For those who say AOD has a detrimental effect on battery, what do you mean?
I have S7 and it's my first watch, bought about 21 months ago, so maybe it's still too early for me to see some really negative effect. My battery health seems awful (85%) but I still get more than 24 hours for now

It uses more battery power to have the screen on rather than off. That in turn puts more "life" on the battery, which has a limited life.

I have an AWU, and intentionally turn off AOD. I can't understand the need to have the screen illuminated when not looking at it. I bought the watch for me, not other people.

Couple that with potential burn in issues and some colours (reds) degrading faster than others on an OLED screen, I'd rather not go down that rabbit hole.

I am guessing the vast majority of folks leave on the AOD. It is kind of like the AOD on the iPhone pro models. Kind of sort of like ok it is kind of nice not raising your wrist for a quick glance at the time

Can you point to data, eg posts here on MR that show that people actually have burn in issues etc that you cite above? I haven’t seen any, maybe there are some but it sure is not a widespread issue - so hope you enjoy your rabbit hole and don’t get lonely.

And for “I can’t understand the need” or others saying “it’s mind boggling that people want to use AOD” - that is just plain, excuse me, dumb. I’ve had S0/3/4 for almost 6 years and now with S7 and Ultra, I would never go back and not use AOD. It’s a technology and feature and luckily we have the option to turn it on/off.
And AOD is now available on iPhone, and personally I don’t think I’d ever use it, but others I’m sure do use it and that’s ok and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, it's a simple google search away. I don't know why you're so surprised that an OLED screen has burn-in issues when a persistent image is left on screen....that's been a known issue of OLED for a long time - as is some colours degrading faster than others. I have a pretty expensive LG OLED TV with screen burn in despite not ever leaving a persistent image on screen. I have pixel shift enabled and run pixel refresher once per month. Currently going through customer services for a green blob in the middle of the screen....exactly where the red pixels are used most when people's faces are in the centre of the screen. I'm not holding out much hope as it's a known limitation of OLED 🤷‍♂️

Each to their own.

No right or wrong on this.

I use AOD, but have turned off wake on wrist raise.

Oddly, if I enable wake on wrist raise, I turn off AOD.

Just me though, we are all different.

Would cycling watch faces weekly and turning off AOD at night mitigate this?

AOD = on. Wake on wrist raise = off. Tap/turn crown to wake = on. I find that is the best combination of functionality and battery life for me and my Ultra lasts around 2 days between charges.

I’ve used AOD ever since it was introduced with the S5. I see a ton of of Apple Watches when I’m out and about, but I never really take notice if they have AOD on or not.
