Unfortunately I've had to put 7.7 back on - rolling back to 7.5.5 had broken Safari and iTunes. When I do a fresh install will be sticking to the older version though.
I wonder how many other apps and UI features are held back a little by 7.7?
Well at least we know what was causing the slowdown.
I notice iTunes requires QT 7.6 or better, maybe there is a sweet spot, something less then 7.7.

I got a new Quicksilver that I'm playing with and geekbench is such a terrible benchmark that I was looking for alternatives. I found this thread and tried it out. There seem to be a bunch of variables to running it, but enough people have participated with the same settings to make some comparisons possible. This result was with Quicktime 7.6.4 (the latest for OS X 10.4.11?):

I ran it twice and got the same number. Try that with geekbench. Anyway, would anyone be interested in also doing a browser version of the "DIY benchmark" of some sort? This would have a lot of variables in terms of software setup, but should also allow comparison with a wide variety of hardware from old to new.
