I have recntly been dignosed with severe Diverticulosis-
http://www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/diverticulosis_and_diverticulitis.jsp

I have had 7-10 episodes of Diverticulitis over the past 2-3 yaers but it was never diagnosed and passed after two or three days of discomfort. Two months ago I had an episode that hospitalized me for 10 days and the Diverticulitis was finally diagnosed.

Yesterday I went through a colonoscopy to see the extent of the damage this has caused my colon and the innitial news is not promising. One thing I know is there will be some surgery in my near future that will consist of the removal of part of my colon:( I have another test this Friday to find out how much.

Being so young (35) this has caused some alarm to my surgeon and he had requested for me to do the tests. It turns out that I have a twist in my colon which has caused occasional blockage which in result had put strain on a section of my colon causing the Diverticulosis.

I am searching fo any other people who have been diagnosed with this and their experience in the treatment, preferrably the "extreme" version.

Diverticulosis is apparently very common and by the age of 50 20-50% of all people will have this. by the age of 90 the ratio is almost 100%. Most people will never have a serious issue with this but some do as in my case.

Of course this news has freaked me out. I am not affraid of the surgery but instead afriad of what my life will be like post-op. I am expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

Best case scenario will be an invasive surgery to remove several inches, a month or two of recovery and then continue on my life relitively normally. worst case scenario can be found on the link provided above.

Experienced support will be helpfull.
[doublepost=1523764253][/doublepost]I know this is an old thread but did you ever have bad back pain. I have had severe diverticulitis 5 months ago, haven't felt right since . Very bad back pain and bladder discomfort.

[doublepost=1546373583][/doublepost]I have been miserable for 3 months with diverticulitis and have always eaten a lot of fiber and yogurt for probiotics. So fiber did not prevent it. Terrible cramps and loose bowel movements. Every friggen morning. Couldn't leave the house till it stopped. I started drinking a cup of Miso soup in the mornings and it was almost instant relief. Used the white Miso paste and tastes really good. The probiotics in the Miso is much better than whats in yogurt.

Thanks for the Miso paste suggestion. I like Miso soup so I'll certainly give it a try.

Starting a new thread isn't needed. Simply post your questions here on this thread.

If you did start a new thread, it would likely be merged with this one anyway, so there'd still only be this one thread.

Before asking questions, though, please read through this thread. It may be old (started 2006), but there's probably still a lot of good info here. Be sure to ignore anything that mentions using leeches for removing "ill humours". :)

I was diagnosed with diverticulosis about 10 years ago, but suffer no symptoms from it. “Isis” is the infected version if I remember correctly.

Rule number one... Do not again, for the rest of your life, eat nuts or seeds of any kind. Watch for them when you eat out.

I'm a former sufferer, and it has has been years since I have had an attack, just by following that simple rule. Good luck. A2

I was diagnosed with diverticulosis in 2018. I suffered in pain for almost two weeks before I had to go to the ER. After they did a CT Scan, I was diagnosed. I went to a specialist and he performed a colonoscopy and removed 9 pulips. A few days ago 3/2021 I ate too many cooked mushrooms and this triggered severe pain in my colon. Because of COVID I was afraid to go to the ER again and suffered in bed for 3 days. I did a lot of reading and foods like cabbage, corn, mushrooms, and Kale can trigger my pain. I just joined this forum to hear everyone’s stories and what else I need to avoid. After doing a lot of reading, they can’t really pinpoint what can trigger an episode. Thank goodness I feel a lot better today. For the most part in the past few years, I’ve only had a few bad episodes! I’m terrified to have surgery, and don’t know what to do. I hope you’re feeling better!!

I had the surgery laparoscopically, was far less intense than a stay in the hospital from a diverticulitis infection. 15 years since that post and surgery, I haven’t had any issues since. Highly recommend but I can only speak from my own experience. Had about 10” of my sigmoid colon removed.

I had an asymptomatic Meckel's Diverticulum that was discovered when I went into the ER for an appendicitis. Both were taken care of during surgery. Other than that, nothing to report.

I have had occasional bouts with food I eaten. Worst one was with the Honey Walnut Shrimp at Panda Express, I didn't realize they cook and serve the shrimp with the shells still on. A piece of shell must have been the culprit. I was in pain for a week. In the past I would mild attacks after popcorn with the sharp shells. I have learned to stay away from Panda Express and popcorn. I am over due for a colonoscopy, I was supposed to get one at the beginning of 2020, but Covid stopped me. Now I will reschedule and find out whats going on. Thanks guys for all you input on your experiences.

I went to a private hospital with a pain on my left groin that spread down to my left thigh, I thought it was a hernia as I had an event where I overstretched and felt a ripping feeling in my groin.
I had a CT scan that diagnosed a mass on my bowel and had also had a psoas abscess.
The private hospital could not deal with my case as the consultant said I required the input of a multidisciplinary team from the NHS. I previously had an ultrasound where the doctor reckoned I had a hernia that was higher up than than an Inguinal hernia and said he would normally see this in a patient that had severe trauma like a car accident He advised the CT scan.

I was told to report to the NHS hot clinic the next morning where I had a CT guided drain inserted in my groin.
I was fitted with a temporary appliance bag on my left groin.
Two days later I had a swelling at the site of the drain that was spreading to my stomach and testicles it turned out I also had cellulitis
I went to A&E and was taken in for an emergency operation to drain the infection,
I got out four days later with a new drain in place.
The drain was collecting faecal material and infection that continued for a few weeks and then appeared to be drying up. I had the drain removed and was left with an open wound draining in to a swab being changed every two days.
I then went down to using tissues as there was little coming from the wound but on one occasion I stood up and the poison shot out of the wound on to the floor.

I contacted the consultant who arranged for me to get surgery and within a couple of days
I was admitted to hospital where I had a bowel resection and spent four days in intensive care. And a total of eight nights over COVID Christmas.

My notes state I had sepsis and Ecoli I also had a fistula and a perforation on my sigmoid colon along with a GI infection and two other infections I can’t even remember the name.
My point of this post is that I really did not feel unwell apart from a couple of bouts of shivers and a mild pain in my groin that I had ignored for a while.

I have now recovered and I am feeling fairly healthy and very lucky that the consultant diagnosed this condition although I have a four inch scar on my left groin and a scar from my breast bone to my pubic bone I would advise anyone with groin pain to get it investigated quickly to avoid any complication.
The hardest part of the recovery has been psychological as I really did not know that I had a serious problem.

Hey there, I came across this old thread from 2006 and wanted to share an update on my journey with severe Diverticulosis. Since then, I've been working closely with my healthcare team and exploring different approaches to manage the condition. Lifestyle changes like a balanced diet and staying active have made a real difference for me. I'm curious to hear from others who have dealt with Diverticulosis—what strategies have worked for you recently?
I was diagnosed with “isis” almost 10 years ago, not the infected version, no side effects. I’ve made no changes in my diet and have had 2 more colonostopies since then. There is some discussion about this in the following link, but I don’t remember how much was said about “osis”. You can search within the thread.

I don't have it, but my mother did in her 50s and 60s. She's 83 now, and it stopped bothering her about 5 years ago.
