Do you guy feel the "need" to get a New MBP Every year ?

Nah I’m still on my base 14” M1 Pro. It’s still very capable and I feel no need to upgrade. I edit photos and video on it no problems at all.

I used to be pretty good at holding the line on doing this as well, but I have gotten lazy/covetous a few times recently and bought new. Last time it was an M4 MacBook Air, which within 6 months had dropped several hundred dollars.

Mother Earth, and Father Wallet. If you WANT a new MBP every year, and have the coin, go ahead. Give your one-year-old machine to a deserving person, or otherwise find a good home for it. Sometimes I read threads like this and I think "I am really not Apple's demographic". Still happily using a 2017 MBP 15". When it fails hardware-wise, or something I need just won't work without a newer macOS version, then I'll think about what's next.

I have not forsworn the cloud, but I do use it to my advantage. As a Gen-Xer I prefer physical CDs that I can rip to MP3s, which I copy to my music library on my NAS. I'll listen through an app on my Macs (not iTunes or Music though) that can access my NAS and update on the fly as music is added or removed.

Typically for streaming I use a menubar app (on my Mac) that streams stations I like from SOMA FM. If there is anything that particularly interests me, then I'll look up what is actually playing on the stream and then use Google for the artist. If I like what I hear, I'll buy the MP3s (or a physical disk to rip MP3s).

I do the same with Pandora (which I joined around the time it launched) and Spotify. This is a good way (it seems to me) to find music I would not ordinarily hear and then contribute to the artist by paying them for physical/digital media. I've run across a few game soundtracks I very much like in the last year or so doing this.

So, none of my music is actually 'in the cloud' or DRM'ed this way. All MP3s on a home network NAS.

still rocking (not chair) a MacBook Air from 2010 as that still performs graphic design perfectly!
I can still browse those internets using Mojave as the second drive I swap host Mountain Lion.
if only I can swap a drive on my M1:~!

Not really. I only upgrade if I want a different form factor or more compute power or capacity. Currently, I do want to upgrade to the smaller 14-inch size and upgrade the memory. I will wait for the M5 Pro or OLED—both are rumored for this year.
 
Phones: Every 2 years
iPads: Whenever its no longer working for my testing purposes (usually when it loses support)
macs I use for development: 4-5 years
macs I use for servers: If exposed to the internet - when they no longer get security updates. If not - until they die or can no longer run the server we need.
Apple TV: Whenever they lose support
Vision Pro: ?

I am a senior ios engineer and a business owner, our company develops iOS/macOS/iPadOS/visionOS/Apple TV apps.

I am still rocking the 2020 M1 MBP. Before that I was using a late 2015 MBA. The laptop has not failed me yet. I honestly don't even notice the difference in performance between the M1 and M4 unless I am compiling something or running Handbrake.

You only do online browsing and shopping so why do you need the new GPU?

And if you're only doing such surface things why don't you ever come back and reply to the people who took the time to reply to your threads? Why start these discussions and contribute nothing.

No. My first Mac was an MBA 2014 - used it for 7 years. Then comes the MBP 2020 with Intel, traded it in after a year for the M1 MBA.

Again traded the M1 MBA in for an M5 MBP 2 months ago, after 4 years.

Not anymore. After two years of making a series of bad computer purchasing decisions, I bought myself a refurbished M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14" last year, which I intend to keep until it loses support or otherwise breaks. Hopefully that's at least 4-5 years down the line.

I've become less and less of a "power user" recently. If you would have asked me this two or three years ago, I would have said "yes." But I just don't use a computer like I used to. I don't do as much video editing as I used to, nor do I do as much music production as I used to (I am still a deeply committed professional conservatory-trained musician, but my focus lies elsewhere now).

It's a great machine. Plenty powerful and stays effectively silent virtually all of the time. I have a work provided one and it feels great.

My personal MacBook is a 16" M3 Pro MacBook Pro and if I wasn't gaming on it I really wouldn't feel any difference.

For what reason? Do you run out of storage? Do you need something faster every single year?

I love being at the cutting edge but every year is preposterous. As I use my Mac for work and upgrade about every three years. It’s normally a simple equation of saving time + efficiency. The M4 Max was enough of a leap over the M1 Max that I could justify it. And the inward smile when zipping along through big Lightroom shoots without a stutter is worth it. (Just spend a whole lot of money on an all SSD Raid and Thunderbolt 5 enclosure because I don’t want a noisy one and I want things done quickly.) When it’s your work it can justify itself and the discount because of the tax implications etc. The jump from even M2 wouldn’t have been worth it. Not upgraded my phone from 15 Pro Max yet as it has never been ‘slow enough’ to affect me.

Every year? Hell no. I had my 2015 MacBook Pro (I bought refurbished in 2016) until I bought my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. That was an amazing upgrade. Even with the trade-in program, buying a new one every year seems like a waste of money to me.

My work only gives me a new laptop every 3-4 years. And even then, they keep quiet about it as long as it’s still working fine.

Are home, my personal laptop is a 2015 base MBP 13”, which is now getting hard to use
