Absolutely Not!

I love my phone and I think it is a great step forward from the 4.

I also think it is stupid to want your phone to look "unique" and different from the 4 so people know you have the 4S and not the 4.

Who cares really?

I don't remember seeing these complaints with the 3GS. Maybe there were, but definitely not to the level that the 4S is.

I would like the next one to look the same for the most part and maybe have a slightly larger screen. I don't care for the tear drop shape of the alleged prototype.

I can see how you feel that way, however, despite appearances, the 4s is pretty new throughout.

Remember what Steve jobs said, the biggest misconception people have about design is the way a product looks. Design is about how it works through and through. This year apple bought us what I think is a breakthrough in voice control, a new iOS, iCloud, and soon IMatch. A suit of products giving you a revolutionary experience.

To date nobody has pulled off voice control like apple have. Android tried but failed. It's a beta product but works really well. Apple are possibly 3 years ahead of the competition which in technology is huge advantage. Amazon bought a company to match but apple have had years of tuning. I think people underestimate how far apple are ahead with this.

Also remember that technology is never new apple are probably already building many different prototypes for the iPhone 6.

Just on a side note, I don't think you will see such leaps in software advancements in the iphone5 as you see in the 4s. I think it's the software that is the magic here. The 5 will look different and will have hardware advancements as the global markets and supply chain catches up and stabilises.

but let me guess....

you would have been happy if there was a case redesign even if there were no internal improvements made to the phone.

internal hardware > case design, at least the last time I checked

I also think apple needs to keep mid term releases like the 4s.

They will reach a point where there is only a certain number of ways to physically design a phone and they rely on global markets and enhancements in processing to allow them to do more with software.

They will struggle with bottlenecks with battery capacity and design and network speeds if their suppliers don't pick up the pace with innovation. I'm already worried about battery life in mobiles with faster processors.

Indeed we don't need them much bigger now there's tablets.

I dont want the iPhone to go the way of some other phones and have 5" screens in a device you need both hands to hold. A small bump on screen size would be nice in the next iPhone, but not if it means the phone is more than a few mm larger in size.

There are many ways Apple can handle the change in screen resolution -

1. keep it the same but just make it slightly less ppi, making it 100% compatible with all games,

2. Add more pixels in proportion to the increased screen size, keeping ppi the same. That way older games can run at their original size, centered on the screen with a black border around them - updated games have the ability to use the added real estate. This can also easily accomodate a slight change in the screen ratio as well, giving us a higher screen, with the ability to better handle wide screen movies when in landscape mode.

3. Change the screen res to something way higher, say double the existing screen resolution, and use doubling to upscale the old programs, while the new ones can utilise the additional screen resolution - not my favourite option.

Controversially I don't like the rumoured screen design of the 5. The idea of having a screen that goes nearly to the bezel I don't think will look right..

iPhone's and iPads looks symmetrical and nice to look at in that respect as they retain gaps at the side.

Also I hold the phone and my fingers go all the way around and naturally rest on the edges of the screen, if this part of the screen is active it's going to interfere with scrolling and touch.

I don't think a 4" screen with 1920x1280 is even possible at this point in time. ;)

People don't even have that resolution on their 60" Plasmas. :p

I know, so lets leave that for the iPhone 6, and stick a slightly larger screen in the 5 ;)

Oh and I only have a 50" plasma :(

If I wanted a larger screen with less ppi, I would just get a different phone. If they can't deliver the same clarity on a bigger screen size, they should save it for when they can, and leave the screen size the way it is.

going to a 4" screen would lower the PPI to ~300 vs the current 3.5" screen @ ~326 PPI... hardly a noticeable difference, especially when you consider that there really is no way to increase the resolution on a 4" screen to 326 PPI without fragmenting iOS devices.

No, I don't feel the 4S is a stopgap measure.

They took a near-perfect phone and made it faster. That's the only update I really, really wanted. The camera update is also significant.

I don't want a bigger phone. If anything, I want a smaller phone around the 3.5" screen.

Also, WHY do people keep calling it the iPhone 5? The iPhone 4S is the FIFTH iPhone, therefore 4S=5. Next years iPhone will not be called the iPhone 5, if anything it would be called the iPhone 6, but we really have no way of knowing... the most logical reasoning would be to think apple would add some type of 4G nomenclature to the next iPhone assuming it has LTE support.

They don't go Iphone 4 to Iphone 6. I said a few weeks ago the chances are they could brand it Iphone 5 and say it's got a duel core they don't need to make a big deal of the A6 name. Plus they could release IOS 5 and another number next to it to fit with the new phone.

People only assume it will be Iphone 6 now due to A6+IOS6 but that doesn't mean they can't call it Iphone 5 and release an Iphone 5S a year later? Also they could infact continue the Iphone 4 name for example Iphone 4GS as the 4G network may be ready next year.

Indeed but for years other manufacturers thought different. It's very unusual for a company to offer a two year old flagship phone like the 3GS on a free contact. In years gone by it's usually a redesign with a worse camera, worse battery and just a cut cost one.

So I wonder if the Iphone 4 will be around for a while yet even if there is a redesign down the line? Who would have predicted in 2009 the 3GS could still look cool in 2011 or even next year? Personally I find this an amazing shift in the mobile trend market.

Were people's panties this tight when the iPhone 3GS came out? I don't seem to remember the amount of whining, moaning, griping, complaining, and general bitching about that update when it came out.

I blame the rumor hype created by blogger/news speculating the skies and disappointment sets in when it doesn't materialize.

I love my 4S and don't feel like we got the shaft from Apple with this release. I agree with what others have said about the rumors getting out of control regarding the case design.

If you stayed away from the rumors and "analyst" predictions, would you still feel the same about the 4S?

No.

I own the best smartphone offered by the best smartphone company, imo.

I don't have any ego attached to that ... it is what it is.

I don't want the form factor to change. I think the iPhone 4/S is the ergonomically perfect size and dimensions. Any smaller, thinner, wider, would be worse to me. I don't think it's a stop gap, I think it's their best effort given current tech.

Millions of people own iPhones

To put that into perspective less than 5% of people just on these forums moan.

Out of all the owners that's less than 1% easily.

Sure there are problems but millions are happy.
