The US has to go through the same thing but the Aussies have it worse. There is so many issues with TV rights and that is the reason why it is hard to rent some movies. Networks don't want you to be able to download the movies when they bought the rights to show it on their channel. The good thing is that with a move to iTunes, it will eventually weaken the ability of TV stations to control these rights. It will take longer for the rest of the world as you would have the same negotiations with networks from every country.

The rest of the world (including me) will continue to pirate US tv shows then ;)

Damn, I wanted the tablet to be a usable device. Not another Gogglebox.

Hmmm. Some orrents you can get sane night as show. Ever winder why the iPhone never had flash. Google it. Why oay when a jail broken ohine will do, worse i want live Mike MLB not steaming. And where iscABC lost V and other cool shows.
Worse, most channels offer the content free next day and play on almost everthing iPhone andmost devices will have flash soon so I dint know how this will play out.

Peace.

Hope this happens. I also hope that they roll it out her in the UK to compete with Sky. It would be nice to have a system where we watch what we want and don't have to pay for all the junk that we never will.

Would as many people watch Hulu if they had to pay to subscribe to it? No.

If they have to? no. Have to is the wrong model. Options are the right model.

This isn't anything groundbreaking. Could achieve the same thing with cable, a DVR, and Sling. Some gamechanger

Sling consumes bandwidth, requires you to be a gadget head, and isn't going to work everywhere (not everywhere has 3G).

If there are 4 pay models:

1) stream free, no caching, with commercials (as with Hulu now)
2) stream for subscription (perhaps with tiers), possible DRM'ed cache, no commercials (sort of like Rhapsody and Netflix)
3) download pay-per-view, with DRM'ed cache, no commercials
4) download pay-for-ownership, no DRM, no commercials

and it applies to all media:

a) e-books
b) e-newspapers and periodicals
c) current "talk radio" and "music radio shows" (live internet radio)
d) browsable music and static podcasts (like Rhapsody and iTunes)
e) current individual tv shows, music videos, and tv movies (like Hulu)
f) archived movies and seasons of tv shows (like Netflix)

From there, paying for cable, maintaining a DVR and Sling ... all of that becomes "for suckers". Pay for whatever level of services you want (maybe even mix them), and don't pay for things you don't want/need. For the money I pay for DirecTV, or that I have paid in the past for cable, combined with my Rhapsody subscription ... I could probably cut that in half (maybe even less). Pay for #2 for general shows and music, pay for #4 on just the things I want to keep in the long run. If some content come out for #3 and/or #4 first and only for #1 and/or #2 after a delay ("premium content" delays), then I might pay for a few things I _really_ want to see, early, on #3.

Those people who don't want to pay at all ... they don't have to. They can get their content with commercials and ads. It's only if you want added benefits (removing commercials, off-line viewing, "ownership") that you have to pay.

If iTunes did that, I'd pay. Heck, if any provider gave all of that, I'd sign up.

It's a whole different ballgame in the US, but if itunes in Australia wants TV to work, I think they need to focus more on TV from the pay networks, and stuff not airing on TV at all in Australia.

I do love my appletv, but since I bought the play tv addon for the ps3, there's really not a lot of need to go to the store and buy these shows. Sure freeview says we can't take them off of the hard disc, but a quick region change fixes that problem ;)

i know how behind we are on some shows here down under, and that won't change soon. and also it's very very doubtful they're going to start uploading shows to the store before it gets aired on free to air. so focus on shows that free to air doesn't give a **** about! eureka's a good example. shown for a few weeks on ten, then ignored until scifi aus picks it up. sancturay! sure, this still means we have to wait till these shows get aired on austar, but offering this kind of content makes us less inclined to get pay tv.

there's some funny things going on with rights as well in australia, so I don't know the legalities of it. example - colbert report. you can buy a subscription on itunes, watch it on pay tv's comedy channel and as of next year, watch on abc2, ad free. and GO! is now airing old BBC shows, like blackadder. shouldn't that be for the ABC?

wait till play tv gets out in the US. it's a tiny bit buggy for the time being, but it's well worth it...

Take your hand off your thing and type with two hands.

Still no news....

Well, it all seems good and interesting. Except for the fact this is US-only.
IF Apple wants to make serious money in selling hardware they have to make content available all over the world. The success of the iPhone was, in great part, due to the App Store being available worldwide. The Tablet, AppleTV or whatever, will only stand a chance outside the US if they are backed with an Store that truly delievers content and not some half backed solution.

I own an AppleTV and have a US account. There is a world of difference in my usage compared to "prior" to the US account. I bet the device would be HUGE in terms of sales almost instantaneously should content be made available.

