Anyone know where I can buy one in Australia? :)

i had one on order from two places since november last year, order got pushed back again and again and eventually supplier told them they had no idea when stock was coming in. i ordered from the states instead.

Just placed my order. :D

Ordered the HDD from ProVantage for $132.99 and the 800FW/USB housing from OWC/MacSales for $87.99. Was going to try the free route or the $27 USB housing, but decided I will probably appreciate having a decent housing in the future to use as an external drive or any future HDD swapping I might need to do. Now I must wait ...

Nice. Has anyone had any purchase experiences from
ProAdvantage ? Are they a reliable seller ?

They looked safe enough to me. Offered choices and all for shipping and return policies. I'll let you know when I get mine; I'm HOPING I'll get it before I go out of town on Thursday.

Update:

ProVantage called me this morning. Although their site says it's special order and should be shipped in 2-4 days, they called today to tell me that the best guess they could give me on a ship date was sometime in June.

I politely asked her to cancel my order and went to the OWC/MacSales website where it may be $27 more, but in the last 3 days the shipping time has gone from 8 days, to 7 days, to now 6 days (which leads me to believe this is an accurate time frame).

The housing I ordered from OWC/MacSales appears to have shipped today, so I'll report back when I either have both products in my hands or get that call to say I won't have it for a long, long time. :(

This is disappointing to read. I also placed an order with ProVantage yesterday because of the 2-4 day special order shipping. I have not yet received a phone call, but now I'll be expecting it. June? How nice that they already charged my card, with false information on their web site. I too will be canceling my order when they call. :(

Umm ... you realize you provided a google for the wrong thing, right? There's a mighty big difference between a 2.5" HD and a 3.5" HD. Nice try though. If you can find a way to fit one of those 3.5" drives into the slot for a 2.5", let me know and I'll thank you for the link.

uuuum i searched for 500GB 7200RPM hard drive. just as the title of the thread stated.

sorry if you didn't want to add the 2.5" in the beginning. just showing you a way to search instead of being spoonfed

Check my sig, I put this drive in my MacBook. Love it! Would copy & paste the link to thread specifically for this drive, but that's right I have to wait until June to have copy & paste on my iPhone. Will post the link tonight when I'm off work.

While you do have a point and I completely agree with you about people asking to be spoonfed, this is, all the MBP/PB subforum... ;)

If you had read the thread, you would have known the OP was looking for a MBP HD, and I'm pretty sure the size should be common knowledge from that point.

Perhaps in the future, you could read the thread and learn what the posters are talking about so you can provide useful feedback if you have any, as opposed to glancing at it, assuming everyone is too stupid to use Google, and tossing that out like you're the first and only genius that thought of it.

The OP asked a question and the rest of us tried to help. Isn't that what these forums are for?

Looks like it's out of stock at newegg right now, but it's all good; mine's already ordered.

Thanks to the link to the other forum. ;) That looks like a lot of good stuff to go through ... just not all at one time. :D A page or two at a time. ;) Thanks!

i read the thread and copied the thread title, which is what i stated in my previous post. thanks for the suggestion on etiquette though - from someone with less than 40 posts that means a lot

Seriously though, the very FIRST post of this thread...

Do they make a 500GB MBP drive with 7200 RPM ?

If they do, would love to upgrade !

thanks

Pretty much self explanatory that it's an internal MBP drive.

LOL. The fact that you felt threatened enough to search my history and come back with my number of posts brings me to two thoughts: 1) you realized you made yourself look pretty uninformed by trying to seem smart in your first post in this thread, and 2) maybe if you read more and posted less, you'd have more real information to share. Thanks for the compliment though; it's nice to know someone feels that threatened by me. Perhaps you do need a lesson on etiquette, but go get it from someone you will listen to. You seem to prefer posting/talking over reading/listening around here. Grow up and get over yourself.

I hope both of you are done now...

Back on topic: To the OP... is there any reason you need the 7200rpm? The WD5000BEVT Scorpio Blue 500gig drive is pretty fast on data throughput. It might be a little slower on some things, but not by much. I'm only asking because the Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 500gig drive seems to be really hard to come by. GFSarah, hopefully you won't get burned a second time with an order they can't fill, so I guess we're all waiting to see how that turns out. I'd love to get a first-hand report on the drive...( yes, I've read the other thread several weeks ago when the drive first came out...) if you get lucky. I'm more interested in real-world reports of what it's like to live with that HD in a MBP than I am in statistics. I'm already considering a second 500gig drive as a portable backup, and reliability is my main concern, noise and speed the second.

Currently it's showing 5 days til it ships, so I'm hoping that's accurate. I can't wait to get my hands on it! :D And even if I do have to wait a bit longer, it's not the end of the world ... I just didn't think a "best guess of June" from ProVantage was reasonable. As far as my need for 7200 RPM ... well, I like the speed. :D The difference has been enough for me to see and I've gotten so used to my stock 320G 7200 RPM that I'd be afraid to go back to a 5400. I have to do something because I need more space, so I'll just have to wait a bit longer if OWC pushes back the ship date.

And yes, I will happily report back once I have it installed and running (whenever that might be:rolleyes:). I'm interested about the noise level, too. My MBP is sooooo silent, I'm sure I'll hear any additional noise easily. Another point of interest is the overall performance of the Seagate vs. the Hitachi I've got now. I got my FireWire housing unit today, so as soon as I get the HD, I'll be ready to copy onto it and install it.

As ts been mentioned a few dozen times, most of the real world difference between a 320GB 7200RPM and a 500GB 5400 is going to be in the user's head. I'd be more concerned about how much cache.

You really should read this review. It doesn't include the Seagate Momentus 500g 7200rpm drive, but does include a few other 7200rpm drives in performance chart comparisons to the WD5000BEVT Scorpio Blue. There are around 10 charts on access time, I/O, throughput, application benchmarks, energy consumption, efficiency with I/O, efficiency with streaming reads and efficiency with video playback, among others.
What impressed me was how often the WD5000BEVT Scorpio Blue was at or near the top of the charts overall. My own experience with the drive is that is nice and quiet, runs cool (82-95F) and doubled my performance over the stock 5400 Fujitsu drive. And I got it for $50 less than the Momentus was selling for (if you didn't mind waiting to be notified by Newegg...)

Anyway that was my decision reasoning... and so far, I'm really happy with the additional space and quiet nature of this drive. Some people have reported head-parking clicks every 30 seconds or so, but I haven't. It could be my prefs are different, but in any case it's almost as hush-quiet as the original drive, which was virtually silent for all practical purposes.

Especially in the case of the WD500g, which is faster than almost all other 5400rpm drives, and even beats the WD 320g 7200rpm drive in a few stats, especially efficiency. Hard drives have come a long way in the last couple of years...

The WD500GB Blue is definitely a great drive. I have one of these, as well as a Seagate 500GB 7200, and the Seagate is definitely a bit quicker. 15MB/s quicker reads on average according to Xbench.

The only problem with the Seagate is definitely availability. These drives are unobtainable at the moment. Anyone with an order and an estimated ship date should prepare to be disappointed. I've had a 2nd seagate drive on order for over a month now, they just keep pushing the ship date back.
