NEVER. I wouldn't trust Best Buy to give me info on an item on the shelf without looking it up myself. I don't know of ANYONE who didn't get ripped off or wrong info from their "Geek Squad". I would sell something as is on Ebay and buy a new one before having Best Buy handle a repair. I would, however, buy a new Apple product from BestBuy if they were local and I didn't want to wait.

I was asked to leave the local Worst Try store after correcting a statement by a salesbot. It was a blatant misstatement and I easily demonstrated the error in that statement, and as I was walking away was confronted by 'a manager' that asked what I was doing, and then after my brief explanation, was told that I should leave. That they
didn't like people correcting their salesbots, and embarrassing them in front of customers'. I was about to protest, but realized I was being quickly outnumbered. I left. The customer did too.

On edit: Oh, yes, it was Mac related...

What do you mean by escalate? I did call AppleCare and was going to set up an express exchange. I was told by three people, including a supervisor, that a $499 hold would be placed on my card until I received the replacement phone in the mail and sent the current one in.

Then I started the process online and it was going to be $840 or so, the cost of a new XR plus tax, even though they’d be sending a replacement phone.

I didn’t want that $840 hanging around on my card in case something went wrong. So I canceled that.

Is there something else I can do to make the process easier and not have to drive to a store?

That’s simply how express replacement works. You’re getting a loaner and they’re protecting their ass...ets.

Not sure of your hesitation here.

Wish I could have witnessed that! Did you record a video of this by chance?

It’s nothing personal against Best Buy, but I don’t trust their training standards with the representatives to make repairs. Some of the reps’ are more knowledgeable than others, but they just don’t acquire the core training standards that Apple does, I’d rather take the extra time and allow Apple to make the repair _officially_, versus Best Buy.

Real simple: DON'T BREAK THE LAW, and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Except you can worry about that random retail employees browse through all your data. Which you probably sign off somewhere in the fine print of their service paperwork, but still.

I bet if you ask people if they’re ok with BB employees checking the content of their hard drives, most would say no. I know I would as I value my privacy.

Again, if/when you take any device to be serviced, be it phone/computer/camera you need to assume that someone will be able to view it's content. Therefore, having illegal/illicit/private content on said device would make oneself a moron, if you don't think anyone would see such content, wouldn't it?

Sure, a clever person would expect that their privacy would be in danger. The question for me is not the outcome but the ‘how’ the information is gathered.

Problem is that you let someone in who will go through your things regardless of suspicion and disregard your privacy.

When you bring in your car for service, do you first remove all items of value and lock the glove box- or do you simply have a garage with a touch of professional behaviour?

When the plumber fixes something in your house, do you lock all other doors because they will peak into every room?

Even morons have rights at the end of the day - privacy should always be respected - especially with one’s own customers.

If there's something you don't want to be seen by others, then don't have it available. Why is that hard to understand?

I had a new XR that had a faulty Taptic Engine. I drove 1.5 hours to the nearest Apple store. They couldn’t fix it so they gave me a replacement phone. The replacement phone has the exact same issue.

There’s a Best Buy about 45 minutes from me. Anyone have experience with them regarding repairs or replacements? I hate the idea of having to drive 1.5 hours again.

Thanks.

Just say “ No”.

At best, the BB geeks are hacks. If Apple can’t fix it, why would you think that BB (or anyone else) could?

Just work professionally, respect privacy and let the FBI do their work themselves. Why is that so hard to understand?

With BB in my area their stores can’t even make it above 2 star ratings, even on Yelp. Enough said.

I do (they're certified), but I would never start at an Apple store and then go to Best Buy. But then again I'm fortunate enough to live closer to an Apple Store than I am to a best buy.

If the Apple Store can't fix it, make sure the issue is escalated within Apple.

And that has what to do with the quoted link I was referencing, where child pornography was reported to the authorities?

Because you didn't need to break the law. They made you look like you did. Trial by media, with a lot of dirty things thrown in.

Yeah, if I had, I'd probably still be sitting in jail.

Please expound!

'Office doesn't run on the Mac.' 'You can't share files between a Mac and a PC.' 'Macs are slower than a PC.' 'You might need a different printer if you got a Mac.' 'No, the monitors aren't compatible.' Then he said 'I don't know exactly the answer to that question, but they are harder to learn than a Windows PC.'

