I completely agree with you. So what's the point of the metal ring again? lol

Part of the reason that hack is so unlikely is that not only did they need an extremely high resolution image of the fingerprint, they also needed to transfer that fingerprint to a medium that could replicate the properties of human skin in order to make it work

In case it wasn't said above, you don't have to lift said finger from the home button. Just click and leave finger on button. Saves you a second or two each time you unlock phone.

Much faster than pass code, even if you have a simple one.

We need to vote this thread "saddest corner of the Internet today"

Guys. We unlock our phone with our fingerprint! It's amazing technology!

If you aren't impressed, turn it off and move on!

----------

For the record, I hold my finger a few milliseconds before I actually click the home button and I usually never even see the lock screen. It's ridiculously instant.

Ughhh. So tired of people not reading the whole thread. You are missing the point completely.

Shouldn't this thread have died after a few replies?

It works as advertised and intended. If it is to work a different way it will be in a future iPhone release.

What do you guys do when notifications come in? Click home swipe notification then put finger on the scanner?

We were told that the ring around the button would sense when your finger touches it. But that's not true. Either the hardware is not even present or the feature has been disabled.

It DOES sense when your finger touches it, and activates the fingerprint scanner inside the home button. You incorrectly assumed that it would also turn on the screen and unlock your device.

Tip: Don't lift your finger between waking it and scanning. Simply do not let it off the home button after clicking and it'll unlock right away and this is significantly faster than waking it and swiping to unlock that you've been doing all along.

this has probably been mentioned, but if you get a text message, or email, or anything that makes your screen light up, you don't have to press down on the Touch ID sensor. Just rest your finger there and it will unlock.

Makes sense to swipe the text first, though, so it opens directly into the app when you use your fingerprint.

I have this not work a lot of times though. Sometimes it will fail, but sometimes it won't even recognize my finger on there, so I have to take it off and put it back on. A lot of times it works too, but it fails enough that it makes me apprehensive every time I try to unlock the phone.

Try reprogramming your print again. The only time it doesn't work is if I pivot my finger while it's scanning but it's easy to get into the habit of holding still. Maybe it's defective in terms of accuracy? You can try comparing to display models.

I swapped my space gray for a silver one, and it's been about the same, so I don't think it's defective.. I'll have to try reprogramming my fingerprints again.

I like it the way it is. Id rather push a button to unlock it rather then just touch it. It really doesn't take that much energy or effort to push it. Maybe if i'm reaching in my pocket or something and my finger hits it I don't want it to unlock (I know small possibility but still).

It makes you apprehensive? Really?!?

You've got an alternative to get into your phone! It's not like you're going to be locked out forever!

What is the point of that though? If you have to push the home button, why not just have the thing come on when home button is pushed. There is more to it that was changed last minute or will be released in a later firmware

Post #78 for one:
"We were told that the ring around the button would sense when your finger touches it. But that's not true. Either the hardware is not even present or the feature has been disabled."

100% correct. My guess is disabled for now. As cool as it is now, it is going to be even better after future firmware updates.

It surprises me how this piece of technology is still not good enough for some people. God forbid OP we dont want you losing your finger for clicking the button

I can imagine the complaints of people saying "I accidentally touched the home button without pressing and it unlocked my phone..." I personally don't mind the press down while keeping the finger there for an extra half a second. However, that's just my opinion :p

To me, this is what the "silver ring" should be preventing. As it is now it now it really serves 0 purpose.

It does serve a purpose - it detects your finger. It is how it knows to scan your finger print when your phone is already unlocked and you're trying to confirm an iTunes purchase.
