On a slow DSL line I'd imagine the experience would be brutal. On a fast cable connection, and with a memory of running games on cassettes and floppies, I can deal with it.

So true...

I have a budget 1.2Mbs DSL line and playing Rayman Legends (which downloads levels during the game) is HORRIBLE, especially when I'm used to Rayman games on a regular console...

Thx for this ;)

Did you try to pair 2 Nimbus controllers or can one player use the Siri remote?

I already had a SteelSeries Stratus and have been doing two players with that and the Nimbus with no problems. Other than finding out first-hand how much better the Nimbus is than the Stratus.

It's not going to help that much anyway. The app is only allowed to 'own' 2GB or so, so the extra storage will come and go depending on what tvOS decides to do with it. I *have* a 64GB ATV, and mine streams DI constantly (enough that I'm noticing it on my monthly bandwidth use). The ATV right now is probably holding less than 9GB of combined permanent data. It has no need to be purging stuff so either DI uses much more than the upper 20GB limit, or tvOS/DI is being inefficient with what it has.

With retrospect I wish I'd just saved the $100 and grabbed the 32GB model.

Hmmm. I had forgotten about the temporary storage caps. Makes sense.

Bottom line is that people who want to do a lot of gaming on the ATV4 really need a fast connection for maximum enjoyment.

Ok here's my preliminary review...

Great review, and I'd go along with pretty much all of it.

What I don't understand is how the aTV stores streamed data, as it seems like whenever I go back to the game it needs to load lots more, even when I'm playing missions I've already started or in some cases completed. I've got a pretty quick 200mbps connection, and the waiting to stream content is pretty annoying, and the only thing really spoiling a good gaming experience.

My console days are long behind me, although I still have a PS2 in a cupboard and a Wii hooked up to the TV, although I can't remember the last time I switched it on. I do have 3yo daughter though, who I'm sure will enjoy playing some of the games as she gets a little older. The Disney Infinity pack was bought on the pretence it was a present for us both, although I suspect it might be a good few years before she's playing Twilight of the Republic on her own :D

The fact my aTV4 can play games like this though is a really bonus, as it was really bought as a media client and not a games console. Really looking forward to seeing what other can do with it in the future...

This is an understatement.

I just downloaded "Dragon Hunter 5" and, after taking me hours to download what I *thought* was the whole game, it was just the training/initial level. Then it sat as I went to the next one - forever. Then it lost the connection and started me over again...

Some of my games at least it loaded the entire level or game, but this streaming stuff is non-sense.

I already pay $47/month for a 1.2Mbs connection with no cap (grandfathered in). How much for a 200Mbs? (plus they're capped).

Too bad - there's a lot of great games, at least the rate that AppleTV is going - won't be on it (like the Nintendo first parties)...

What apps are bumping into the 2gb limit and redownloading content?

Also, a tvOS update could easily and instantly change the limits of each app (perhaps even depending on the size of your ATV too), thus reducing redownload times. However, you're never going to get more storage space than you start with.

As more apps come out, and as Apple tweaks its local/streaming storage model, I think you're going to find that the 64gb model redownloads far less frequently than the 32gb model. The question remains whether those will happen before you decide to upgrade to the ATV5.

Where are you that you have to pay $47 a month for 1.2Mbs? That seems crazy expensive for basically 2001 internet.

Remember internet is sold in megaBITs per second, when most computing thinks of megaBYTEs. 1 BYTE = 8 BITS. So your 1.2Mbs internet is throttled at about 150 kilobytes per second. That's crazy slow.

I would look at upgrading, you're probably getting soaked on a value (little wonder you're 'grandfathered'!).

And I wouldn't worry about caps. Most places that offer 200Mbs offer caps of 300-500GB per month. To put that in perspective, if you downloaded 24/7 for 30 days with your 150KBs (kilobytes) then you'd only hit 370GB.

He may be in a rural area on satellite or low-grade DSL. Not everyone can easily get 10+ mbps.

The ATV 4 was clearly designed around a near-future where high speed internet is more prolific. We're heading there quick, but perhaps not quick enough for many. But once that happens, the streaming model will make a lot more sense.

Is there any way you can simply purchase the bluetooth Infinity base for the ATV4? I already have this game on the xbox one. Don't want to spend another 100 if I can help it.

So to follow up on my first impressions. I'm, I mean my daughter is, still enjoying Disney Infinity on AppleTV. I've had the chance to compare it against the XBox One version, and I've had chance to become more familiar with the limitations of the AppleTV version in general.

In general, the graphics are clearly a step up on the XBox, but not in a way that seemed to add anything to the experience. The cartoony/fake plastic style of DI lends itself well to simpler textures. I was expecting to be more wowed by the XB1's version. That said, there's a lot of content (especially in the hub) that you simply don't get on the AppleTV.

1) entire sections of the hub are MIA. In particular the Forest Moon of Endor is not present on the AppleTV. Brave's castle is forced to do fill-in work here for jump training.

2) Flynn's arcade is in (apparently) permanent ghost mode. The building exists but is in the white, not yet activated, form. Whether this is due to limitations with the AppleTV, GameCenter, or just that Disney/Avalanche haven't worked out what they want to do here yet, I don't know.

3) Only one account can be active at one time. This means if you're playing two player, the second player is just a second incarnation of the primary player. Essentially this is what other platforms call 'guest mode'. Whatever player two does, adds to player one's stats and achievements.

4) The Disney Infinity site seems to be ignorant of the Apple TV's existence, so you can't link your iOS install's account to your console. To be clear, the accounts are the same, and web-codes for characters and play-sets are shared, but the iOS version just sees that as purchased content.

