My 2011 27" iMac died recently. While I've already moved on to a new PC (Intel i5-8400, GTX 1060), after 7 years of the iMac, I can't settle for a lesser screen, but I've found a lot of monitor options lacking in two big departments:
  • Monitors often have narrow viewing angles
  • Monitors often have no speakers or cheap, tinny speakers
Because of this, I figured maybe what I need is not a 27" monitor but a 27" TV. But then I find that 27" TVs are very hard to come by. It's as though there's a big no-man's land between 20" (too small) and 32" (won't fit on desk) sets, and even when I do find a TV of the right size, the resolution is often lower than the 2650x1440 resolution that my iMac had.

Ideally, I'd like to spend less than $500 on a display, so I'm hesitant to splurge on a 4K set or drop about a thousand dollars on a refurbished Apple Cinema display. So I don't know what to look for.

Am I boxing myself in with my specifications?

Honestly your best bet would be to post in the Mac Mini forum, as a lot of them have 3rd party monitors. Don't use a TV because they suffer from major input lag. You also can get a 4k IPS display for around 300-500 dollars. Check out the LG 4k monitors. Good quality for decent prices, although most don't seem to come with built in speakers.

You could try buying the 27" LED Cinema Display. It is very similar to your old iMac, and is even sleeker as it does not have a chin.

That's a fantastic point about the Mac Mini forum. Is there a way that I can just transfer this thread over to there? Or should I just copy and paste?

And I had no idea that TVs suffer from input lag. If that's the case, I definitely wanna steer clear of that.
