When the phone is locked, the sensor doesn't really have a point.

When it's unlocked, it does - it is what tells the scanner to start reading when you set your finger on the home button to authenticate an iTunes purchase.

It doesn't have to, might not be... In the same way the software tells the keyboard to pop up for password entry, it could tell the scanner to come on when the touchid is requested within the App Store.

----------

At least two solid reasons have been given yet you keep ignoring them.

The primary one being that it's an additional security measure. If the software triggered the sensor, it would remove the 'human' element from the security measure.

I can use a pencil to press my home button and put my pinkie I'm, without ever touching any part of the metal ring and it still unlocks.

Useful description, thanks.

Question: what's the best (ie fastest and guaranteed) way now to activate the camera-and-photos only sandbox mode?

I'm guessing you get slide to unlock very briefly when you use the home button with TouchID, if you swipe up from the right corner (where the camera in control center is, where the camera in the lock screen is).

But I wonder if Touch ID is fast enough that it could ignore your attempt at accessing something on the slide-to-unlock screen, and leave you at control center (confusion and one more screen tap) or have you scrolling a recent web page (more confusion, home button press, then having to navigate to the camera app).

I have only seen Touch ID in action once... didn't get the chance to ask about this.

Hopefully they have this figured out... maybe they need to move the shortcut to the power button and shortcut to top of the screen.

What you describe is a non-issue in practice. If you want the lock screen to appear after pressing the home button, you just press the home button and take your thumb off the button. The lock screen will appear and then you can take whatever action you desire.

Ok, I guess I'll go through it with you again since you are too lazy to read a few pages back.

How could a dead finger push the home button? Since that is required... My point is that the full functionality is not in this version of ios. Something was changed between the keynote and the release of the phone.

Once again, it seems you know exactly how the device works!! Are you one of the engineers who designed the touch ID sensor? If so, please enlighten all of us on the specifics of the sensor, in micron's please.

And guess what, using it to make an iTunes purchase does not require clicking the home button. You could also click the power button and then use the Touch ID to unlock the phone. The physical buttons are used to power on the screen to save battery from what I've gathered.

Please inform me what else Apple has planned this year and what they are going to do wrong. I'm sure they are watching your every post.

And with this, the thread should be closed. You have described exactly how Touch ID functions.

Just so tired of reading these "enthusiast" forums and it's full of entitled cry babies who never in a million years could do what Apple's engineering team does.

Never once said I could design anything, I'm perfectly ****ing happy with how it works now, the only thing I said is that I think the functionality was changed between the announcement and the release. Know what the **** you are posting about you *****.

I totally get where people are coming from with wanting to be able to unlock the phone without pressing the button.

I dont understand where all the hate is coming from.

Let me give yo ua direct quote from the keynote:

"....[A]round it is the stainless steel detection ring. So the sensor knows when to read your fingerprint just by the fact that your finger is on the button, you don't even have to click it".

that is DIRECTLY word for word from the keynote presentation. Why are people so mad that someone would expect to not have to pres the button to unlock the phone?

I do think it can be changed with a software update though. Hopefully they do.

So for everyone talking **** on people who think they shouldnt have to press the button and you calling them "lazy" or something, i dont think it has anything to do with being lazy, but rather everything to do with the way apple portrayed the technology when they revealed it.
