Not needing it but very much liking it. The majority of time my iPad is on wifi, with cellular data off. On the few occasions I need it, it's on. It's a connivence to me and was worth the extra money.

Just wondering if anyone uses the cellular or just mainly sticks to wifi.

I could use tethering from my iphone if I need, iphone is always with me. Pointless option and cost a lot extra plus monthly charges for service.

And last time I checked every single cellular ipad had wifi.

What's the point with cellular if you need to tether your phone to use it properly?

I've had cellular in my previous iPads and it always annoyed me with their limits on how much data you could use that forced me to tether even though I got the cellular ersion, what's the point in it? This time around I decided to skip it and already ordered a 64 GB WiFi only that I will pick up tomorrow morning.

A cellularless iPad is crippled by design.

ipad with cellular is waste of $, tethering to iphone provides same speed and quality and just two clicks to enable. I wish they have this as a button on sliding panel instead of flashlight for example.

I use my iPad a lot and would rather not run down my iPhone battery.

I have shared data plan on AT&T, it costs me $10 a month to add it to my existing plan.

If you have AT&T or T-Mobile perhaps since data works when you're on a call. However, T-Mobile data is limited to edge outside cities so that's less valuable. Verizon & Sprint are stuck with iPhones that can't use data while you're on the phone so no sharing while talking.

This is important too. Battery definitely runs down faster when operating a mobile hotspot. Also, the phone gets really hot if you run the hotspot to support tablets or laptops on a road trip while connected to the charger. And don't even try to runs a Map program that uses constant GPS. Your phone will virtually melt. :)

I prefer a separate Verizon iPad data plan. @ $10 on a shared plan it's worth it for as often as I use it.

It's worth it if you need it frequently.

Cheers,

Don't forget that while using you phone as a hotspot your iPad thinks its on wifi and loads higher res assets like videos. You will plow through your data plan at a faster pace.

The only reason I'm buying a cellular version is because of the GPS chip. I won't be getting an additional data plan.

this is something that i've been giving a lot of thought of. i've never owned an ipad so ipad air will be my first. my iphone 5 is locked in to original AT&T unlimited data plan from the original iphone so they wont allow me to tether to any other device.

my ipad air will be for personal enjoyment, but there may be a case ONE day where i'll have to VNC in to one of my users machines for work. hasn't happened yet but i'm thinking it might be better to have when that happens or not have it and be stuck. i really really don't want to pay for another data plan or extra for the ipad itself

Just received a "support" call from my mom. She can't get her wi-fi only iPad to connect to her iPhone (paired via bluetooth). She's definitely getting an iPad with cellular next time.

You are the perfect candidate for TMobile 200MB per month free for life then.

My wife's original iPad was WiFi only and while we had a MiFi for connectivity, it was a pain. With our current Verizon Share Everything plan, it doesn't cost much more to have it on the data plan and gives much more flexibility. I only turn the hotspot on when needed.

My iphone battery is doubled by Mophie case, I could watch Netflix on iPad tethering to iphone with Mophie for couple of hours non-stop. It will eat some data but it will do it anyway. Besides I could connect several other devices and that is what I did year ago while Sandy.

Oh, but that is GPS is for, drop Verizon :) Mophie case is cheaper than extra $ for ipad with cell connection and monthly charges anyway.

yes i need cellular version i will be picking up my cellular version at AT&T on friday i will start uesing my iphone 4S 3G a lot lot less and my ipad Air 4G a lot more but will maine ues it has wfi olny tablet at home and at other places that has wfi

I went with wifi only last time. I thought it was the best idea considering I tether from my phone. It works really well for data but I do find myself using GPS on the larger screen as it is just easier to see and leaves my phone free for calls. The downside is I had to buy a $149 GPS (elf pro which I do recommend) which connected to my bluetooth to continue to use the GPS. If I would have just spent the extra $129 on the cellular chip, I would have the GPS built in.

Now I am torn between wifi model again and keep using the elf or sell the elf and buy it with the chip built in.

The advantage is always on connectivity without having to tether. And without running down the batter on my phone which I prefer to use to, you know, talk.

And the iPad cellular is no clicks. Plus I have the advantage of saving my phones battery for doing other things, like talking.

I consider $10/month to be a worthwhile trade off for the convenience. I know people who spend that much on coffee a week.

I spend more on coffee but just see no needs. Wifi at work, wifi at home, wifi in hotel, wifi in airport, wifi on vacation :) etc ... Anything in between I could connect to iPhone.
