$5 txt plan and what'sapp (a lot of my friends have it) are enough for me, I have never been huge on txt's, so if you txt a lot then go for a higher plan, you can always see how many you have accumulated on the month in specific w/ the MyWireless app from AT&T to decide and calculate your needs....

I was wondering the same thing. I only have 1 person that I text but 200 is not enough. I was thinking of getting an iPhone and was wondering about the free texting apps myself, but I really don't want to subject her to the hassle. I wish AT&T had a plan between the $5 200 and $15 1500 message plans.

at worse, you can just use textplus or any other app as a backup.

also, if you're both using the same app, texting is unlimited and it's not a hassle. the text will just come through with their regular name.

Ive actually been debating about switching to the iphone for the past week or so, and hearing about saving 15-20 bucks a month by using apps like TextFree makes it seem more appealing. Is using an app like that a pain or inconvenience for anyone?

I use the 200 txt plan and sometimes go over, but not by enough to justify the next step up in the plan. I would need to be consistently over 300 txt ($.10 x 100 = $10) messages before a plan upgrade would save me money.
If I am having a frequent back and forth, I just jump over to web based IM like Beejive.

I use Textfree only. I actually have regular texting blocked
through AT&T.
As far as being a PITA ever since textfree got phone numbers it hasn't been a hassle at all. Everyone I know has a smart phone so when they text me they just pick my textfree number. Really isn't that hard!
I do only use about a 1000 texts a month between 5-6 people so maybe if you were texting a whole bunch of people it would be better to get the regular texting.

BTW all my friends who have iPhones use pingchat. It's better than regular texting and you can see if they read your message!

Google Voice + VoiceGrowl + Prowl + GV Connect

I use GV Connect to text out. When I receive a text, it pops up as a Prowl push notification that opens GV Connect to the SMS tab. Free texting.

I use GV mobile (cydia version) to text out and I receive it via gmail exchange (pushed, of course), which I can also reply via gmail.

my local co-op phone company just had a sale, I guess looking for new customers. My contract was up so I got the I-phone with 2gig data for $12.50a month and unlimited text for $15.00 a month for up to 5 lines. I currently have 3 with the grandaugher who texts like a maniac.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I did up until a month ago, but have since canceled it, because I found that I am still using email way more than texting. Will get a texting plan again if my usage changes.

I'm not a huge texter, I use FreeText and it has worked flawlessly (provided that you buy the Ad-Free version, the ad version is a bit slow). I can text my wife and a couple of friends that have my "texting" number and so far I've been very satisfied.

$5 plan gets me 200 for misc incoming which is good. Otherwise, me, my wife and most of our friends and family use What's App. Works great. Very occasional delay in a notification here and there but not often. More a fluke.

I'm prefer talking on the Phone, especially after dropping BlackBerry for iPhone.

But I do have a $3 plan. Unlimited Incoming & 30 Outgoing.