Many of these limitations are due to memory constraints with the Apple TV, which brings me to my last point. If you're thinking about buying this for the Toy Box specifically, be aware that the Apple TV quickly runs out of memory when building games or worlds in the toy box. I had no trouble at all pegging the memory just working through the training quests in the INterior. You wont be able to make worlds that are as densely furnished on the AppleTV as you will see on other consoles. This also means some 3rd party toy boxes are going to run like dogs, if they run at all.

I'm hoping this is one those situations where Apple begin cautiously then relax the rules, cos right now, the limits are too low.

As for an ATV5, unless they greatly bump the system RAM, I'm not sure I'd have much reason to upgrade. As a TV streamer/media device, the ATV4 is fine as-is (4K would be a plus of course, but not a necessity just yet). As a console it needs a lot more grunt, and I'm not sure Apple would go that path, so if anything in a years time, I'd be looking to pick up a PS4 or XBox1 for cheap.

Good thorough comparison. I have noticed system RAM maxing out rather quickly while building worlds, but as I have not tried the game on any other system, I wasn't sure if this was the same RAM limit across all platforms (for compatibility) or worse on the ATV. Sounds like the XBox One does much better, though it is clearly a more powerful system so that's not surprising. Has anyone compared to an Xbox 360? I would expect the ATV to do better than that one. The 360 only has 512 MB of RAM. The ATV has been touted as in between those two systems in terms of horsepower.

The other issue may be software optimization. This is a complex game to be releasing this close to the debut of the hardware. The OS wasn't in top shape when the ATV released, so I believe development time for this game was really squeezed. There may be a lot of room to optimize in future updates and add the missing content. Hopefully they will, then perhaps they'll advertise it at an equal level to the other platforms.

In the meantime, my 7 year old is just fine with the gameplay.

I can't speak for the previous gen consoles, but I've seen comments about the Wii U version that suggest it is limited in ways similar to the ATV. The 360 has the advantage that games have a much clearer knowledge of exactly how much RAM they have, where iOS/tvOS like to withdraw RAM on a whim, leaving app developers to deal with situations where available memory may unexpectedly drop to rather restrictive levels.

I'd like to think so, but there isn't much clear blue sky between tvOS, and iOS, so in terms of code optimization, this is probably a decent stab. It's obvious from the moment the game starts that this was a pretty hasty port of the iOS version, so there may be options to explicitly tune parts of the ATV version to that device. The iOS version needs to support a number of differing specifications, so may take a lowest common denominator approach at non-critical junctures, where the ATV version could make more aggressive choices. I wouldn't expect huge gains though.

Disney have just made plenty of money from me, and hopefully there's enough other people out there that pick up Infinity and at least one extra playset to justify ongoing development for them. It's exiting to see the ATV get a tier one title so early on.

In the meantime, my 7 year old is just fine with the gameplay.

Which is the main thing after all.

Thanks.

The great deals with AT&T are only for NEW customers.

They do measure (in my area at least) in bps (BITS per second). I have 1.2Mbps, unlimited.

If I were to "switch" to UVerse my speeds would go up, but there is a cap around here of 250Gig. My rates would be low only for the first year then skyrocket up.

I'm finding 1.2Mbps to be fine when playing online games on XBox and PS (I think they recommend at least 1.0Mbps). Streaming Netflix and Hulu on consoles is fine also (it throttles the quality down but seems to still render the video nicely).

It seems that the problem is with the ATV4. It seems to want to stream video only at 1080p (constant stop/loading on this box).

I didn't think I would mind as I bought it for the apps/games, but now the games "stream" as well.

If it wasn't for one of my most favorite games on it, "Battle Supremacy: Evolution", I would've taken it back...

I guess with Apple, if you can afford their product...

Is there a way to simply purchase the base for ATV4? I have a base for the XBox One and don't want to repurchase an entire starter set.

Has anyone played Disney Infinity on AppleTV and on PS4/XBox?

I'm just wondering it theres any major different. In my head (correct me if I'm wrong) but I imaged the ATV version a stripped down version of the game.

I just recently purchased Marvel Battlegrounds. Looked pretty cool, anyways I contacted Disney Infinity support. They stated to me it is not going to be updated for Marvel Battlegrounds as the Apple TV can't handle 4 player mode. To say the least I am extremely ticked off!

So you can't play Battlegrounds on Apple TV at all or can only play 2 player mode or what? I'm confused.

No, you can't play Marvel Battlegrounds on the Apple TV at all.

Here's a response from a Disney Infinity Moderator:
"The team is currently focusing on the traditional gaming platforms. We are always evaluating and making changes, but there are currently no plans for futher updates to the Apple TV version of the game."

Source: https://infinity.disney.com/communi...13347-the-real-question-on-appletv-still-hope

What really bothers me is this: "no plans for futher updates to the Apple TV version of the game".
After 4 months, Disney is backing out ?

Wow, that's horrible news. Infinity was literally the only reason I chose an Apple TV over the other streaming boxes, and they're going to just let it die on the vine?

Yup, that seems to be the shape of it. The current message is: no further development. That means existing bugs and missing features will remain. New content/characters going forwards will not be supported.

This of course has nothing whatsoever to do with four player support.

Bizarrely, Disney are just about to start selling the ATV version on Amazon.

So is there a compilation of what does work on the ATV?

I'm not sure about Baloo.

Simple answer:

Anything that has a WiFi symbol on the box absolutely wont work. Anything that does not, should work.
