First off, I want to thank you for the genuinely refreshing post.

I feel very similar to the way that you do, and frankly use my Apple gear in a way that does _not_ draw attention to the brand.

I'm almost embarrassed to be associated with such immature dolts.

That said, while I'm not going to let that stop me from using what I want, it has influenced my feelings about Apple. On one hand I like Apple's computers, and to a lesser degree, the iPhones.

On the other, I strongly despise the culture of immaturity, ego mania, and fanboys that act superior. They emulate Uncle Steve, and his never ending, and very successful efforts to create a cult like following.

Something he has done better than Gerry Garcia did, as he fostered the "Dead Heads". Hippies wandering around in a drug induced stupor. Attending every concert the way fanboys attend keynotes.

Gasping in sheer wonderment, at Steve's every word, proclamation, and opinion, these poor souls will truly be in dire straights as he moves away from Apple at some point.

Just what will happen to them, is of serious concern to those who have the ability to function on their own.

Without Steve, where will they vent their unresolved anger? The rage? The need to judge and act the fool? Apple forums will no longer be their outlet.

My what an interesting experience it will be, to sit back and watch. :)

The problem isn't the people using the phone, it's people like you and the OP spending too much time analyzing the people using the phone. How exactly do you use your "gear' in a way that doesn't draw attention to the brand? The last time I checked, you put a phone to your ear and speak or listen. Do you only use your phone in private to keep someone you've never met from developing some kind of inaccurate perception of you? Get over yourself. Stop spending so much time analyzing the behavior of others and judging them -- after all, that's exactly what you don't want others to do to you, isn't it?

Prime example of someone who sleeps with his iPhone on the pillow next to him.;)

Go get a couple of Campbell's Soup cans & some string...

You'll feel better about yourself.

I think my biggest problem with the whole "cult yuppie social status" thing is that a lot of the people who are using iPhones, iMacs, iPods, etc. are the same people that talked crap on Apple just a few years ago before this iPhone thing blew up.

For years I've had people tell me that they can play PC games and I can't, or try to poke fun at me because I'm some sort of Apple nerd. I've been using Apple products since I've owned computers. I buy them not because they're "cool," but because they just make sense for me and they're good products that last a long time for me without much maintenance or hassle.

I was in a lecture hall once and when the lights dimmed for a presentation, all you could see were the glowing Apple logos lighting up the audience, with all of those people using their laptops to take notes. Half of me wanted to gag because I'm sure a lot of those people fall into this yuppie group we speak of, but the other half wanted me to start clapping and feel proud that those people FINALLY figured out that Apple is the way to go!

Okay, so she wasn't that in to you. If she were, she wouldn't be staring at the phone. Sorry dude.

Also, people who think they are hot stuff because they have an IPHONE need to get a life. Seriously.

When I got my 3gs, iPhones were not yet very common here. I felt embarrassed about my iPhone...yes, EMBARRASSED, because I didn't want anyone to think I was a rich prick. The only way I could justify the cost was because I got a nice fan discount that made the bill just slightly higher than the old dumb phone I had.

Now that practically everyone I see has some sort of iPhone/android/blackberry type thing I don't feel weird about having it out.

I admit that I was a formerly proud owner of the first iPhone (2G) but have disliked the gradually cultish nature of iPhone users over the years. I have met a lot of iPhone users nowadays and strangely enough, a lot of them express a particular self-absorption and lack of interest in the well-being of others for some odd reason.

I know that there isn't a scientific reason/explanation for a device affecting the personality of the iPhone owners or the culture of them as a group, but how can such a device have an impact on the lifestyles of these people. So my question is why are such people who are iPhone users tend to be ego-obsessed, yuppie-like, megacapitalist, arrogant, etc. etc. blah blah?

Case in point: I was on a recent date with lady who owned an iPhone and she couldn't keep her eyes off her iPhone all the time. After all, I would be hoping that I would have a word in straightedgewise once in awhile...?

(Btw, I myself am mostly a Palm Pre Plus and Android user mostly. I do use an iPad and iPhone for my art studio work so I am probably guilty of some of these qualities too?)

Anyways, regardless of political orientation, what is the sociological explanation for the cult yuppish nature and type A personalities of the iPhone owners? Feel free to flame on, but I'm actually interested in reasoned explanations of this mystery. :apple::confused:

honestly get a life. who are you to talk about what the average iPhone user is like?

that's as equally ridiculous as saying due to your location being salt lake city, you must spend all your time at the tabernacle and have 10 wives on the go

a gross generalisation

Summary of most of the responses posted:

iPhone users aren't self-absorbed status seeking jerks! You're just too unhip and unattractive to women!

Whoa, before this gets out of control, keep in mind that each is entitled to his own opinion. This type of thread isn't, by any means, meant to be taken as factual.

People judge people. Get cut off in traffic by a BMW, and then by someone in a beat-up old car. You're bound to have a different opinion the second time around.

If you're so offended by this thread, don't waste so much time on here?

That pretty much sums up everyone I know who has a mobile phone of any kind; they just can't stop fiddling with the bloody things

Same here, well sometimes anyway. It's annoying and even more so because I currently have the cheapest Nokia you can get, the 1208. :D

WeegieMac is from Glasgow. Suffice it to say that the place has a certain edge to it...

Instead of blaming a device for your ruined date, perhaps you should consider your ugly face as the real problem????

its true i just finished working for apple and the iphone is just another 'cool' thing to have. half of the people that have one dont even know how to use them - they dont even know the name of the product - they STILL come in asking for the 'touch phone' or the 'iphone 4g' or the 'ipod phone' haha fools if your about to spend £512 on a ****in phone it might be worth researching into it. i still think apple retail need to role out a ****in 1-10 questionnaire before selling a customer an iphone aswell. it is a fashion statement to have an iphone now though - the store i worked in started stocking iphone cases and ipod cases and ipad cases that are branded like paul smith, juicy couture and other **** brands that people buy cause they have more money than sense.

apple arent what they use to be about.

...apple arent what they use to be about.
What did they used to be about? As far as I can tell, Apple has always been about: Taking the latest tech, making it accessible to average consumers, stripping away intimidatory factors such as over-complexity, allied to great industrial and aesthetic design, whilst still preserving all the power you need 'under the hood'.

Just because she found her phone to be more interesting than you I don't think you should be generalizing it to everyone that uses apple products. Even if she had a regular dumb phone if you were so boring she might have been looking at that too. But at the same time she must have been really rude to do that. Wish you better luck with some other date.

Yes, the question is now whether the iPhone is the computer hacker's tool of choice? Android I suspect has taken it to the next level honestly. My Evo is awesome and if it weren't for the art world apps and photography shebang, I honestly may have been using Android full time.