I know it isn't entirely down to Apple to make it come true, but I think they should invest a great deal of resources in these negotations.

what is this i dont even

Probably Fox that's holding out. They're trying to stick it to everybody right now, on-air and online. Screw them. Fox sucks anyway. 24 is on it's last legs and American Idol without Cowell will last as long as Paula Abdul in a spelling bee.

I would think NBC, since they were just bought by a company that will lose customers (Comcast).

I think it's increasingly obvious that the much-rumored Apple tablet will combine an improved ARM11 processor variant based on the PA Semiconductor patents and some very advanced GPU unit.

This will allow for smooth 720p widescreen video playback, something very necessary for playing back HD-quality videos downloaded through the iTunes Store. This means content from ABC, ESPN networks and CBS (as mentioned in the original article) can be played back at 720p resolution cleanly on this device.

One thing we still haven't answered is what kind of mass storage will Apple use? Current SSD's above 120 GB in capacity are still very expensive, and Apple has demonstrated it can build a device with a very small hard drive with long battery life such as the current "6.5G" iPod classics with the 120 GB and 160 GB single-platter hard drives. I can take a guess that Apple could use a 240 GB or 320 GB dual-platter 1.8" hard drive, since the tablet's case size is big enough to hold a fairly large battery pack to allow the device to run 9-11 hours on a full charge.

Also, besides the obvious 802.11b/g/n and HSDPA 3G cellular wireless connectivity, what connectors will the tablet offer? I see at least the standard iPod dock connector port, and Apple may decide to which video out port to offer, HDMI or Mini DisplayPort.

For those who think Hulu will continue to be free, think again. Hulu is currently working out a pay system that I read will start sometime in 2010. I myself subscribe to 7 shows on Hulu. I get very bad TV reception and depend on my Internet to see all my shows. Shows that have great repeat value for me I buy the season sets (Big Bang Theory, True Blood, SG-1, and a few others).

if it is done right Apple will have another winner IMHO. No one else out there is doing up like Apple. I don't see them clowns at HTC or Sony or LG doing any of this. They are just waiting for the next wave of hype so they can tag along, release a product 50 times a week, get some netplay on Engadget and say they are an Apple(insert the Apple product here) killer. Same old s***.

Does this mean that there will be a new Apple TV soon? I'm getting one for Christmas... I should've seen this coming.

the only thing that worries me about this tablet is the fact that it will probably be some sort of iphone based OS. when i go away would i be able to do things like run a proper office software and stuff like that? sure, the app store will probably explode with apps for the tablet but there still would probably be limits on how much you'll be able to do with.

ahh, i'll be honest. i just wish they'd make a slightly smaller MB. but that won't probably happen ;)

i dont even know anymore about apple tv. it looks like they're not going 1080 in the near future, so apart from a hard disc boost, why even bother changing anything else inside?? the thing works well now with what it's given to do...

I'd like to see at least one USB port on the thing. Be handy to plug in a thumb drive and copy files to/from

as well as keyboard and maybe mouse/trackball/trackpad

well the keyboard is going to be the touchscreen. to be perfectly honest i dont think we'll get a usb at all and apple will push the mobile me service. "share data between computer and tablet"

still, we can hope...

Doesn't the Itunes store first have to have HD-quality movies?

Don't believe the low bit-rate 'HD' lie.

i finally bought a ps3 some months ago and i can tell the difference between a 720 itunes file and a 1080 bluray disc.

it may look better than the SD releases, but i'm certainly not giving up BD for it ;)

LOL, you're actually linking to a George Ou article? Hasn't he been banned from the tech world? He's like Rob Enderle without paychecks from Dell! Some other articles by Ou:

While I agree that it's not as good as a Blu-Ray disc, it would consume too much bandwidth. Besides most people can't tell the difference between HD and DVD quality.

$37.95 (current price of basic cable) or less and I’m sold.
I hope the pricing doesn't resemble cable pricing at all. I'd much rather pay a couple dollars per month per channel, and only pay for the channels I watch.

I'm trying to cut monthly bills, not add to them. Personally I prefer to just buy the episodes that I am interested, no interest in a monthly service.

I still remember when cable was first introduced and we were sold on the idea that cable would one day be cheaper then pervious offered models and that broadband would be cheaper then dialup... instead, I'm paying more and other then having a better image, don't feel like I have better services.

Give me a tablet with an HDMI-out and a subscription service incorporating HD content, and I am sold. Otherwise, it's a no-go for me.

IMHO it will be Wi-Fi 802.11n (or better?) I/O for video via the Apple TV or the Mac / PC with iTunes. It may have FW and USB too of course but why tether such a device in this day and age?
