Buy a refurb Mac Pro for 1800

This is what I did immediately after the event. Even called before the site went back up. Went top of the line refurbished 3.4 i7 27" 256gb ssd. Should be here by Friday. Screw waiting 2 months for a first gen device. There WILL be heat issues in the new machine, mark my words.

I want a 2011 21.5" i7, can't find one. The one on the refurb store got snatched up quick

When will the refurbished (21.5") iMacs drop in price? They're about 20-30% off MSRP of the previous model at the moment.

Are you sure that the prices of refurbished Macs go down when it's a previous series? At least on the Italian store it doesn't look like that, the savings are always given against the original introductory price of that model.

not disappointed, just have to choose carefully?

Apple store Italy cancelled my order this morning which I had in the pipeline for the 2011 27" iMac BTO - prodotto non disponibile -

probably the best bang for the Euro that I can squeeze out of the Apple refresh at the moment is Base Mac Mini 2.5GHz Dual Core i5 (turbo to 3.1Ghz) 4GB/500GB education store price €610 with an Amazon.co.uk (free delivery to Italy) Dell U2711 Ultrasharp 27" also about €610, needs a mini-display port to display port cable. Has FW800 and the mini is fairly easy to upgrade RAM and eventually SDD/HDD, maybe a 750GB Momentus XT? . Would need external speakers and a USB web camera. isn't anoxerically thin. Mini can be taken on holiday or moved to living room as a HDMI media player.

so I'd have a decent upgrade over my home 20" iMac 8,1 2.4GHz C2D 6GB/1500GB for €1250 instead of the €2000+ of the 27" sleek new nice iMac.

any problems foreseen by this system??

I thought about that myself but I'd rather go with the anorexic iMac and get a quad core i5 than a dual core i5 (and built-in webcam, as silly as it may sound, but I have enough USB things around already), but you have a point about easier accessibility. Is the HDD replacement on Mac Minis allowed under warranty, or is the kind of thing that you can do but shouldn't be doing?
You can get the adapter essentially for free if you get the screen from Amazon.it: it currently retails for €594, shipping included (here is the link).

In any case, I'm amazed that they cancelled your order. So if you want an iMac today you have to scavenge around third-party shops, such as MediaWorld or Saturn. I wonder if they'll lower the prices at all...

I'm in the same boat! I just want a 21.5" but I'm pretty sure I'd want 16 gig ram in the future. Confused now whether I should buy a refurb or buy a new one and pay the apple premium for ram.

I guess I'll wait and check it out in the store. I'm pretty sure the display will sway me to the new one! Oh and USB 3.0 of course!

Heat issues? Wtf, do you keep your face pressed on the glass? It's on your desktop.

I expect panel discolouration after a year or so of heavy use - my C2D iMac had dark patches after less than a year of regular video encoding almost everyday.

I'm going for a base mini and 3x Dell U2312HM monitors (3 for Eyefinity use on my pc and the mini on just 2 of them) and then try to move my regular workflow over to my PC permanently.

So...
Base mini = £499 + 3x £165 for the monitors = £994 = less than iMac.

Screen blotches / discolouration - both my 2009 iMac and 2011 iMac have had new screens due to the issue as have two iMacs at my work. Many believe it's the heat causing it but Apple have always refused to acknowledge it (understandable as it would also then make them liable for a recall). Tellingly when I took my 2011 iMac in at the beginning of this week the Genius didn't even bother switching it on to check, just booked it straight in for new screen and backlight.

Hopefully this iMac revision may have resolved the issue (but don't count on it), my advice would be to take out Applecare.

Buy old PowerMac G5

Buy one (or more) Cinema Displays

Buy latest and greatest processor and graphics. Couple with a fully hackintosh-compatible mobo. Extremely easily upgraded when you need it. Cheap. Reliable.

If you can live with the "clutter" that is the PowerMac G5 (I can - It is after all the most beautiful desktop tower). Piece of cake.

Disclaimer: I only write this to shut up all those: "Apple owes me something"-attitude posts. No they don't. If you don't like what they're doing, you've actually got plenty of possibilities. Mini for the consumer, hackintosh for the pro and so forth.

Like many here I have been waiting for the new iMac update. I am quite disappointed with all the hype about this new "thin" design, among other things like specs. I truly believe the new iMac base model should have come with AT LEAST a SSD + AT LEAST 1GB of video ram.

If that happened, then your post this morning would have said, "ZOMG, new iMac too expensive!".

How slow is mac mini compared to imac? 20%?

Lost in the waiting game :-(

Prices in Denmark have also increased - approximately 18% on the base model.

And what do I get for the extra money? USB3 and more processing power I guess. But I lost FireWire and optical drive which I need. I know I can get adapters and external optical drive for even more expenses and desktop clutter :-( The design looks cool, but if my top priority was a thin computer I would go for a laptop.

Hoped to get SSD for the extra money, but no - and we don't even know what they're gonna charge extra for that.

Worst thing is that it seems impossible to get the 2011 model in Denmark now :-( All shops reports sold out and apple don't offer refurbished iMacs here. My only option is to buy a used one without the regular consumer rights we have here (like 2 years warranty).

So disappointed and feel like I lost big time in the waiting game. Shame on you apple.

About that, depends if graphics performance is important, then the iMac is a lot ahead of the mini.

The limiting factor on the new iMac is really the 5400rpm drive, the old one had a full size 7200, and I don't want to recapture video etc due to dropped frames caused by the slow "taking the mickey" hard disk.

I might try to get a 2011 21" model now (although everywhere local is out of stock)- then I can have Snow Leopard for another 4 years.

Is the hard drive changable to ssd on the new mac mini? Does anyone know if I can install ssd on the new macbook pro 13 not retina?

Mini is fairly easy to change out, 13" pro is a standard 2.5" drive but the retina is a custom design so OWC or another 3rd party might make one.

The iMac however depends on how the display is attached, the leaked pictures from the other week show a clearly visible drive, BUT what if apple have glued the display on to the case?

We lost for running across your post.

Everyone can go buy a PC if you aren't happy with what Apple has released. You're wasting energy and hard disk space for the forum by posting a bunch of whiny BS....you live in America, you could be living in a third world country....perspective is everything.

The 2011 iMacs are really great machines. The memory is easy to upgrade, they have firewire and an ODD, and you can run Snow Leopard through Mountain Lion as your OS.

The new screen is enticing, but I found a solution that works for me. Now I just need to decide which refurb I want. I'm tempted to wait for an i7 to show up, but I like the price on the i5 machines.

I have several reasons for buying a Mac rather than a PC: Far better OS, less noisy computer, better build quality, not having to deal with incompatible hardware/software, no hardware-microsoft blame game, all-in-one that just works and so on... It seemed like the iMac was the perfect match until they "upgraded" it (and the price) and even prevented me from buying last years model.

That's why I'm disappointed and simple don't see the point of Apples secrecy. If I had known what the 2012 iMac would bring I could have made an informed choice of either buying the 2011 while it was available or waited for the 2012 if I felt that matched my needs better. Either way apple would have got my money. Now they most likely won't.

When I choose to waste "precious hard disk space" by writing here it's with the very faint hope that if enough people will express their oppinion apple might listen to the voice of the customer and change their policy. At least chances are bigger than if I don't.

... And I thought America WAS a third world country? ;-)
