The email I received said this:

Hi xxx,

Congrats on becoming a Dropbox Guru! We've awarded you 3 GB of bonus space for the next 12 months! You now have 58.75 GB of space. Thanks again for supercharging your HTC phone with Dropbox.

Enjoy,
- The Dropbox Team

It's given me 3gb in one go rather than 500mb per 500mb upload so maybe they've changed the T&Cs?

That is a different bonus for HTC phone users. See this.

If you install the OS X beta and upload some photos you will also get the separate 3GB bonus that is permanent. The latest beta is here.

That's a different bonus program. The one being discussed here is for Camera Uploads, which is permanent. The email you get from that would say:
We think it's awesome that you've automatically uploaded photos to Dropbox! You received x GB bonus space with your first camera upload. As you take and upload more, you can earn up to 3 GB total!

Cool! Better get snapping with pictures then I guess! Each picture I take is around 1mb so that's a lot of photos. Is there a deadline to get the 3gb?

You can also do videos. There isn't a set deadline, but as the previous offer expired, this one may, as well. I wouldn't waste time. You can record and sync a single video that's over 2.5 GB and you'll get the 3GB extra space. Then you can delete the video and keep the space.

I have drop box and have no use for it at all and would gladly trade it for apple mail as it was in Snow Leopard. In LION its horrible....at best.
You're just wrong. It works perfectly under Lion on my Air and my Mini, just as it did in Snow Leopard on my old Macbook, on Windows 7 on my work computer... you get the idea.

And as far as Google Drive? It doesn't do delta uploads, doesn't have a functioning iPhone client, has creepy licensing terms. I just don't see the point of it other than free space -- and I'll happily pay a little for a good sync software that works everywhere.
