinated, then in person events will be a thing of the past for a while. Also, I think the big companies find it a relief. I use to attend one almost every year. The last one I intended in 2019, I felt like the company behind just felt annoyed and fed up.
Once a sufficient percentage of people is vaccinated, the virus will die out as it will not have enough new people to infect.

Assuming the current timeline of April/May for mass-vaccine rollout is kept, we should be able to have in-person events again as soon as the end of this year or even sooner.

Try to be more optimistic. We NEED to get back to normal. Human beings are social by nature and we WON'T put up with this much longer as a species.

I thought to actually attend all of the 2020 classrooms and dev sessions you still needed to purchase a ticket, only the keynote as usual was free?
Nope. As long as you had a developer account you could attend sessions. The interactive ones were done by lottery, if I recall, though.

Big media announced that already 130 million people world wide received the vaccination, and thus infection and death numbers are dropping dramatically. The vaccine is so effective, that with 1,5 % of the world population vaccinated we can already see a huge change for the better, it's almost as if we already won against Covid. It's enourmousmonously safe and effective. Soon we can have in person events again, everyone who is vaccinated will soon be allowed to travel again (if they can still walk after the vaccination).

I miss the Steve Jobs WWDCs when they talked Mac OS X... and here is how we’re are making Mac OS X even better... Grand Central Dispatch boom!
Had to have a quick reminisce... So much more personality and fun to these keynotes that the audience could share and experience, vs the virtual, sterile, clinical productions of late. The products for me personally, hold up - even today in terms of aesthetics. Only just got rid of my perfect 20” ACD. Apple at the top of their game...

The laughs when Schiller ‘became’ Balmer were cracking! Side note, Leopard and Snow Leopard remain the best OS Xs for me personally.

Got my vote to go back to these ASAP, such a shame Jobs isn’t still around.

They missed an opportunity in 2020, they should have overlayed a "canned whooping" track, like a laughter track on comedy shows but with recordings of "the Apple faithful" whooping every time anything vaguely exciting is mentioned.

It’s necessary for 2021 to still keep crowds at a minimum. But.... optimistically, I think 2022 we should finally have a sense of normalcy restored.

The online event was better. Only Craig is a natural speaker. The others are half scared to death.I found them to be more relaxed on the prerecorded online event.

We see the same at scientific conferences. Attendance is going up which is good. I think online event and conferences are here to stay either as a complement or pure online conferences. For some, we do not have to sit on a plane to move between places. Apple keynote events has absolutely no value for being in person events. It is not a football game, it is about information of dry subject like computers.

I agree with others saying the online events for last year's WWDC were very good, I am looking forward to the 2021 WWDC.

I wouldn't going to an in-person WWDC in the future, though. I enjoyed the PowerBuilder and Lotus Notes conferences I went to in the past, and it would be fun to attend the WWDC in person, at least once.

Plus I have never been to the San Francisco area and I hear it is a lovely place to visit. And my wife would love to go. 🥰

Craig is definitely a favorite of mine when it comes to keynote speakers. If they gave him free reign of the keynote from start to finish, I wouldn't complain 😂

Agreed, he is enthusiastic and looks like he is having a great time.
Exactly! It's clear as day when someone is really into what they're talking about and they are confident when speaking. It's something that he shows VERY well and it goes a long way. Watching other speakers during the virtual events last year, you could really tell that some of them were much more comfortable that way than they were at the in person events, which was great. Craig...just seemed like Craig! Just as fun to listen to as always! Granted he's been a speaker for a long time, so he's got this nailed down, but still! I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard that WWDC was going to be virtual last year, but I really enjoyed how they did it.

Of course I'm looking forward to the in-person stuff returning, I think they could really augment things (for lack of a better word) by keeping this virtual format around for certain aspects.

they are better
Not last year's version.

In particular the loss of the PDFs for each talk is ridiculous. It was really nice to have PDFs of the slides for each talk; faster to scan for everything that wasn't of central interest.
Last year all that was available was the video, and no adult has hundreds of hours free to listen/watch all that content on the hope that you see something useful/interesting.

If they bring back the PDFs, I don't care about the rest of the in person vs virtual business.

This is about saving money by the event companies. That's it.
Really? You were present at the company meetings that decided this?

The Developer app (at least the Mac Developer app) has transcripts for some/many/all of the videos.

Granted, not the same as a nice PDF, but the transcripts could be a good alternative.

Yes. I was present and the corporate board meetings for all the companies that decided these decisions. This username is a pseudonym and I first-hand witnessed these decisions being made.

With so may choosing to cancel instead of going digital, perhaps WWDC can be moved to an earlier dates now... as well if they want. If Apple can do digital, others can too.

You've seen one event, you've seen them all.. I'd even say, this is just giving Apple a leg-up in the race..
