By that time it will have been roughly two years since the 16 inch MPB was released.

It's surprising they have not updated their flagship laptop in that long a time.

And disappointing.

Hopefully it will have been worth the wait for those who have been in the market.

Don’t agree, the M2 replaces the M1 as the low end chip with the latest cores, we might skip the M1X and have the M2 and M2X release at the same time in October.
Don't fall in the "name tells it all" trap. They have a new chip, they could call it M1X or M2 or M34 o SUPERCHIP it will still be the same chip with a different name. That is called marketing. Of course M2 will make the machine *feel* newer and faster than M1X, but it's just a placebo effect.

They could announce it next week, the following week, the first week of August, second week, etc., etc.

I guess my point is the Digitimes article doesn't say "September."

The headline writer is projecting that, but it is NOT what the Digitimes article actually says and it conflicts with Apple's iPhone launch patterns (have they ever announced a MB at an iPhone fall event?).

Makes zero sense to let it share time with the goose making the golden eggs.

My pet theory is they don't want to release the re-design until they are able to do so at an event with journalists in attendance so the machines can be shown off.

Assuming vaccinations and the slow of the virus, I think later in the year makes more sense.

Another Boo-Hoo News.. Don't see them announced until October-November. Apple is just buying time to secure the production quantity.. Otherwise they're screwed.. Probably announced in Oct and released November or pushed back a month further up to December. All I care is new mac-mini..

I agree the naming is semantics, the point I was making is that the chip for the 14 and 16 inch mbp’s isn’t the next chip after the M1, I think most consumers will be confused if you have an M1 (low), M2 (pro) then an M3 (low)

I do think that they’ll have the M1,M2 closely follow the release of the A series, then some time later the X variant will release, I think COVID and chip shortages have thrown the cycle they wanted to use out.

I wonder if any of the upcoming event(s), will be a live in-person unveiling in Cupertino headquarters.

And if it’s September along with iPhones/Watch, I’m guessing one might need to wait until November for actual shipments.

Damn, and I was going to pull the trigger on a Mac mini this weekend.

No mention of intel version of the 16”. Ughhh. I was hoping to get an 11th gen to replace my 2012 rMBP to last me another 9-10 years

Despite a lot of brickbats thrown at me, 🙄 I still contend that because of the current chip shortage situation, Apple may have shelved the M1X SoC. Reason: work on the A15 SoC with its more efficient CPU and GPU cores was completed probably back in April 2021, and Apple is using the delay from the chip shortage to accelerate the work on the A15-derived M2 and M2X SoC's. Expect a major announcement in December 2021-January 2022 time frame for new Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with various iterations of the M2 SoC architecture.

New Mac mini is Late Q1/22, early Q2/22 at best.

Agreed...there is no and will be no M1x/z.

TSMC said they were focusing on supplying Apple and the auto manufacturers with their chips.

True, but that may only apply to the A15 used on the 2021 iPhones. TSMC probably won't produce anything beyond the M1 SoC until probably late 2021.

I can’t believe that adding back standard features and removing gimmicks like the Touch Bar is seen as radical.

This is not likely at all. We aren't "skipping" anything. The chip that is in the new MacBook Pro existed a year ago, and was reported on. They didn't just move to a new chip architecture because it has taken a couple extra months to get it out the door. The product was designed from the start with the M1X.

It is also going to be announced and shipped several months before any "M2" product. You think they're going to introduce the M2X months before the M2? Lol.
