Iris Pro is very good in terms of performance but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's better than the 650M. It would seem that if you pumped up the resolution and graphics quality in games, the 650M nearly always has the edge over Iris Pro. A good article to check out: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6993/intel-iris-pro-5200-graphics-review-core-i74950hq-tested

That's why I'm wondering if the Iris Pro's only real advantage is less power consumption, not performance. I'm actually considering a refurbished 15 inch with the 650M.

I would say that yes, its main advantage is that it has a smaller power consumption compared to the 650M. The refurbished 15 inch is definitely not a bad choice if you're considering that and a 13 inch. I used to use a 13 inch Macbook before and I can tell you after I've upgraded to a 15 inch it was godsend.

That's my suspicion too regarding display size, and if I opted for a 13 inch, it will only have Iris (not Pro), so graphic wise at least, a refurbished MBP with 650M and 15 inches actually looks like the cheaper and better choice.
