Its technically just a bigger iPad which has been rebranded as a 'pro' device.

The first gen element of it is the introduction of the apple pencil.

No it's just a bigger iPad. Apart from the pencil and the pressure sensitive screen there is no new technology here.
So then I guess the first gen iPad wasn't a new product? What new technology did it have over the iPhone?

And the iPad is technically just a bigger iPod touch which was rebranded iPad, right?

The iPad Pro doesn't give up anything to the other iPad models, but there's also nothing particularly "Pro" about it. It just has a bigger screen. It doesn't even have more storage than the Air. The next iteration of the Air will probably get the A9X processor, and possibly 4GB RAM -- maybe even the keyboard connector. So it'll really just be a size difference.

I'd like the see the Pro grow into a product that's really differentiated from the Air -- more memory, more storage, maybe additional ports.

No gadget on the world has anything really pro on it. I really can't stand that pro elitism anymore. Pro is just work oriented, not some kind of high end equipment.

Why not? The iPP at least has new screen technology to work with the Pencil. What did original iPad have over the iPod touch other than a bigger screen?
And didn't the original iPad mostly run scaled up iPhone apps?

No way Apple puts 4GB of RAM on the iPad Air for at least the next two iterations.

The larger screen made possible tasks that were previously deemed unfeasible on a smaller display.

You could comfortably read webpages in their native desktop view, rather than having to contend with a striped-down mobile view.

Would you have tried annotating on a pdf document or creating a drawing on a 3.5" screen? Just the larger screen was enough to change the way people interacted with their devices.

Oh, I totally agree. I was just playing devils advocate to another poster who was insisting that the original iPad was a "first gen" product, but the iPad Pro isn't.

It's a "first-gen" product officially, but realistically it's just a modified platform. It's like a 4-door mini cooper: exact same car, just 6" longer and 2 extra doors.

Does it feel like a first gen? Most certainly not. I LOVE my iPad Pro - I wouldn't trade it for anything at this point - I genuinely think it is the best $1100 bucks I have spent on an Apple product so far.

I consider it one. The main reasons being I feel that the software hasn't actually caught up to the hardware.

That combined with the lack of some new features such as 3D touch make me feel like the next generation will (like the iPad 2 and Air 2) be the one that will be worth buying, assuming it get's 3D touch and a more specific version of iOS that takes advantage of the extra large screen.

That being said, I think it's the best first gen product they've made. And unlike iPad 1 I think this product has some serious legs in terms of how long it'll get updates and run those updates well.

I don't see the iPad Pro as 1st gen product as the iPad has been around since 2010. Being the first iPad exceeding 9.7" with a "destop class CPU/GPU" I see it as 1st gen oportunity for 3rd party developers and Apple himself to create iPad Pro applications for example (final cut pro, photoshop..etc.) The Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard are amazing but Pencil needs to access notification center, Control center, slide over...etc) The Smart keyboard needs backlit.

No it is a copy of the surface pro 1 through 4.... Apple is not longer the innovators... I'm sad.... Google and Microsoft will probably start to get a grip on Apple sooner than later... Say it ain't so

So the device itself isn't first gen, but the ecosystem around it -- the apps and accessories -- are first gen.

To me, that sounds like splitting hairs.

iPad Pro is a product that could easily be viewed either way.

Loved by some, other potential buyers have chosen to hold back taking a wait and see approach. In reality I just don't think it matters. Apple is so influential, so powerful, so wealthy, they can prop up any product, making it look successful.

Apple Watch is a perfect example of a product with "secret" sales statistics. More so than any time in Apple's history, sales volume is easily manipulated to tell the story Apple wants told.

Like a dictator holding life and death decisions over a commoner, Apple now writes it's own story independent of the truth. Steve Jobs worked very hard to bring Apple into the realm of total dominance and control.

Very impressive indeed. :D

Personally I see it as a new iteration of iPad. Because it's essentially a bigger iPad with some added features. It's not an entirely new product. They've taken what they learned from the iPad line and put it into a new iPad, that just doesn't seem first generation to me. I would consider the Apple Pencil to be first generation though.

Does it have to be one or the other? I love the iPad Pro, but I think of it as a first gen product.
I find the iPad Pro quite good for its target market.

The only thing that truly matters is if you like it, have a need for it, and if it comes in a configuration that works for you.

:D

People say it is first gen to justify the purchase. Adding a smart stylus input doesn't make it a first gen device.

Or just another iteration of the iPad platform which has been around for 5 years? Was just thinking this because someone said in reference to the iPad pro "don't buy it. It's a first generation product". I don't consider it one but am interested to see what you guys think

Seems to me the clue's in the name - it's an iPad.
