...the problem isn't the pound or two difference in weight, its the crap battery life of full sized laptops... if I need to be portable, I'll take my netbook with its 9 hour battery life...how many really need power to render video when "unplugged"?...

I have the 17" and it is not bad, for limited travelling. However, i don't think it is that great if you travel very frequent. This is why i am considering MBA now and using MBP as a desktop (with external monitore).

...I laugh when I'm on a plane and people are trying to open their 15 - 17" laptops and the person in front of them reclines the seat all the way:eek:

100%. Its so thin and sleek for so much power. You can use it as a portable machine and a desktop replacement.

I used to have a 15" Aluminum PowerBook, and now I've got the 13" unibody MacBook. It's technically only one pound lighter, but the difference is definitely noticeable. I do a lot of walking with my computer in a laptop bag, and my shoulder is less tired/sore carrying around my uMB. I've already decided my next computer will most likely be an Air.

Go with the light.

i think it depends on what your portability needs are. The mbp really does need quite a large bag (especially when in a second skin or something, and perosnally, you have to be super careful withn your bag too),and so is portable for the daily commute to work, or moving around the house etc, however if you want something with you for most of the time, its footprint is really too large and its also too heavy.

The air has a smaller footprint, but would still restrict you to having a backpack or proper bag, however its weight makes a massive difference.

For me,there hasn't bee a true portable since the 12" powerbook.

I'm guessing this is your first laptop and you've never lugged around a Dell or Toshiba or HP monstrosity...seriously the MBPs are a delight to carry around.

Cheers.

Yep this will definitely be my first. But I have decided to go with the 15 in. I mapped out the dimensions and created a paper model of both the 15'' and 13'' and there isn't that much difference. I wasn't concerned with the weight, I was concerned with the overall size. I wanted something that would fit well in my lap and based on my models the 15'' should fit perfectly. And that's crazy how the other poster stepped on his and it didn't break!
Thanks for all of you guy's help!

That's nothing, I have a friend who treats hers as if it was worthless. once at uni I came in her room and found it underneath one leg of a chair she was sitting on.

She drops it almost daily as her room is messy and she's always balancing it on top of things that it inevitably falls off of.

Recently she spilled a bottle of sparkling water in it and continued to use it until she smelt burning, then turned it off.

But guess what, it still works perfectly.

For me (a fairly petite female) the regular 13" Macbook is about the top end of what I'd really consider portable. It actually beautifully *just* fits into my travel bag (which was made for documents, not laptops) and I can whip it out easily and hold it in one hand. It's perfect for the train and flights. I had a G3 iBook before which was even better - slightly smaller screen - but that's a little too slow for me now ;)

My larger, more male friends have the Pros though and seem happy carrying them around the country. They're gorgeous and I have to say, if I could live with the slight increase in size I'd definitely want one.
