The Smart Cover from Apple is an Epic Fail.

I bought two iPad 1's immediately upon release and got Apple's case to go with each of them (sold the Wi-Fi only model shortly after getting the 3G one a month later). Apple's case for the iPad 1 is perfect. It's thin, light, has a good texture, sturdy, durable. I never gave a second thought to a case for my iPad 1.

I bought a $70 red leather Smart Cover for my iPad 2. It sucks. It slides off when I put the iPad 2 in my laptop bag. The leather scuffs easily, I'm afraid to handle it. The back is not protected.

Wish Apple had made the same case for the iPad 2 that they sold with the iPad 1. :(

Soaking the case in baking soda and water help remove the bad smell. But it weaken the paint that was on case. It looks like red paint sprayed on the case and its already peeling. Using leather cleaner / conditioner just made it worse.

Just got my Yoobao red iPad2 case today. I haven't put the iPad in it yet because I'm waiting on my screen protector to arrive, so I can't comment on the sleep/wake thing. But the smell that has been mentioned here was not all that bad when I first opened it, and it's already lessening after just a few hours of setting out in the house. I do really like the look and feel of it, and I think it will look great with my white iPad. I'll report more after getting the iPad in it.

is anyone else having problems?

I've had my Yoobao for a while now and the smell is gone. I have to put my nose right on it to smell anything. I don't see it as a problem.

The sleep/wake issue is there if I force the cover all the way over when I wrap it around the back. I think where it naturally has the crease keeps the edge away from the magnet so it works fine for me.

Just like everything on the internet you get a full range of opinions and experiences to things. I think minor items get blown way out of proportion in forums.

We also have no problems with the case as others seem to have. The smell is all but gone.

A package arrived at our home today. It was a pair of leather sandals for my daughter from Zappos. We opened the box and .....whew!!!

The point is.....new leather smells. Shoes, ipad cases, wallets, handbags fresh out of the wrapping, whatever.

I received my black Yooboa case from Amazon (AYL) for my ipad 2 last week to notice a slice in the leather (yes there was an initial smell but I paid no attention knowing that it would dissipate). AYL responded immediately with a return label and the new one is on it's way. Expedited shipping would have been appreciated for my inconvenience but it will be here soon enough.

I received some emails from Kay at AYL and they are expecting the iPad 2 Yoobao case, version 2, to be available on Friday. The issues of the smell and the magnet sleep/awake issues should be fixed.

Does anybody have any info on this version 2 case, what it looks like etc? Is it a Magic style version of the case?

I got one and it's great!

Guess I was lucky. But I bought a red one on Amazon . . . which lists the case as "Pyrus," not Yoobao, by the way! Strange?!?

BUT: There was absolutely NO odor at all! In fact the case is really nice.Protects better than any case I've seen. And the magnetic op[en/close feature works perfectly.

IUf you want to see (and-hopefully-not smell-for yourself, you probably would be wise to buy from Amazon because it has such an incredible return policy.

Good luck.

After over a week of ownership mine does not smell at all.

It has other fit issues with the smart cover functionality but the smell is not a problem, and I've just disabled that feature. It's not like the iPad doesn't go to sleep on its own after a couple of minutes.

Once the smell had gone away for the most part, I put a heavy layer of leather conditioner on it, heated it up with a blow dryer, and left it overnight. Wiped off the excess the next morning and now it just smells like leather conditioner unless I stick my nose right on it and breath deeply.

It's a flawed product but unless you are super sensitive the smell dissipates after a few days. I will continue to use it until I find a better alternative that adds a minimum of bulk like this Yoobao.

I agree totally. I actually wiped it down with a quality leather cleaner I used in my car and haven't had any issues since.

That being said, I do think some people are much more sensitive to the smell. I own a printing company and some people act as though they were punched in the face when they walk in the door. So dramatic, practically swinging their arms like they were being attacked by a swarm of bees to deflect the smell. Then some people just walk in like they barely notice and calmly ask if we cleaned the presses recently.

The smell was very noticeable as soon as I opened it, but is pretty much gone now, and that was only 5 days ago. I do recommend using a high quality leather cleaner as soon as you get it. I had a conference the day after I got it and no one at the conference table even said anything. I almost expected people to get up gasping for air after reading some of the reviews.

The case flap is short though, but I disabled the auto on/off anyway so I never noticed whether or not it would initiate the auto off when closed. The case is pretty nice though for the money. It is leather, very thin, lightweight and didn't add much bulk.

The smell from the cases is not new leather smell, its the adhesive or sealant. New leather smells fantastic. If you disliked the smell...you were smelling glue/sealant.

My original Yooboa smelled horrible. I ozoned it and that helped. Today I can still smell it though more so up close. I am sure by now they have starting using different adhesive.

I received my rev2 case yesterday and I love it.

I received order for my ipad2 on Tuesday. I received my Yoobao yesterday.

I didnt handle the first version but the the second version, to me, is perfect.

Fits perfectly. No smell except for a light new leather smell that you expect. This was a great choice in wanting a simple leather case that fits the contours perfectly and not add bulk.

The magnets... jury still out. I mean it works perfectly but on a leather case, there is always a little looseness with leather so the positioning of the front cover will move. a cover really has to be designed with it really hinged and the material is more rigid.

Love the case though.

Exactly what I have been saying; the binding has too much play and if it were more rigid, I think the two covers would align better and the front cover would not appear to be an 1/8 of an inch too short as it does now and thus contribute to an inconsistent magnet performance.

they could probably use bigger magnets or extend the front cover that 1/8th you mentioned to compensate for the use of a soft and flexible material and an unhinged cover... but i imagine they dont because both of those would cause the issue of setting it off when the front cover is folded back.

on soft cases its just not practical. I love the case though so i will live with it. if i really want to use that feature, then hopefully the incase magazine jacket will be updated with magnets to utilize that feature cause I like that case as my second option.

Hey guys, I just got my hands on version 2 of this case, and it's improved over the first version. Though you may have washed your hands with Yoobao after your experience. No pun intended. :p

The smell is gone, smells like leather for the most part, and the magnet issue has been resolved.

There is a chance for the magnet to have some alignment issues with the cover periodically so that it doesn't put the iPad to sleep like it should but those occurrences are rare from my experience.

I've got a black one, and I really like the look and feel of this thing, the leather is ridiculously soft.

I made a video review of it here, if interested: http://www.jailbreakmovies.com/2011...r-case-or-how-the-smart-cover-was-outsmarted/

I bought 3 Yoobaos...2 with the horrible smell (returned), then my last from AYL on Amazon. No chem smell...just like a new leather smell. Now its perfect. Dont ask me why...but the new one is a tad softer and creases more easily. It "feels" much better than the first batch. That smell made me sick:(
