Unfortunately, people here are actually embracing the 'notch' - like if a smartphone doesn't have a notch, it sucks. This is why people don't respect Apple fans.

Since when does obscuring part of screen is selling point?! Does that mean all prior iPhones were inferior because they didn't have this 'beautiful notch' or can someone please admit it is a compromise and the ideal solution is no notch?

Dozens of people (many of them professionals [in the tech industry] - myself included), have said it's a compromise, yet I continue to see people conflate "embracing the notch" with "it's an ideal solution" as if everyone believes that. :) I think there's a significant number of people that mean, it's an interesting/effective/clever implementation _in_the_context_ of the current technology that requires there to be non-display area to house the various cams/sensors/projectors. ;)

These ratings are so dumb. Every time a new phone comes out then it tops the ratings. And who actually cares other than fanboys who troll comments sections? All flagship phones these days have great displays and good cameras. Whether one gets a 98 vs a 97 or an A+ vs an A does it matter?

I’m always amused at Samsung’s incredibly accurate displays that are set by default at very inaccurate settings. It was very telling watching family shoot video over the holidays. Red in real life becomes more like vivid orange on the screen.

I think everyone already knew this was going to happen. Samsung has had the best panel for years. Nothing really changed with the X which is a Samsung panel from last year. The S9 is Sammy's latest panel so of course it's going to be it's best.

One must wonder how much Samsung learns from manufacturing Apple Spec Displays. Another good reason to help LG rise to the challenge. :apple:

If you compare both phones on DisplayMate, it’s about as close as you get. The iPhone X DESTROYS the S9 on manual brightness, which is important to me since I won’t use auto brightness. I’d say the S9 has 10 points and the iPhone X has 9.5 haha. The iPhone X did also get an A+ rating.

To be fair, they used this exact phrase to describe the iPhone X.

Which begs the question how much closer to perfect can "visually indistinguishable from perfect" be?

Look how stupid the S9 looks next to the iPhone X with those disgusting bezels.

To be fair, the S9 doesn't have that much more bezel than the X.

It's also not accurate for people to claim the X doesn't have any bezel, as it still has a fairly thick black border around the entire phone. In fact, the side bezels have remained more or less the same thickness in relation to past models, it's just that the head and chin have been slimmed down.

I just dislike having to choose between either a notch or curved sides now.

How about side reflections of that infinity display? It took me 2 seconds to realise that this "tech" is a gimmick when it first showed on Galaxy device. Demo store reflections were all over the sides of the phone. I do not see this issue ever get solved unless Samsung goes back to regular plain display.

Samsung pushes us "infinity", while Apple gives us "the notch". I hope both will follow footsteps of curved TVs.

Because LG won't "learn from manufacturing Apple Spec Displays"?

Or because LG doesn't make their own branded cell phones?

One doesn't solve an implied problem of IP theft by sharing the IP with other companies that also compete in the very same way. That is at least as likely to make another monster.

They probably would not be able to tell the differences when held in front of them (without being able to see the brand)...
You have audiophiles, who are able to hear things that aren't actually there, and now we have Videophiles, who can see the invisible.

But does it really matter though? I have had my fair share AMOLED screens w/ Samsung and never really cared to boast about their brightness specs. I also owned the iPhone X for a bit too and never cared to brag about the OLED exact specs either.

Either way, both phones will have amazing screens. OS matters more than nits or any other screen metrics. Either you want something basic and that updates frequently or you want something with more features and customization w/ the expense of software updates or software longevity.

...and vanish.

FWIW, I’m not too keen on any OLED panel. Samsung’s displays are usually too saturated and the iPhone X, while having better colour calibration, isn’t as restful on my eyes as the lcd’s. I have the X and I find the oled screen still a bit too ‘stark’ for my liking even compared to my LCD iPhone. The screen I’m happiest with is the lcd panel in the iPad Pro 10.5 where the TrueTone setting makes all the difference (even though the X has this feature too). I also, weirdly, quite like the Apple Watch OLED display - go figure!

Next time, though the X is a great all round phone, I’m tempted to go back to an LCD version depending on what Apple leave out of it compared to the premium versions.

I would trust these reviews more if they tested a phone purchased as a normal consumer, rather than it being a review unit

You can never tell if the review is a true experience of what a user might see as opposed to what the supplier wants seen

In this case is the display naturally that good, or was it tweaked by Samsung prior to sending to displaymate for review

Apple could bring out two tin cans and a piece of string and folks, will buy it for “that logo”. And pay good!

And no matter what. Those Apple shares will keep soaring despite this evidence. And always will. That’s how impressive the Apple ecosystem is. Normal rules of business never apply here.

Despite Samsung always being a year ahead and the better value. Even they have “done an Apple”this year too by not exactly setting the world alight this time around. But they too are being caught up by other Chinese Android Phone manufacturers charging a lot less and for more features.

Without that same buffer of an Apple OS to keep the customers loyal regardless, they are pressured to bring out stuff two steps ahead as the enlightened are realising you don’t need to spend £50 a month to have the latest innovations.

The other guys are doing cheaper, better and faster kit for half of that outlay. Owning a Huawei or a OnePlus no longer has a bit of stigma like it did even just a year ago. And that’s a good thing for all (well most) of us. Competition is a healthy thing.

Some people try to get off Apple and reality syncs in that the OS is the most important part of these phones. You won't get a iOS experience on Android and vice versa.

But, but, but it doesn't tell you when you have a new memory with a picture for your new Sims-like album designed and controlled by Apple!

This. I have a iPhone 8 and I have to admit the display is much easier on my eyes than my S8.
