iPhone 3G Results

Well after the Dolphins wrapped it up in Buffalo (Go Dolphins!) I played around with the Sunday Ticket app using 3G on the iPhone 4. The result is expected...it's certainly watchable but not anything you would write home about. The audio held out well and the video was choppy at best but not as bad as Realplayer circa 2000 quality. Something to consider is that here in Hawaii we generally have pretty good 3G all over the island, so your mileage will certainly vary. The biggest challenge was getting past the loading screen (see below)

For those interested in the quality of the "to go" subscription.

I'm down in South Florida and watching this over 3g is painful.. I tried on both my iPad and iPhone... on 3g when it can connect, many times you get a message saying "technical difficulties" when it finally does connect the quality is horrendous... if you intend on watching this strictly on the iPhone or iPad over 3g I'd be a little weary to drop $350.. when the video and audio freeze and lock up, it upsets you more than if you weren't able to watch the game! I don't know how many times I felt like just throwing the iPhone across the room..

At $350, I think I can pass. That price just seems a little ridiculous to me....

The price is most definitely ridiculous compared with NBA League Pass or MLB.tv especially considering with NBA you get 82 of your teams games and MLB you get 160+ games and with this you get 16 of your teams games but it's always been around this price for just the TV product and this is the first year they have let people who don't have DirectTV (like me) get it and access it on a variety of products including iPad and iPhone. www.nfl.com/gamepass is a better deal but only accessible on a computer and overseas.

I hate paying it but it's the cost of living where your team doesn't play.

If the NFL was smart (and not out to fleece the regular football loving consumer) they would open this up to everybody and price it at $99 and then they would have a ton of people signing up for it, but until DirectTV stops paying them $4,000,000,000 (that's billion with a B) for the exclusive rights, then it will never happen.

If you call DirecTV you can usually get them to give it to you for $120-$180 with To-go kicked in for free or reduced cost. I paid $175 with To-Go for this season. They want subscribers, if you ask you can usually get some sort of discount on the price.

That doesn't make sense, because the 350 is just for the to go service. You don't get access to watch on tv, just on a computer or smart phone... So you cant get the to go for free..

You are confused, to-go is a $50 add-on to the Sunday Ticket price.

If you call DirecTV they will deal with the price of the complete package. You can't get To-Go without the Sunday ticket, and you can't get the Sunday ticket without being a Directv subscriber.

my experience of TO GO was pretty good, i was running on 3G on my iPad in Boulder, CO...the directv twitter said that they were having some issues, so the choppy streaming may have been due to that. think im gonna give them a call tomorrow and try to get some sort of credit since everyone is getting discounts

That is not entirely correct. I am not a DirecTV subscriber. I have Oceanic Cable in Hawaii but can not get DirecTV where I live due to HOA rules.

Following the link on the first page of this thread, I was able to purchase Sunday Ticket + To-Go. Obviously because I am not a DirectTV subscriber then I can not get TV access but I can get access via iPad, iPhone or Mac (even one connected to a HDTV)

Watch NFL Sunday Ticket without being a DirecTV subsciber

I pulled the trigger and got the Sunday Ticket without Directv and was blown away I could watch the Red Zone Channel on Dish while sitting on the couch watching my Patriots on the Ipad....luv it!!!

I was in total command central on Sunday. Totally geeked out flipping through every game on directv all while controlling the ipad app for 4 hours.

It was cool but even over wifi I had issues with the video but it was expected. For about the first 7 seconds the video was unwatchable anytime I changed channels and then it became watchable.

It also failed to respond to me trying to switch games sometimes. I think it would be much better if there was a way to turn off the video (I know we can pause it) but sometimes I jsut want to see stats or highlights or quick score update etc..

Overall a great idea just needs to work out the kinks

Just picked this up and can't wait to use it this weekend.

This got me thinking though... with the new Apple TV and AirPlay coming out soon, does anyone here have this app installed with iOS4.2 beta running that could tell us if there is the option to send to Apple TV? I know it's still beta and everything is subject to change.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part though, knowing DirecTV they wouldn't want people with the ticket to show up to friends houses and stream the games to TV's.
