Display Price Drop

Sorry if this is a stupid question (I am a Mac newbie), but I am wondering why so many users here claim they'd rather go with a non Apple LCD monitor (Dell, HP, Samsung have all been cited as examples). I do have a Samsung 173P and while I feel it is a very good fit for my PC (good colors, good contrast, fast enough for video display), I am quite disappointed by the complete lack of compatibility with my brand new dual G5.

I personally prefer to have an Apple monitor with my Mac. A quality display for a quality CPU. Many times there is just less inconvenience the way. The last non Apple monitor was a Sony. There needed to be a special connector that was very fragile and could cause problems.

I'm glad for all

the new buyers who will be able to acquire a quality display or CPU for a very good price. But for all those who bought a 20" display before december 14th (if bought after this date you may reclaim the price difference from Apple) it is a very frustrating experience. I have lost almost 1200CHF/ US$1020 on the purchase of two new iMacs and one 20" Cinema Display in the last two (2!) months. CHF 600 (33% of the purchase price) on the 20" display alone.

I could understand a gradual price drop on aging equipment. The new Cinema Displays for instance have only become largely available here in Switzerland since around the end of september 04. I got mine on the 10th of november. One month later, bingo, I loose 33% of my investment.

I called Apple but they are not interested in any arrangement stating that I new the price when I bought the display. Ok, I knew the price (and I knew it was a little overdone) but it didn't say that it would drop by 33% only one month after I purchased !

I used my new 20 in. display for almost 3 months, then they lower the price. I was going to buy a new powerbook, but now since this, I think I'll put it off until the next big jump. Apple soured me on Apples, I'll get over it in a few months, inbetween that time they get nada of my funds.

Yah, heaven forbid Apple would ever lower their prices on a product which has been out for a while. They should just keep their prices the same no matter what and screw giving their customers better deals as technology becomes cheaper...

Just remember that when Apple, or any company for that matter, releases new products, there are always going to be people who get the short end of the stick, whether it's due to price reductions or upgrades - not everyone can win in these situations, and Apple cannot please everyone! A little understanding is required in these situations, but I realize it's difficult when it happens to you, and there is no doubt a momentary feeling of frustration. The key is to be understanding and not complain about it - and I was by no means insinuating that you were complaining, so my apologies if I came across that way - I was only making a point.

Point taken, probably was complaing, hard not to when the display I just bought, dropped around 350 dollars in Yen. I'll go cry in the corner now.

As for the G5 PowerBook, it will not be in consumers' hands for several months yet.

Always hard when prices drop a couple or so months after you buy. And maybe even more so for you in Japan. For you probably saw the price drop and the currency price drop as well.

Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Price drops can always be hard to stomach after you've bought at the more expensive price, but prices do go down, especially in the technology sector. If I bought all my Apple stuff now (my first Apple product was my PowerBook in September 2003), I would have saved several hundred pounds and have a slightly more powerful machine, but I would have missed the enjoyment and usefulness of having those products for the year and a quater I have had them. Even AirPort Express is cheaper now than when I got it, 5 months ago.

That's what places like MacRumors are for - to try to help you decide when is the best time to buy. It helped me by ensuring I got a PowerBook just after the update (Sept '03 update) but I could afford to wait.

Same thing goes with everything. We paid £120 for a DVD player a few years ago - now you can get them for £25. Likewise, you could buy that 102" TV now for several thousands of pounds or dollars, or get it for around £100 in 5 years' time.
