As I recall, only the 2010 MBP supports sound via a mini-display port -> HDMI. I bought a generic Display Port -> HDMI adapter & HDMI cable off Amazon.com, and have had no issues.

Yes, this is your problem. Here are the models that support audio over mDP.
You can find adaptors that will take video from the mDP and combine it with your optical out audio and route the whole thing to HDMI. Several different companies make them. Here's one by Kanex.
