Ok, unless there is a VOID of difference between the Uk and US, since when did lessons involve kids with computers on tables???????

I mean, Im only 32, but NOWHERE in the UK is it common practice in primary/middle/higher/university for students to sit amongst a sea of laptops/netbooks in class or lectures!.....the concept of that seems plain weird frankly!

Teachers/pen/paper has always been a perfectly happy medium this side of the pond and to that end, the debate of 15 and 17" is kinda irrelevant to be honest!

Oh by the way, I can recommend any HB weight pencil for note taking, they cost less than a dollar I expect in the states.

good luck!

It depends... I don't take mine too class for notes, rather to do work between classes. I use a mechanical pencil for notes, and record lectures with my phone (nexus one).

I would say maybe 1/4 of students do the laptop thing, but it also depends on the class.

It depends on the class. I used a laptop to take notes in History and government class and a few other classes for note taking. For me the only classes that are good for note taking are ones that do not require diagrams, or formally.
If it is just list and what not I like typing my notes because it is easier to read.

The other classes I would use my laptop in was my programing classes were we were working lab computers in classes any how. Those classes I tend to move over to my own laptop because it is easier to keep everything in one location.

All in all most of my notes in both on my first degree and the current one I am working on I use pencil and paper for my notes most of the time.

15" with i5 +anti glare high res is the best compromise between performance, price and portability I think.

The performance between i5 and i7 is unimpressive and the 17" might not be heavy, but it is heavier. Why carry more than you need to? And odds are if you are doing something that need a lot of screen space you would be much better off just getting an external display.... but then if you are considering an external display why not just get a lower resolution and save even more money towards something that'll really benefit performance like a SSD or more ram?

wow! first off, in my university, about 50% of the lecture attendees take laptops. in the more boring classes that number shoots up to 90%, but it's usually about 50%.

as for my 17", i am going to take it to and fro' class every day. and to starbucks when i want to look like i'm doing something important. i used to take my much bulkier (in every way) toshiba to class every day and i never had any problems. except when it ran out of battery. so i always carried a notebook and a pen just in case. probably not going to have to worry about that now that i have the MBP.

i'm not sure where all these people who say "OH LAWD THE 17" IS TOO BIG TO PICK UP AND MOVE AROUND!!!!!!" i'm not a big guy by any means, but i took my 17" to class with a bunch of textbooks as well. i'm not a huge guy by any means, and it was a piece of cake, providing you get a 17" notebook backpack. it seems like there's a lot of 47 pound asthmatics around here who quake at the sheer sight of the mighty 6.6 pound 17".

another thing that only the owners of 17" computers would probably know, is that your computer often strikes up conversations because it's so different. that happened to me all the time. i can't wait to see how many chicks i pick up with the MBP this year..
