The Development kits that Apple sent out pre-launch were all 32gb units. I just heard Serentity Caldwell talk about her 32gb having over 40 apps installed and she's not even close to filling her storage.

So, I think you're ok either way. Although, if you're not planning on upgrading next year, I'd still get the 64gb just in case. Although, nobody knows exactly why :)

Other then Profits, I wonder what Apple's reason was for creating the 64gb version. Are we missing something? I do not think for a moment that DVR type functions will ever be added. But could they possibly allow me to download all of my pictures and videos from iCloud like I can on the iPad? I mean on my iPhone it they all will not fit they download smaller versions. My iCloud is about 32gb right now. You might say you can simply stream it. But you could say the same with the iPad. Your personal library is something you might look at over and over. Why stream it every time. Anyway, I am sure there are many other examples of things they could use the storage for. Do you think Apple is thinking that maybe people will simply want to install 100's of App's and that is the reason? Seems to me most argue that no way would anybody need 64gb but for some reason Apple is selling it. I think if Apple could make a case for why they are selling 2 versions we might see the point in buying the 64gb version.

The statement about 64Gb performing better is pure speculation. In theory more cache is better but that assumes that:

1. A 32GB unit is full, which is not a given.
2. The Apple TV OS and app code allow and take advantage of the space.

The second is also not a given. For all we know even if you have 20GB free Apple may not allow an app to store more than X-GB in cache or some other number lower. In other words just cause you got 20Gb free doesn't mean your ATV will use it to its full potential anyway.

Lastly their statement is speculation. Until they can back it up with benchmarks, ones that show a good likelihood of creating a perceptive difference, it means nothing.

So, I think you're ok either way. Although, if you're not planning on upgrading next year, I'd still get the 64gb just in case. Although, nobody knows exactly why :)

If you don't know why then save the money, unless you're accustomed and enjoy lighting $50 bills on fire. In which case please private message me for my PayPal address and send it my way instead. Waste not what not or whatever. ;)

Since your TV is just 1080p that means smaller versions of your photos will do. Also, like on the iPhone it can intelligently manage this. Even if Apple lets you cache 10GB or more for faster experience a 32GB unit is more than enough for that and 100+ apps. You're still fine.

so the consensus is that if I only use the ATV4
as a video player 99% of the time, I shoudl be
fine with just 32gb? I don't mind spending the
extra $50, but also don't want to waste it for no
reason at all.

I don't intend to do any gaming... I'm way too
old for such thing. (no offense to those of you
who are not eligible for Medicare or senior
discounts yet)

Save $50 and use them to buy apps or movies ;)

I bought the 64GB and so far have two apps installed LOL. Oh well, its there if I need the space.

I bought 2 64GB ATV4's. Most likely would have been fine with 32GB. Anyone on the fence and tight on cash should probably go for the 32. Can't see myself filling this up unless Apple drastically changes its functionality.

I have the 32 and I'm fine, granted I only have 2 light games on it. I do notice that when watching some live tv apps, I am able to pause and even rewind for about 5 minutes. So it does cache some video feeds onto the hard drive. I was wondering to myself, "If I had a larger drive, would it cache more?" But I'm sure it's restricted by the OS.

I wonder if getting ATV4 in 32gb is pretty much like getting iPhone 6s Plus in 16gb. :)
(should disclose that I only use Android phones... my current ones being the LG G4
and old Galaxy Note 4, each has a 200GB Sandisk MicroSDXC card insdie)

I bought the 32 and I have downloaded approx. 250MB in content. However, I keep reading that it caches video and the 64GB is great for that. Is that really true though? Has anyone noticed it's caching a lot of video?

If true, I'm exchanging my 32gb ATV4 for the 64gb ATV4.

I assume I'll have until January to do it, thanks Best Buy's
holiday extended return period.

It's confusing I know. A lot of people in this thread are describing the Apple TV 4 as if it uses space like a computer. It doesn’t. Apparently they’re not familiar with Apples technology called "App Thinning". Apple addresses this clearly in its developer documentation. It's in a section called Resource Limitations. In a nutshell here's how it works;

Apps downloaded from the App Store have an initial 200 MB size limit.

However, once the initial app has been downloaded (200 MB) something called "prefetched tags" kick in, where up to 2 GB of resources (per app) can be downloaded automatically in the background. If the app requests it, up to 20GB of on-demand iCloud resources can be requested. If you're running out of internal storage for any reason tvOS reserves the right to delete your data. You cannot override this. Developers can even set priority for the apps assets, telling tvOS that some assets should be purged before others if another app requests the space.

Every developer that understands how App Thinning works has told me that they have decided to buy the 64GB version. When MacRumors looked into how space was used in the new Apple TV they said "Apple TV users who plan to play a lot of games or use a lot of resource-heavy apps could potentially find themselves using a large amount of storage, so the 64GB upgrade could be worthwhile." I think that a year from now once people learn more about how App Thinning works, that a lot of them will be buying the 64GB version. I actually think that Apple is keeping people in the dark about this subject, so that they can increase the sales of the ATV later on. They know that people will initially buy the cheaper 32GB version, but then in around a year they will realize it was a mistake, and run out and upgrade to the 64GB version. Apple has now just sold that same person two Apple TV's, and Apple can now honestly say that sales have remained strong.

Because of the app store and a very good developer community, I anticipate that there will be a lot of incredible apps coming to the Apple TV. I know of one developer who is working on a PVR. Imagine all of the cool apps now headed for the new ATV. Because of how App thinning works, and all the new apps headed for the ATV IMO it makes more sense to play it safe and buy the 64GB version now, instead of paying 150.00 now + 200.00 later on. Either way I'm sure the new Apple TV will become a big hit by the time we all look back a year from now.

Should have just made one new model (64gb) and called it the new Apple TV and Tim's customer "sat" would've been in great shape.

I jumped on CNN live today and it had hours of coverage available for me to rewind to. I do not believe the app was active prior to me starting it this afternoon. I have a 64gb ATV4. I am not sure if a 64gb is worth it. I wish Apple would allow me to access my Photos library from my paid iCloud storage.
