Apple needs to increase the size of the screen! And if they don't do it this time around, we'll all be waiting until 2016. 2016! Now I won't say keeping the same screen size now will throw Apple into bankruptcy, because it won't. Even with the same size screen people will still buy it. But, it will cause a slowing in sales. "Why upgrade when my 5/5s screen is the same?"

If it does start a decline in sales, investors will be unhappy. Unhappy investors will boot Tim out, and Tim doesn't want that. Tim will increase the screen size, or face ****DAS BOOT****!

I'd say 4.5-4.7 is a good compromise. I have big hands, but I can use the iPhone 5 well. Sometimes though, I'll hit the wrong key on the keyboard. For instance, if were typing "MacBook" it would come out "NacBook" or "MacVook" or something similar. Only 1 key off, but it throw the whole conversation off if I send that in a text.

I do love the 16-9 display of the current iPhone for watching movies and movies only. Has anyone here tried to type on the iPhone 5/5s in landscape mode? Its ridiculous. You only have this tiny little sliver on the top to see what your typing. I wouldn't mind having a slightly wider iPhone to make it easier to type on while in portrait mode.

I am sure Apple is coming here to read your post and paying attention to it.

You really think so? You must have some sort of inside information. Please, enlighten this group more with your voluminous insight!

Perhaps you are overlooking the intended audience of this post. "Greetings friends fellow Apple enthusiasts." I am certainly not posting under any belief that this post will be discussed at the annual shareholder's meeting. Rather, I came to MacRumors Forum to discuss exactly what the forum advertises to its users, "news and rumors you care about."

Posting my message on this forum is really no different, or meant to have a more powerful impact on the company, than me waddling up to the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store and sharing my thoughts about the screen size and stylus with those behind the bar. Well, other than, that audience would have already demonstrated they actually possessed knowledge and expertise about Apple products, unlike the audience here.

I am currently content with the 4" iPhone and have no problems with the size at all. With that said, if Apple comes out with more sizes, then I will assess to see if it meets my needs and go from there. It's all rumors at this point and they could literally come out with 3 different phone sizes all with high end specs to shut everyone up. I'm not gonna harp on it until I see the wares.

Thanks for reading!

OP, do your self a favor as a new member. Do a search on this forum to look up tons of similar posts about the screen size. This is kind of old now.

As a regular member of this board you probably already know this, but there are a ton of similar posts on here where a regular member points out that a topic has already been discussed on the forum. This is kind of the oldest trick in the book now.

PS. Can you post a link to some of those old posts you mention?

How is this a "trick"? There are no tricks here. There are just people annoyed by newbies starting the same darn thread over and over again. This is, in actuality, the oldest annoyance in the book, so to speak.

Apple (Ives) made it a point to mention that it was a very big deal and there was much consideration and deliberation in changing the iPhone screen from 3.5" to 4" during the release of the iPhone 5. i just don't see them changing the screen size again so quickly. plus it just feels like they are playing catch up with the competition, which, again, shouldn't be the point.
another point is product line clutter. one of the first thing Jobs did when he came back to Apple was to streamline the product offering and to do just a few things very well. i feel Apple is seeming to head back in the direction of product clutter. currently there are four different iPad models and three different iPhone models alone, plus four different iPod models. this doesn't even include computers.

People are just scared of change and cry about it.

Personally, I'm looking forward towards a larger screen iPhone (not large like 5.5" but 4.7").

I'm looking forward to the year when we finally will upgrade to a 10 inch iphone. Everyone will complain about it but they will just be afraid of change, typical backward people. If it were up to them we would still be living in caves.

no, the idea is to not chase the competition but rather to disregard the competition all together.
the idea is for Apple to spend the time and research to choose the ideal size for a phone and have the balls to stick with it. the average human hand has not changed sizes and there are no technological reasons to prevent them from manufacturing the "ideal" size. those are the types of decisions that Jobs was known for making. moving forward, someone at Apple needs to step up and make those decisions. if the iPhone (or any other Apple products) turns into design by committee, focus groups, shareholders then the product line up will be a mess in a few years.

have fun living in the past, large phone screens are todays standard.

It's obvious that people's hands are growing larger and larger each year. So naturally Apple will increase the iphones size each year, to match the people's hands.

I'm personally hoping for a larger screen. But I also don't have small hands...

It's time to move on and realize that the vast majority of people, including this reporter, want a bigger screen.

I have big hands,

Another obvious thing is all over the world, men and women alike have hands of the same size. So it makes sense for Apple to create a phone to accommodate that size.

Disregarding the competition altogether doesn't seem like a very good business plan.

I agree, however only if we disregard the competition like you said. Apple has it pretty well laid out for us. 4" phone, 8" tablet, 9.6" tablet. They don't want to cut into sales of other devices.

I guess it depends on the buyer overall though. Me for example, given those options I probably wouldn't get an iPad mini. However it would be because a bigger phone would make the full size iPad more attractive.

