Seems people think it means the M1X is so good, it's "unleashed." But it just doesn't feel right. Is it about the chipset or something else about the MBP?

My two thoughts:
  1. May be about the battery life. It's so good you are not leashed to the power adapter.
  2. Could also be about performance of the M1X. It's so good that you're not held back from doing anything you want with it.

A few guesses:

• It’s a jab at Intel. The Mac is finally going to be able to show its power “unleashed” and not constrained by Intel.

• It’s a reference to a higher M-series chip. Suggesting M1 is the “tame” version, and they’re going to unleash the beast with an M1X.

• Battery life is so good, you are not “leashed” to a power cable.

• Or it’s just fun marketing hinting that Apple is finally going to unleash their full potential.

Good marketing copy often has multiple meanings. So my guess is they had a few things in mind.

It’s not like they haven’t used this terminology before, so please don’t go getting too carried away…

I expect it's going to be about "unleashing the true power of Apple Silicon" or something along those lines. I.e.: "the M1 was a demonstration of what we could do on a strict power budget, and now look at what it can do when we turn up the power draw and give it more cores."

Kuo said AR/VR would release mid 2022. Apple could announce the 18th and that would be in keeping with giving developers a kit and time to adapt their apps or make new ones. Unleashed might be referring to the Oculus Link cable used for the Quest 2. Everyone is so focused on MBP, but that might just be half the event.

Yes. Like someone said in another thread, they are making AirTags for pets. You can place one on your neighbor's Yorkshire Terrier, let them off the leash, and they can make it to the dog park on their own to impress the ladies.

Unleashed.

Just my speculation here, and I will eat my words if I'm wrong, but I'm going to say this is 100% not happening at this event. The only time Apple has ever announced something in this capacity (giving devs time to prepare without announcing an actual product) was at WWDC. I think Apple has already been slowly developing this technology by including the LiDAR sensors in their ipads and iphones.

I think not only Unleashed says "M1X", the background says it more. It illustrates the speed of light. As we know Apple likes to use superfluous words in their product marketing and the combination of Unleashed and the speed of light says Macs. An iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods... doesn't imply speed of light. Only main category left is Mac's. So we can safely say that it will be some kind of new Apple Silicon product.

I think it's just a powerful sounding word that can mean so many different things in context to Apple and their products; you can interpret it however you want. Gives the event a bigger sense of ceremony.

Unleashed;

Apple is unleashing itself and customers from the performance stalled Intel chips and antiquated x86 architecture, completing the Intel to Apple silicon transition early. Likely accelerated when Intel decided to take jabs at Apple.

Or it could just mean they are unleashing it from their possession after all this waiting and giving it to you (for a price).

It is unleashed because the M1 is an iPad chip. The thermals of a Mac mini and 13" MBP can handle much more than that.

So this is an "unleashed" version which is likely to be a real laptop chip with much higher TDP.

As is typically Apple, the word is probably the confluence of a few things. As was mentioned, it could be in reference to battery life, MagSafe — perhaps the battery charges extremely quickly as well, in a way that's new for an Apple product. It could be the speed of the flash storage & inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 technology. But obviously, the speed & power of Apple silicon is probably the central meaning to the marketing hype.

Unleashed means losing bare metal x64 compatibility (Rosetta doesn't count since not all things run), inability to multi-boot other OS', can't boot into Windows x64 to run games, etc. So, unleash from freedom and versatility.
