Last week we reported that Neo-Modus had posted that a Direct Connect OS X Client was in the works. Direct Connect is a P2P file trading system which claims 1 Petabyte of data shared. Their network is based on a "hub" system of individual user servers, similar to Hotline/Carracho in setup.

Jon Hess, the developer, let us know today that the Mac OS X Client has been released. Their main site reflects this announcement, and the client may be downloaded from their download page.

first post!

heheh

I'm curious to find out if we (OS X users) also will have to share at least 30 GB or begin getting threats from other users that we are just 'leeching'?

What are your experiences so far?

So far, it feels like hotline minus the hunting obscure web pages for usernames and passwords.

I'll stick to Acquisition and Lamewire, even if it means getting less results.

Isn't the webpages/usernames/pw the worst part of hotline?

I personally file acquisition and limewire pratically useless.

I'll certainly give this a try, I hate poking through Limewire crap. HL has been pretty crappy for over a year now. When people started asking for "donations" it got bad, and really sketchy, legaly.

I have been using Direct Connect on the PC for over a year now and I love it. I was really happy to have it ported to os x. The problem is that there will be few mac files on the hubs. We will be stuck with mp3's and movies since apps and games will all be pc. Hopefully over time os x hubs will appear.

Oh man...

The whole concept sucks bigtime. I can´t connect to ANY hub, mostly because I don´t have 5 GB of minimum (!) files to share!! And btw I cannot connect to more than one hub at a time, as it seems. I get disconnected/redirected all the time.

XNap maybe slower, but it is far mor convenient than this BS system!! Sorry, but I needed that!

i can log on to multiple hubs fine but is anyone else having trouble just trying to browse the users files themselves? i just get the "waiting" message no matter who i try to connect to and it stays that way the entire time. am i missing something or some kind of requirement i have to meet?

GRRRRR!

all mine does is force quit. unexpectedly quit crap. thus far not impressed. as for limewire if i can ever down load anything its not bad but it never connects to any incomming hubs. help in either would be appreciated.

Crap...For a while there...

I thought Direct connect was only for the mac...Damn it....I guess your right movies and mp3, oh, and of course, let's not forget PORN.....Forget it.I'll stick with hotline..

OK, so lets stop complaining and make a direct connect hub for mac users. someone has to have an old server out there we can use.

DC Progress?

I just tried the program and it seems to take quite a while for the files to become available to browse is this just the way it works?

From my personal experience, Carracho rocks Hotline, and Carracho is mac only. I've found stuff on Carracho and Hotline didn't have at all. No, Carracho is not great for mp3s and movies and such... but its great for apps.

Hahaha! I like your sig, here are some other variations on the LOTR "wizards" line:

"Do not meddle in the affairs of sysadmins, for they are easy to annoy and have the root password."

"Do not meddle in the affairs of sysadmins, they are quick to anger and have no need for subtlety"

Myster

I am in the process of writting a program in my spare time called Myster.

Imagine hotline but with an automatically managed tracker, no logins and real time searching and you get the idea of what I'm trying to do with Myster.

bascially all you need to do is type in a query and click search. The network is still small but the more people use it the bigger it will become.

anyways here's the link

http://www.mysternetworks.com/

seems a lot like IRC. lots of commands to memorize and type in and different hub/channels. the sharing limits are good i think, cuts down on leechers. if you dont have 10gb of files worth sharing then i really have to wonder — just rip some cds and you will have 10gb in no time.

the only problem i see is that i cant browse. like another user said, i just get stuck trying to download file lists. either im missing something (does the file list request get put in a queue?) or there is a rather large bug in this release.

Too bad this is a steaming pile and doesn't work, period. What a waste of my time.

Try setting it to passive mode and reconnecting. That worked for me. I still haven't found any decently fast connections though, and a lot of the hubs seem to be in sweden.

I think it's Jaguar only.

Finally, a real alternative to limewire. I have been using dc on the pc for the past year. This osx version runs great. I have had no trouble connecting to the smaller hubs. The ones with the 20+ gig sharing quota is a bit too much for me. I don't even have that much to share.

I still think Kazaalite under VPC is the best way to leech...er I mean evaluate music.

so i have a question for those you you who seem to have it working and who have experience with the pc version. when you are trying to browse other user's files do you typically have to wait a long time? is DC putting my request for a file list into some sort of queue?

i have gotten one file list so far, so i know it is not completely broken, but all the others still are listed as 'waiting' although waiting for what i have no idea.
