Have any of you guys who 'never scratched a screen ever' looked at your screens under a bright light and really scrutinised them?
Microscopic grit on your fingers will leave tiny scratch marks. It isn't just keys and coins you need to be careful with!
Loads of things can scratch glass. Look at your watch crystals, your car windscreens etc.

If you have to look that hard to find damage does it really matter?

Yeah this is true. I didn't have a screen protector on my 4S and I didn't keep it in the same pocket as keys or coins, yet I had those tiny scratches you mentioned. I baby my devices and with my 5S I accidently scratched the screen with my keys, luckily I had a screen protector on.

Those "I never scratch my phone" or "I baby my phone" comments are just silly.

Yes. Get one to avoid scratches and durability. If your keen on selling your 5s for the 6, id get a screen protector

Well call me silly then. I never scratch my phone. But I don't baby it. I just use common sense. It a shame that it's not that common anymore.

I agree. I've never scratched an iPhone screen and I've owned them since 2007. My girlfriend is crazy about scratches and didn't believe me, so she checked my 5s out and was amazed that there weren't even any microscratches on it. I guess we're both silly. :D

If you carry anything metal in the same pocket as your iPhone, it is only a matter of time before you scratch the screen.

I have carried my iPhone 5 for the past couple years without a screen protector. I have tried to be careful about keeping it in a pocket by itself, but have slipped up a few times. I have a couple of scratches, but truth-to-tell, it really doesn't bug me. When the screen is on, you can't see the scratches. So it would only be readily apparent if you are the type of person who likes to stare at an unlit iPhone screen.

Only you can answer the question of will the scratches bother you.

That being said, screen protectors tend to pick up scratches way easier than the uncovered screen. So look at your iPhone with a screen protector. How many scratches do you have? Does it bug you? I suspect without the screen protector, you would probably have 1/4 of the number of scratches.

You could try one of the tempered glass screen protectors now being sold (with which I have no experience) which will be more scratch resistant, and may be less objectionable to you than the typical plastic screen protectors:

Actually no. Coins and knives cannot scratch iPhone's screen. They might scratch the oleophobic coating, but those kind of scratches are barely visible, even in direct sunlight. What can scratch the screen though, is sand (mostly Quartz), which is harder than gorilla glass, and can get inside your pockets.
That being said, I don't think screen protectors are necessary. I've had my iPhone 5 for nearly two years now (without screen protector) and have no scratches on the screen.

I dont really want to use screen protector in my iphone. It only makes the screen look bad. So can you tell if I really need the screen protector. Do the iPhone 4s/5s easily get scratches from a key, pens, coins (and other things which we keep in the pocket). Please tell me

I used to own an iphone 4s and it screen got pretty damaged due to the scratches. At first, I ignored it thinking that they were minute and wont affect my screen but my phone's screen ended up looking battered. That's why I install screen protectors in all of my gadgets with screens, they are cheap and actually protect your screen from external damages. here is the product I use,

You really need to get into the habit of dedicating a pocket to your phone OP as keys will not scratch the screen but it will surely damage the chassis of the phone.

Metal things are very soft and very unlikely to scratch the screen. The phone yes, the screen no.

But your screen will scratch. If someone comes in here saying they have no scratches, it is bs. They have scratches if they don't have a screen protector. Usually a small grain of sand will do it. It isn't the keys or the coins.

Any of those guys that say their screen is perfect and they don't use a screen protector, they need to give me their phone and let me examine it. I guarantee you they have scratches.

Why would anyone keep an expensive, shiny gadget in a pocket along with keys and coins? It baffles me. Not only will the screen get scratched, so too will the metal casing. If you only have one pocket and refuse to purchase more appropriate clothing, then you should purchase a case which protects every area of your phone. Otherwise you're one of those annoying people who just doesn't care about things and shouldn't be allowed to own nice gadgets.

i have an iPhone 5s without any type of screen protector, i dont have any scratches in my device, according to me just you have to simple take care of your device so your device will be scratches free, but if you use your device ruffly you have to fixed the perfect screen protector according to your device

I had a tempered glass on my phone till i dropped it in the parking lot. Picked up the phone and thought it was shattered till i peeled of the tempered glass and the screen was still flawless. Tempered glass is the best for screen protection and usability. $5 saved my phone.

Well I guarantee you I do not. Just because you have issues with scratches doesn't mean everyone does.

I used to be so anal about screen protectors and cases, sometimes spending more on them than the actual cost of the phone. I've changed though and really dislike both of them now.

I've never gotten a scratch on my phone even though I slip up from time to time and do put the phone in the same pocket as change and keys. And if I get a scratch, I really don't care.

The way I look at it, an accessory should give some kind of functionality or do something unique that improves upon the protection or use of your device.

For example, I'm using a matte screen protector to reduce glare and fingerprints.

I've also used a LifeProof Fre, which offers waterproofing.

Sure, these are all going to have drawbacks as well. With the matte screen protector, visibility is reduced somewhat. With the Fre, sound isn't quite as clear.

I'm contradicting myself here, however, since I'm currently using a Speck CandyShell. It doesn't offer anything unique, just really good protection in a somewhat slim profile.

Just my opinion/two cents.

Invisibleshield HD installed day 1 of getting my 5. the protector feels 99% like the screen, doesn't increase glare, easy to clean, and hasn't scratched at all. After almost 2 years, still feels like the first day I got it, and still isn't orange peely, and doesn't absorb greases like the other protectors I've used. You get what you pay for. And for my 6, you're damn right I'll pay 40 dollars for the extra piece of mind. keys, pens, coins, spoons in the pockets? Doesn't matter.

Keys and coins in your pocket will never scratch your iPhone's screen.

The only thing in daily life would do harm to it is sand, which is made of quartz, a material a little harder than Gorilla Glass.

That being said, I never use any screen protector, and the screens never got any scratches.

Oh, the answer is, you REALLY DON'T need a screen protector.

I've always had my screen exposed on my phones, and just make sure the screen is facing the direction opposite keys or any other objects....
