Its about 10%. My computer was $2600, ram included. I can get AppleCare for $244 which also covers my ram. 2600/244=10.65%

This is for the MBP 15" or above. Even if I buy this for a high-end 15" MBP with price tag $2199, it's 15.9%. If I choose the base config ($1,799) it's 19.4%.

Got a 17" Macbook Pro i7. I love this machine. Runs solid, the build and screen are beautiful, and an i7 with upgradeable HDD and RAM makes it relatively future-proof in my eyes.

Having said that, AppleCare is $379 up here in Canada and I'm having a tough time justifying the extra investment. On the other hand, my last Macbook Pro (15" C2D) died two and a half years in.

I know the question is basically rhetorical (who the hell knows if and when a machine will break down), but do you guys recommend getting AppleCare? My current warranty expires in July 2011.

I say yes with a small "y".

As for warranties and being a former warranty tech (PC and Apple):

1. Macs are far tougher and have fewer issues than PCs in general and this has been the case as far back as I can remember (more than 10 years).

2. In general, Mac desktops are more problem free than Mac laptops and Mac laptops are about as reliable as a good PC desktop so for a Mac laptop or PC desktop, it's a pretty good idea to get a warranty but not always necessary and you will very likely have no big issues in 2 or 3 years.

3. PC desktops are far less problematic than PC laptops (so it's stupid not to get some extended warranty if you are buying a PC laptop).

Get it.

I thought I was the cool guy and didn't need it. I found out the hard way.

I bought the AppleCare Protection Plan from eBay in 2009 for my iMac 2008 with a huge discount but yesterday when I searched on eBay for the AppleCare for MacBook Pro 15" or above, I couldn't find anything. I only found the one for MBA and MBP13".....:(

And I posted the link for 15" and 17" from bhphotovideo where you can get it for $244. It still official applecare from a reseller.

yea but if you buy a white macbook or a 13" macbook pro for 1000-1200$ and the applecare costs like 400$ it's a little too much... it's more worth keep it without warranty and if it breaks and is cheap, fix it. otherwise sell it on ebay and get a new one ^^

I used to buy apple care from e-bay. I did it 3 times before. I never got screwed I think each computer needed at least one repair after the first year and apple covered it fine. But it turns out that these e-bay sellers were just using number generators to make apple care codes. When they e-mailed you the code you entered it at apple and it worked some people found out months later after they left positive feedback that there apple care was bad. If apple sells apple care for $349 do you think that anyone can sell it legitimately for less than $150 reseller or not. Also apple has now changed their policy if you did not purchase apple care directly from them you need the original receipt and the box that came with it.

Apple care does not cost $400 for the white macbook or the 13" pro those cost less than the 15/17"

true, 250$ for the white macbook. thats 25% of the price though! seems a lot when you already pay more for a mac than other laptops, and other laptops usually come with 3 years warranty (some with whatever-happens warranty too) as a standard.

Its $174...we all know about the Apple Tax which is why you dont buy something like this from Apple but an AUTHORIZED RESELLER. Its valid and covers anything put in the computer by Apple.

If you are really that dead set on saving $70 and risking ebay AppleCare then by all means do it, but if you make a thread on here later on about the AppleCare not being valid, no warranty now, cant get another warranty, ebay sucks, etc...Im going to tear you apart :)

Looks like a great place to buy AppleCare.

Does anyone know if AppleCare purchased in the States (via B&H, etc. as above) would still be valid in Canada? Seems like a no-brainer, but just thought I'd ask...

Thanks, guys.
