I’ve got a couple of email aliases set up on my main iCloud account. Within iCloud mail settings on the web, it allows you to specify your name and the actual alias address eg: ‘Dave’ then ‘Davesmith@icloud.com

My question is this. When I send an email from the stock mail app, it seems to show the recipient ‘Dave’ rather than the full address. Great.


Is this because it’s picking up the ‘Dave’ name when going via the outgoing mail server?


I’m considering using a third party mail app that doesn’t allow me to specify the display name ‘Dave’ in settings but I’m wondering whether the setup in iCloud will take care of that. I did test it and it DIDNT work, so I'm unsure if this is a limitation of iCloud or the third party app (it's Canary, so I sense the latter)

Canary mail support seems to indicate this is possible: "Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From header in outgoing messages."


Again, thank you for looking at this. That help article refers to the main iCloud account that you set up with app specific passwords. You can update the display name there with ease.

The blocker seems to be with the underlying aliases which can be added, but there's no additional field to specify the Display Name, hence me wondering whether icloud servers would do the trick and apply it

It's likely a limitation of the third party app. It should be the app's responsibility of putting the name in the email header. The outgoing mail server shouldn't be putting the name in.