I showed the rube 'Microsoft Office', ON THE MAC. I showed them files from a PC that I just happened to have on a flash drive in my pocket. On and on, I scorched the salesbot, but he wouldn't give up. 'But it's harder to use!' *shrug* But I never saw them again when I was there. I'm sure the manager supported the idiot to the end. And so it goes...

I would personally never let anyone other than apple repair my phone again. I had a Square Trade warranty for my X and it sent me to a random store to fix it ... it was never the same. Inferior parts and no longer water proof.

I did a screen and battery replacement on an iPhone 6s at Best Buy. They killed Touch ID and it required multiple trips to sort out. The only advantage is that they got me a new replacement device direct from Apple within a day. One way to look at it is if you want a new (refurbished) phone, there is a higher chance you can get one after a Best Buy repair.

Update here...

I went to the Apple store again today and they gave me another replacement phone without any testing (except for hearing the clicking noise again).

So I went from...
New XR
Replacement
Replacement

The employee who took care of me was the guy who actually worked on my first (new) phone.

After giving me another replacement, upon testing, the second replacement still had the same issue. The only thing he could think of was that it was a carrier issue (Verizon), since it only happens when I slide to answer a call.

He said maybe I could have them change out the SIM card. Does this make sense to anyone that it may be a Verizon issue?

Just curious. Thanks.

I am scratching my head here. If the issue is supposed to be with the SIM card - does it happen without one in the device? That would be easy to test.
Highly unlikely in my opinion though.

Not really sure what people are worried about. They have the same policy as Apple. If they break it they replace it. There's a reason why Apple certified them.

The only time you'll potentially get into trouble if they botch a repair is if the store doesn't have that model on hand, which generally won't happen with Apple.

But the second most favorite past time on here after s%^* talking Android (and Samsung), and maybe even Apple themselves is to s%^* talk Best Buy lol. Suit yourselves.

Even when I’m not breaking the law, why are they looking at my files?
Again, it's not hard to understand. People are flawed, should they be looking at you're content on your device if it's not related to your issue, no. But we live in the real world and these things happen. So to have anything illegal/private on your device when someone else has access to said device and thinking all's well, well that makes you an idiot.

Eh I probably wouldn't trust Best Buy with my Apple gear. Honestly I hardly trust Apple themselves either. The service centers are a joke. Luckily, my mid-2015 MBP has come back from the Houston Hell Center (CSAT) both times unharmed. But I get nervous when I have to leave it with Apple...

It sounds like you can't handle the truth. In days gone by, I've trusted Best Buy and their Geek Squad to look at stuff ... and they always manage to turn it to crap. IMO, and it IS my opinion, the Geek Squad is a group of hacks and wanna-bes.

Not at all. I've actually (many years ago) brought in a tower for a faulty hard drive which came back dented. They offered me a $25 gift card. I was upset, and probably should've asked for more.

Likewise I took in my sons iPhone SE to Apple for a battery replacement during the $29 deal and they cracked the screen and damaged the (logic?) board taking it apart. They got me a new phone but had to mail it to me as they didn't have that model in stock. Interestingly this (cracking the screen) happens when we got a new battery in an iPhone 6s under "recall", but they simply replaced the screen and notated the swap in my receipt.

My point is failure can happen anywhere. I could claim I won't trust Apple to fix my phone because they failed me once (Twice?) before if I wanted to take that stance, I guess.

My point is, Best Buy's policy is that if they damage it they'll replace it, speaking of idevices, because they're certified by and work with Apple. That is their *actual* internal policy. They also have various channels to speak directly with Apple about various issues. Again, that's the actual truth, not my opinion.

You can certainly reserve your opinion. But claiming it's just an opinion and under the same breath stating that "I can't see the truth" doesn't seem to mesh too well. An opinion is an opinion. "The truth" is tangible fact. I very highly doubt Apple would be willing to deal with Best Buy's "hacks and wanna-bes" if they were as universally useless and incompetent as some on this board claim them to be. Not sure why Apple's own trust in a company shouldn't be good enough but it's not good enough for you, and I can respect that. I'm not here to change your mind.