------------

I hate the argument, if you want a bigger iPhone get an iPad. Thats silly too me, the iPad is not a phone. So instead of carrying around an slightly oversized phone you are supposed to carry a phone AND a much bigger tablet? That is certainly less convenient....

Hello friends and fellow Apple enthusiasts,

I am posting today to voice a concern over the rumors I have been hearing regarding Apple increasing the screen size of the iPhone.

Increasing the screen size of the iPhone will increase the overall size of the phone resulting in a decrease of the portability of the phone, as well as sacrificing one-handed use of the phone. Portability and ease of use are huge factors in the iPhone's overall utility and should not be compromised.

I am also concerned that an increase in the size of the iPhone will result in the necessary use of a stylus. A stylus is not only unduly burdensome to retrieve for use each time you wish to use your phone, but also it is very tacky. I see very little advantage to using a skinny pen shaped device with a round mushy end to take notes, type, or scroll through my phone. Using a stylus also presents the problems of stowing the stylus when not in use, along with losing and replacing the stylus. Why would I want to use a stylus when I have a finger?

And finally, does anyone else feel that some kind of device with a 6 inch screen is no longer a "cell phone?" Case in point, how many of you have laughed at people who currently use the large Samsung phone? It is pretty hilarious to watch someone carry around what appears to look like an iPad up to their ear making phone calls.

One last note... Why would Apple want to be focusing on issues such as increasing the screen size when there are much more important issues to be addressed with the iPhone, such as, I dunno, maybe BATTERY LIFE!

Please join in the discussion weighing the pros and cons of Apple increasing the screen size of the upcoming new iPhone.

stick with the small iphone version then. there is nothing wrong with apple having multiple sizes. kinda like the ipad mini and ipad air.

I am a huge apple fan, but when these iphone updates come out it's very disappointing to see the same size screen with the same body. i want something new, i want something different. I would love a bigger phone or even an apple phablet.

I'm sure this is the case with a lot of people nowadays, but i rarely use my phone on my iPhone. I play music, text, email, facebook etc and rarely make calls anymore. Maybe a handful of times per week? I could care less if the device is huge...it would make it that much better for the things i do with my iphone now. Phones just aren't about talking anymore....they are way beyond that.

I have an HTC One and I have no issue with its size, 4.7 inches seems fine to me. I also have a 5S and do notice that its a bit small. But both work for me. There have been rumors of Apple making two size of iPhones, one 4.7 inches and the other 5.5 or bigger. If anything there is the 5 to suit your needs. Besides it doesn't require a stylus, the One Max doesn't have one and it works fine. Just because the Note does, doesn't mean its necessary.

personally i think 5" on the google nexus 5 is a bit too cumbersome.
4.5"-4.7" is the sweet spot I think.

----------

i don't know about that, considering peoples hands have always been about the same size.

in high school when friends sit around the table and laugh at each others jokes were you that kid that always laughs late?

Do Not Increaes The Size Of The iPhone Screen

I would be good either way. If Apple decides to keep the iPhone the same size. That sounds fine with me. I have bigger hands, but I make the iPhone 5s work for me. If the iPhone 6 is not bigger I will just save money and keep my iphone 5s.

If Apple decides to make the iPhone bigger ( wider and longer. Not just longer like the iPhone 5). I would be happy with that too. I would jump on a larger iphone as soon as I could get my hands on it.

Really I could get by with either, but a bigger iPhone does sound appealing to me, but I don't understand why OP, and other people have to get so bent out of shape about Apple maybe making the iPhone bigger. If you don't like the current offering of phones Apple has. Then keep what you have, and don't buy the new one. Very simple.

The 6 will be bigger. Get used to the fact. This reminds me of the horror posts when the went from the 4 to the 5. LOL!

I find that there is room for both the present size screen and a larger screen. It really depends on what one wants to do with their device. Business people might find a larger screen a great bonus with certain apps and extend the use into the realm of some iPad related stuff without having to carry an iPad.

As for me - like a fair size silent minority, we are watching Apple continue a form over function mindset. I speak specifically of text size and ease of view being sacrificed for some aesthetics. There is no reason not to offer up alternative screens for those that are tired of having to put on glasses every time we want to use the iPhone (or for that matter iPad). There is on the present size iPhone plenty of real estate on the screen to support larger fonts/text without having that sub-par work around in accessibility.

If Apple would consider above, there would not be as much a market for a larger screen. The present screen provides a 4x5 matrix of icons and their text below. Offer up a choice for perhaps 3x4 matrix with larger text tiles underneath. Also consider when going into music to have the option for less on the screen and larger. This can easily be done if Apple wishes to do so.

Weeks ago, I was at the Apple store where 7 iPad Minis were returned (according to the employee) because the text was too small. Here is a perfect example of wasted space on the screen. I have seen some non-Apple tablets and phones with far easier to see/read screens. Sadly, I may (as others have done) go that direction the next time around.
