I had to refresh my memory, but there were three whole years (well, maybe 2.5) between the iPad 10th and 11th generations. Do we know if the 12th gen is imminent, or can we expect a similar three year gap between release dates?

I need to replace my iPad Air 3 because it’s just getting a little bit slow now, but knowing my luck Apple will release the 12th gen the day after I buy an 11th gen 😂. I can wait, but I won’t bother if it’ll be another two years! For the record I’m not bothered in the slightest about Apple Intelligence.

My guess is, maybe in the Fall? But it really is just a guess. I really thought it would have been announced last week like everyone was saying. I was also considering one as a replacement for my iPad Air 4. I decided to just order the M4 iPad Air instead.

I know, it’s tempting to do that as well, but by not releasing the 12th gen, that’s what they want you to do. Must resist 😂

I still have no issues with my "junky" 10th gen. I don't get all the hate for it considering it's basically the same as the 11th gen.

I am on it right now and it works great. I have the LTE / 256gb model and it works great no matter where I am. I love it actually. If only it was 13 inches. ha ha. I am old and my eyesight and hearing are starting to get bad.

How is the 10th gen junky? It has basically the same innards as the 2020 iPad Air (A14/4GB) and that runs fine. Reloads often but still quite fast.

With that said, most folks don't want to pay the same $$$ for 1+ year old hardware so I totally understand wanting to wait for an updated version before buying.

My daughter has the A10 and it seems really nice, much smoother than my iPad Air 3 now.

Thats what all the YouTubers claim. I was being sarcastic. ha ha. I bought mine day one and love it. It's a great device and very performant. It's a little hefty with the keyboard case but still way lighter than any of my laptops.

Add in the optimized software it's a winner.

Apple will probably release the cheaper regular iPad later this Spring. I think they didn’t want it to compete with the new cheaper Macbook Neo upon it’s release.

Think of it this way - when was the last time low-cost iPad was released with a current gen chip? Never.

So it would be unrealistic to expect it anytime before A20 is released this September, hence late 2026. It's the lowest guy on pole, so it takes time amortize the cost from A19 devices.

The expectation that it would be announced March 4 was a bit of a moonshot prediction.

iPad 10th gen - A14
iPad 11th gen - A16
iPad 12th gen - ?

If they put A17 or A18 on there, then it's feasible.

Mind, the current gen iPad mini has the A17 Pro so if they're putting something newer on the base iPad, it might be released around the same time as the new iPad mini.

The current leak indicates A19 and the source is highly credible.

September/October for an A18/A19 base iPad and A20 Pro iPad mini then. The base iPad being 'late' is a good sign it will be more than a 1 generation chip jump. Going to the A17 would probably affect sales of the A17 Pro mini given buyers expect to be more 'current' than the base model as it is positioned as a mid range device and hasn't had a price cut.

Doesn't the MacBook Neo have A18 Pro?

I'd love to be wrong but I kinda feel like Apple wouldn't put a newer chipset than the Neo on the $349 iPad.

That's probably a large part of why $349 iPad isn't out yet and won't be out until late 2026.

Both are low-cost products, so both will probably have similar chips and RAM.

A19 is also 9% smaller than A18.

Yes.

I therefore think it will be A18 base iPad (entry level iPad having more power than the entry level Macbook wouldn't make sense.) Both then on annual upgrade schedule, with the 2nd Gen Neo either getting 12GB RAM or the option to pay to upgrade to it. iPad mini only gets an update when the base iPad is going to reach the same generation of chip as the existing mini.

Entry level $599 iPhone 17e already has more power than MacBook Neo if you want to think that way. Unless all products are refreshed the same day, there will always be a performance gap.

Most importantly is the fact consumers don’t choose $349 iPad over MacBook Neo or vice versa simply because it has a certain chip. Rather, people ask if the iPad can do want they want or if Neo is better.

Thing with apple these days is that the performance gap does not really matter anymore. I was doing something on my fathers 11. it still feels quick today.
